HOW TO TREAT AND MANAGE BURNS AND SCALDS | DOCTOR EXPLAINS (plus first aid tips)

In this video you are going to learn how to treat a burn or
scald at home and when you should go to the hospital or
seek urgent medical attention.
Burns and scalds are damage to the skin usually caused by heat. Both are
treated in the same way.
A burn is caused by dry heat - by an iron or fire, for example. A scald is caused by something wet, such as hot water or steam.
They can look very similar and can cause red or peeling
skin, blisters, swelling and changes to the skin such as
white or charred skin.
Importantly, the amount of pain you feel isn't always
related to how serious the burn is and sometimes even a
serious burn can be painless.
1. Stop the burning process as soon as possible. This may
mean removing the person from the area, dousing flames with water, or smothering flames with a blanket, but if you are going to do this don't put yourself at risk of getting burnt as well.
2.Next remove any clothing or jewellery near the burnt area of skin, including nappies / diapers. But do not try to remove anything that's stuck to the burnt skin, because this could cause more damage.
3. Cool the area for 20 minutes with cool running water if possible. DON'T USE ICE
4. Keep the person warm.
5. Cover the burn with cling film - aka saran wrap. Lay it over the top of the burn rather than wrapping.
6. Use over the counter pain relief to control pain.
7. Elevate the burnt limb.
GO TO THE HOSPITAL IF YOU HAVE:
- Large burns bigger than the size of the affected persons hand
- deep burns of any size that cause white or charred skin
- burns on the face, neck, hands, feet, any joints, or genitals
- all chemical and electrical burns
- any other injuries that need treating
- any signs of shock - symptoms include cold, clammy skin, sweating, rapid, shallow breathing, and weakness or dizziness
You should also go to hospital if you or the person who has been burned:
- Is under the age of 10
- has a medical condition, such as heart, lung or liver disease, or diabetes
- has a weakened immune system
- have inhaled smoke.

  • I am here to learn how to treat my burn from cooking. Oil spilled onto my 2nd and 3rd finger. My skin has finally blistered up but last night my skin was peeling off. I can tell it is definitely 3rd degree burns. But I am bull headed and refuse to go to A&E and sit for 5-6 hours before being seen. I will probably pay for private care to see a GP and get some silver cream or something.

  • Thank you so much , I recently burnt my thumb by a hot glue gun by accident as the flu gun fell over and slightly burnt my thumb . I did have to wrap my burn but since it is where the bend of the thumb is (joint) I find it quite hard to move my thumb , it has definitely calmed down and does feel a bit numb on the area of the burn which is common. . Hopefully it won’t burst as it is quite a circular blister 😂

  • One thing to point out based on my personal experience with a 2nd degree burn on both of my feet from thinking I don’t need sunscreen on my feet (even tho at that time I was 13 or 14), the main reasons you should go to the hospital is if you can’t treat it at home, I just got lucky that a doctor told my mom about these huge bandages that my mom could put on both of my feet in order for it to heal and so I could wear shoes and could walk properly cuz it hurt so much that I was walking on my heels and I was bedridden for weeks, specifically I think it wasn’t completely healed until 2-3 weeks, my mom said that what she did is she first put medicine on both of my feet ( probably a cream or something) and then put the bandages on both of my feet, also one foot was really bad cuz immediately after it happened and I got in the car with my siblings to go home, my twin brother accidentally stepped on one of my feet (I had no shoes, he was wearing tennis shoes so it caused that blister to pot open) on top of that when I got home I was on the couch and I covered up, then I couldn’t take off the blanket, I either called my mom on my phone or yelled for her since the one that was opened was stuck on the blanket, my mom was able to get it off and told me to not cover my feet up (obviously when I got the 2 huge bandages I could), I was still bedridden even with the bandages but it at least meant I could wear shoes to go places and it made me able to walk properly, luckily I didn’t need to go to Urgent Care since a doctor told my mom how to treat it, idk how or who exactly, I could be wrong about her being a doctor but idk but it worked tho, so I suggest going to Urgent Care before going to the ER, mostly cuz it’s better to get advice from a doctor than from the internet cuz some people lie and could make it worse, I also suggest going if it gets worse instead of better, idk if my mom took me to Urgent Care or not completely but I do know a doctor told her how to treat it

So I couldn't get to a water source. I did have a seltzer water can so I poured that on it until I could get home. I did put a wet cold washcloth on it when I got home. Today it's swollen and angry but I went to the hospital and they said to keep it moisturized and keep it covered loosely. The blister popped this morning and I have heart disease.

  • Good video. What does the “cling wrap do”? I thought you’d apply generous amounts of burn gel then lightly cover with a strip of gauze soaked in gel. Then lightly wrap with gauze. My biggest concern is what action is best to stop the pain? Would it be cool water continuously for 20 minutes OR start with water then hit it with burn gel and cover? IK you’re not able to give direct medical advice here but would appreciate a direction. Like water vs. gel. Just preparing myself in case something happens to my 2 year old grandson.

  • Very interesting about the plastic wrap, I have never heard of that one. Thank you. What are your thoughts on aloe vera? I've never had a burn from acid or the like, but I have had some sunburns and spilled coffee on my hand, and when I used the aloe for a couple, three days, it healed.

    • Thanks and glad you found it helpful. My honest answer is that I don’t know enough about the role of aloe Vera in burns management but from what you’ve said I’ll go away and do some more research on this as it sounds like it could be helpful for my patients to know about this. Cheers.

      @DoctorODonovan@DoctorODonovan Жыл бұрын
    • Products/substances like Aloe vera only have a subsidiary role in terms of "soothing" a small minor burn wound. A Aloe essentially feels good from the fact that it is mostly water ! It just basically feels good because the "burning" sensation and pain of burns persists after the event. There is little to no evidence it plays a role in wound healing as all superficial burns heal spontaneously without any interventions. Thus lots of claims mistake spontaneous healing for attributes assigned to the substance by mistake. Mild analgesics and more cooling all helps at the end of the day in simple burns. In more serious burns forget Aloe Vera altogether and prioritise first aid and an early ambulance call with lots of info for the call-taker. In regard to clingfilm, the best covering for burn injuries is only a debate in respect of more sophisticated dressings that have a role in longer term management and healing. Keep it simple. Clingfilm is quick and easy with all the plusses Dr O'Donovan has noted. Trust me when I say you will have enough to worry about when the hot coffee gets spilled on the baby or the guys at the barbecue need to grow a brain after throwing an accelerant on it. Doh!!!!

It looks like it's the thickness of the top layer of skin, on the top side of a finger. Luckily it's not a huge burn, maybe 1cmx2cm. How does a person treat that at home? I got him to clean it with Dettol/Savlon, then put on Fixxa Burn Gel. At work he'll need to cover it with a blue hygiene plaster, since the skin is gone. Ugh, damn chefs with their cuts and burns, smh.

    • Thank you so much for watching the video and taking time to leave a comment. Unfortunately (and I know this will be frustrating for you), I am unable to give individual medical advice out on this channel. This is because of medico-legal reasons, not knowing your full case, circumstances and it would be unethical of me to do so. I have to advise that you speak to your own health provider (e.g. doctor, nurse) so that they can properly assess your case. Thanks for understanding.

    • The best way to cure 1 st, 2 nd and 3rd degree heat burns is to apply pure Sea Buckthorn oil, it regenerates skin a few layers deep. Apply it as fast as possible; most of wounds will be healed without a scar.

  • i accidentally scalded my fingers. On the first day I've been keeping it in cool water the whole time as it was painful. When ever it was out of the cool water it usually was painful. on the second day it didn't hurt at all and the skin is just a bit darker with blisters. Should this be concerning?

    @Cindy-jy1lv@Cindy-jy1lv Жыл бұрын
    • I know this is a little bit late but the next time you get a burn like that, try to put the hand under cool running water, not warm, not cold, but cool running water. Do that for about 10-20 minutes. Then, put lidocaine cream onto the burn (you may need a prescription depending on where you are), and take some ibuprofen, and if the pain is bad enough, go to the doctors for a prescription to something a tad bit stronger. Once youve done so, wrap it in a bandage and put lidocaine cream onto the burn every morning and night, and use more if needed. Make sure to keep your burn disinfected, using soaps in cool water. Not doing so can result in an infection that could make the situation worse. Of course you should always try to go to a clinic/urgent-care/er if there is: excessive pain or discoloration, numbness, lost of mobility, or intense, painful swelling. Do not use google to try and figure out what to do, they can often make things much much worse, and please do not use ice packs or anything cold with the burn, itll make it so much worse. I’ve had numerous burns throughout my life due to me being boneheaded sometimes, so I get it. This is general advice, every situation is different so if you feel so, see a doctor and use their advice.

    • @@RAZORBACK_BELIEVER why no ice packs.. I'm literally sitting here with my hand in a cup of ice water after 2 ice packs got thawed out because cool water is making my hand feel like it's burning worse..

      @josephine4611@josephine46114 ай бұрын
    • @@josephine4611 if you put your hand in ice, you can get ice burns, and depending on the type and severity of the burn, you can exponentially make the burn worse because of ice burns. Cool to cold water works better because its constantly moving and is not cold enough to create ice burns.

    • @@RAZORBACK_BELIEVER felt unbearable to hold it under anything other than ice packs and iced water.. end up working down to cold water and feels almost back to normal now apart from a small burning feeling in small sections on 2 of my fingers.. my pain threshold isn't high, so might not of been a deep burn.. thank you for the information though, hopefully prevent someone who does get a serious burn from making it worse..

      @josephine4611@josephine46114 ай бұрын
    • @@josephine4611 glad to hear your burn is getting better. However, if you couldn’t put your hand under cool water, more than likely it wasn’t a deep burn, but ice still probably not be applied to anything above the second half of 1st degree burns. Ice packs can be useful for things like if you accident burnt yourself touching something that is hot for a brief amount of time. Hope your burn gets better.

  • As a baker we quite often receive burns to the hands. We have found the best treatment for these minor burns is to cover with vegetable oil and place hand in the oven. It will be quite painful for a minute or two but the pain will then go away and it will not blister or get infected.
