The ecstasy of surrender: Judith Orloff, MD at TEDxAmericanRiviera 2012

You can sabotage success by pushing too hard. Surrender is the antidote to stress in a world that relentlessly conspires to interrupt creative thought. Surrender boosts your brain's endorphins--euphoric, opiate-like pain killers--and serotonin, a natural antidepressant that allows you to relax, have more fun, and succeed more wildly than ever before. Life becomes easier and more blissful when you can let go.
About TEDx, x = independently organized event In the spirit of ideas worth spreading, TEDx is a program of local, self-organized events that bring people together to share a TED-like experience. At a TEDx event, TEDTalks video and live speakers combine to spark deep discussion and connection in a small group. These local, self-organized events are branded TEDx, where x = independently organized TED event. The TED Conference provides general guidance for the TEDx program, but individual TEDx events are self-organized. (Subject to certain rules and regulations.)

  • surrender is not weakness or defeat. It is knowing when to let go to something and when to not let go, the art of flow

  • I think surrender is the choice you don't fight with the present moment and start to get along with it. You don't expect more so you can appreciate to a higher degree what you already have. This brings us calmness and hence happiness. Happiness is not about what you own, but what you understand things.

My awe of nature (animals, the ocean, weather...) is something my father passed on to me which not keeps him present in my life but also brings me, peace and pleasure everyday. Thanks for reminding us all to slow down, surrender, and focus on what is really important in life!

I was at a birthday party for one of my 3 year old son's playmates this weekend. And we danced. Him and I. To the chipmunks and I let it all out and it will forever be one of the sweetest memories, how joyful he was that I could be out on the dance floor with him, meeting his 3 year old dancing step for step. thanks for giving me a word to use for that.

  • As a physician used to being in control, it took me many years to truly understand the idea of surrender. It felt like weakness years ago. What am I supposed to do? Surrender to illness? Surrender to death? No! That's why I went to medical school. But I now understand how much peace lies in the art of surrender- and am convinced that surrender improves not just mood, but health. It's time to stop fighting the inevitable, to set goals but release attachment to outcomes. Thank you Judith!

Sometimes it takes someone else's perspective, even if it's so simple, to be a profound epiphany to help us be conscious to change and true happiness, love, forgiveness and acceptance!
