FIRST LOOK: Cadillac Escalade IQ - The 4-Tonne(!) Luxury SUV

2024 ж. 21 Мам.

Just how big and heavy is ‘too big and heavy’ for a family 4x4? Our American cousins usually like to supersize things, but the new all-electric Cadillac Escalade IQ takes things to a new and terrifying level.
Based on a stretched version of the double-decker battery carrying platform from under the Hummer EV, it’s a luxury SUV with 24-inch wheels, two cargo bays, up to eight seats, over fifty inches of screen, and good for a claimed 400 miles of range. And it weighs over four tonnes.
Is this the point where even the American public start to admit that enough is enough when it comes to SUV bloat, or is it merely the four-wheeled epitome of the American Dream?
Top Gear’s Ollie Kew has been for a closer look…

However, I agree the hood is enormous, as all recent American trucks and full size SUV's. They all have this blunt nose style that's actually increased pedestrian injuries and fatalities since 2009 by more than half. Far as I can tell, there is no rule in U.S. about hood height (or hardly any standard) or maybe vehicles over a certain weight are exempt; that is more likely the reason. Pedestrians be dammed I guess. The look of the front of the vehicle is more important in this case.. Take a look at a late 90's SUV's or trucks, and there is a huge difference in height, pedestrians at least had a chance back then..

Studies by independent insurance companies will consistently bump up pickup trucks as the top 20 deadliest as well. And it's not always pedestrian or other vehicle safety, rolling over these vehicles is very easy compared to a Honda Civic, and there have been failures as recently as 2020 for many of their roofs to support the weight of the vehicle as required. And finally, A 2023 IIHS study found that vehicles that are tall and blunt, such as a large pickup or SUV, are 43.6% more likely to cause death in a collision with a pedestrian. But they figured this out in Europe in the 80's, which is why they actually have pedestrian crash standards there, while we don't.

  • I love that Cadillac is returning to form by being unapologetically opulent! It’s easy for myself to poke holes and be a hater, but I realize that I am not this cars target demographic, and that’s fine. Cadillac should be an Everest, not everyone can afford to hike Everest, but we shouldn’t stop those that can! Keep it up brothas from the other side of the pond! Quality has gone up, especially the concept reveals!

    • 🤣....priceless. He has also never witnessed someone being incinerated alive with in seconds making a rescue or extraction impossible after having an accident that ruptured the battery compartment of the EV car they were in....he'd quickly direct his concern of safety to where it needs to be....the dangerous battery systems being utilized currently@@JerelLorenzo

    • @@kramersolinsky5841 but in all fairness, your right American cars have inflated in size since they peaked in the 90s, so many bro dozers in Idaho, but each their own I myself drive a Corolla. I just meant that it’s nice to see Cadillac go upmarket again, with a youthful twist. For so long they’ve been a granny car in my mind. Didn’t mean to ruffle any feathers, hope this sees you well!

  • Ozempic needed for cars too now that the average driver is going to weigh less... I'd prefer a versatile van for 3rd row of seats + cargo space. Also, bring bag "airport shuttles".

    • The van is the the goat. Smaller, more efficient, cheaper, more maneuverable, and yet way more cargo and passenger space than this

  • I believe the concern about size is misplaced or at least incomplete as an indicator of safety. One could ask, “Why build the small Miata when cars are so big?” That would be a misplaced concern also. My opinion is that weight, the ability of the car to control/manage the weight, outward visibility, availability of driver aids, and the capability of the driver to competently and responsibly use the vehicle are critical factors. In fact, it can be argued that all these EVs are way too heavy to be in everyday use.

    • NHTSA study put the Silverado at #1 for vehicles involved in the most deadly crashes in America, followed closely by the Ford f-150. The Ford Explorer, f-250, and Ram1500 also made the list.

    • All automobiles traveling too fast in urban areas are hazardous to pedestrians. Living in an urban area myself, I mostly hear on the news about standard size sedans and small SUVs driven too fast by irresponsible folks crashing into pedestrians and other cars. This is because there are comparatively fewer actual trucks in the city. So my reality is very different from the findings in these studies. Not saying that it’s wrong, but not the norm in the city. As a counterpoint to those studies, my city however has an abundance of large body on frame SUVs and they are almost never in accidents. My city is Washington, D.C. and there are many black Chevy Tahoes, Suburbans, and Escalades transversing the city 24 hours a day. They are driven by highly skilled people, who are not intoxicated. There is no epidemic of crashes and pedestrian fatalities.
