Western Maryland Scenic Railroad's Steam Locomotive No. 1309 (2-6-6-2) travels around Helmstetter's Curve during their Polar Express excursion, with plenty of billowing smoke!

  • For those that are worried about the amount of smoke, steam engines can blow light gray smoke when the correct amount of coal is added. They add a crap tone extra coal sometimes so that people can get cool videos like this. Too much coal = unburned hydrocarbons = excess smoke and pollution but cool photos / videos.

    • when I was teenage boy I used to go train spotting on Doncaster station. The highlight of the day was when the Flying Scotsman came into view down the line thunder ing towards us with black clouds above and white steam from below. It was like some monster Dragon bearing down on us, and in flash it was with us in a blur and then gone.

    • Ha ha ha. How are girls saving the environment when the battieries need special mechinery and thousands of dollars of man hours to recycle. I wont mention that they cant be tossed. I also wont mention that the minerals are sourced from a third world country under dubious practices. I also wont mention that their alternative for charging, after nixing nuclear power plants is....wait for it...COAL fire plants. Thats right! GENERATING the elctricity necessary to charge your precious EV will come from a larger version of THIS.

I mean, the Hummer SUV is greener than the Prius ever was, due to the production costs. The Prius's assembly requires cargo ships, diesel trains, and 18 wheelers. An entire Hummer is built in the US, parts and all. My parents generation doesnt seem to understand the point of "going green" and the cost of cutting fossil fuels out of EVERYTHING. I mean, everything NEEDS fossil fuels to even exist! Ug...my head hurts. T_T

  • Nice picture. An old steam locomotive with travel couches, and a couple of late forties early fifties automobiles for good measure. Both of those vehicles likely saw that train on a fairly regular basis.

    • @dblackkw poor distribution of the fuel, when each slot of the fuel box has a sufficient and equal distribution of the coal, the smoke should be barely noticeable till very close

    • @The_Miata1 probably mismanaged the firebox on purpose to make it look cool for the American public. But usually, even for big trains, the smoke should be completely white and disapate quickly, making it appear very low to the top of the locomotive. When the smoke is like this, you're not vaporising the pollutants in the fire box and spreading them through the air, which makes it a public health hazard.
