Just HOW lazy are Great Danes? What to expect as an owner | Great Dane Care

2020 ж. 23 Нау.

Great Danes are often called "lazy" dogs, but is this really true? It's well known how much they like to lounge around the house and sleep, but does that make them a lazy breed?
While Great Danes certainly enjoy relaxing, in my experience I've found them very able, willing, and excited to engage in activities and outings. From simple things like following you around the house to outings like going to the dog park, on hikes, and many others, they're excited to join.
Of course, each dog's activity level will vary so your own experience may differ. Make sure to comment below to let us know what you think on this very important Great Dane question ;)

    • And then she closed them again when she realized he was just talking to the camera, not to her haha. Our Dane does the same kind of stuff, though she's still a pup (11 months) so her reactions are more energetic. But she'll quickly figure out if we are talking to her or not, and she will act accordingly!

    • Yes!! I have a 10-month old Dane puppy and she's exactly the same. About 15-30 mins of exercise results in several hours of napping! That said, she has PLENTY of energy for outings, games, meeting new people, etc. If it's interesting, she's all in!

    • That’s really interesting actually, I read that Great Danes require a minimum of 3hrs exercise a day?

      @rachaelburt1737@rachaelburt17372 жыл бұрын
    • @@rachaelburt1737 Don't know where you read that but 3 hours of exercise would be really bad for the bones and ligaments of a growing Dane. Count that source as a source of misinformation!

  • Great Danes were created by God for a specific purpose. It is a well known fact that couches like to fly away for parts unknown. There fore their purpose is to lay on the couch to make sure it does not fly out of the house.

I feel like Danes are a great adaptable dog and will adapt to your lifestyle just to ensure they get the optimal amount of time with you.

  • Our Great Dane was lazy. He got up to eat, drink, poop and to follow people into other rooms. He had about 10 minutes of the crazies after his 8pm meal and that was about it. The rest of the time he was laying up against or ON somebody so I wouldn't of had him any other way. I was always amazed at how much muscle he had for as little as he did. Wish I could be that buff while being that lazy.

    @williamrobb5945@williamrobb5945 Жыл бұрын
  • For all the reasons you said I agree, Danes are not lazy. They are easy going which can I guess be mistaken as lazy. They are thinkers. They think then respond. Great Danes are special and a huge commitment. Before getting your first Dane, research, research, research the breed. But the first question you should ask yourself is - Do I want my dog to be by my side constantly, 24/7? If not, don't get a Great Dane and spare yourself the research. Great Danes are companion dogs and they take that job very seriously. They are loyal, protective, majestic and Scooby Doo all rolled into one. With a Great Dane at your side you will laugh daily and your heart will melt with the love they give. When your Dane looks you in the eye they're looking into your heart. Everything about the Dane is giant, that includes their heart and brain. I found this quote when I was first researching Danes 9 years ago and have found it to be so true. "By the time your Great Dane turns one, they know they are human. By the time they are two, you know they are human." I so enjoy this channel, great info on Danes.

    • I agree with you 100 percent...I worked from home for years and had two Danes at the same time. I had to put a giant couch in my living room, where I worked, because they had to be by me or my brother... They were ready at any instance to go for walks or to parties with us...I've had three more Danes since then... very smart dogs, super loving and funny...I just lost my 5th Dane , a female fawn , she died suddenly a couple months ago at 9 years old...Danes are so similar to each other but yet so distinctively individual to themselves.... Only downside is short lifespan... can't wait to get another Great Dane!

  • The amount of 'laziness' or inactivity of one's Great Dane is often proportional to the amount of activity of the owner. If one spends hours online on laptop or phone, the Great Dane is content to simply lie nearby for the duration. If I'm going outside, my GD wants to join me-sometimes for a short walk, sometimes to get the mail, or sometimes she simply wants to 'help' bring in the groceries from the car. She always desires to be where the action is. Lazy dogs don't care nor wish to be bothered.

They are a lot of work as puppies (but that's true for any breed - puppies require a lot of care), but the goofy personality and love you'll get in return is so, so worth it. Oh, and be prepared to never pee or shower alone again! We aren't kidding when we say they always want to be with you! LOL

  • I call these "chill but will dogs" . . . They chill if you do and they will get up and go if you do. I also call the protective type of watching guarding and protection dogs that are not particularly suspicious and sociable enough and not hyper-reactive, don't bark unless there really is a reason to bark because of their intuition, "Chill but Will" dogs because their demeanor is chill: they're watchin'... they know what's going on, but they will take care of business if something about the situation or the person changes, Or if there is reason to be suspicious the dog will do whatever is necessary to put it self between you and danger and handle that danger so you don't have to you, to protect you, because they take it is their solemn sworn duty to do so.

On the other hand they are all about comfort and enjoy resting and sleeping as much as they did playing. It's up to you as the owner too pick what activity (and trust me sleeping is definatly an activity as far as they are concered) the will engage in. Love them always and they will reward you with some of the best experiances you could possibly have.

  • I've had a black male and a blue male... They both had a decent energy level (even as puppies), but if they played hard, then they needed a good 4-5 hour sleep before they were willing to even go out for a pee. My blue boy loved being around us but loved that we went to work so he could have peace and quiet. If you were home sick for a day, he would look at you with resentment because he couldn't get his 'beauty sleep'. I have a female harlequin now, it was exhausting for us through her puppy stage... She was go go go all the time and destructive if we left the room for a min or 2. Now that she is 2, she still has more energy than what I'm used to, but she has calmed down drastically. 30-45 min at a dog park, playing with other dogs, she will be out for the rest of the day and night. Have to force her to go pee before bed. You know she's tired if she doesn't follow you around the house, hoping to get snacks

My last girl, Sage, even at 32" especially was a devoted assistant trainer and would follow me and every horse I worked with for hours and hours in a day...she was pretty ripped in shaped. I lost her at 10, and she slowed to easy walks at the age of 8. Pretty much every individual is unique, but being bred to hunt large game in tough country and looking at their sheer physicality of build does lend them to a life of action. great channel...:)

  • Part of my job involves supervising doggy play dates and daycare. Theres a specific activity that we do all the time that involves coaxing dogs through agility obstacles slowly- hoola hoops, expandable tunnels, over different toys- and no matter how lazy or shy a great dane- which we see all the time- is, they're SUPER motivated by the affection of people and toys. Even if you're not Their Person, they love people and they know that people love them so they'll do just about anything to get those pets. But, if you're just going to sit with them and stroke their ears they're more than happy to just lay there with their head in your lap, or scheming to find a way to get their entire body on your lap.

  • I grew up with blue, harlequin and fawn great danes. They are wonderful dogs and aren’t lazy at all, but they are more chill. The lounge around and hang with you until it is time to go outside and play. Our blue dane, Baron, loved the water. When we took him to the beach, he would jump through the waves and then race around the sand dunes just to repeat the process.

  • I have a Great Dane/German Shorthaired Pointer mix as my service dog, and the GD in her is SO obvious. She LOVES people, loves making friends (she thought a groundhog was another dog and tried playing with it - we ended up in the vet E.R. for that ha!), and she's content to sleep for hours or work for me for hours. Making sure she gets moving throughout the day helps ME get moving. She has SUCH an amazing brand of humor!! Does Gus like to talk to you guys too? (Addy likes to grunt/groan in various tones for things, and throws her front paw or butt at people who need to be petting her lol!)

  • Having many different breeds from Kelpies and Shittzus to English Mastiffs, id comfortably agree with this. If you're thinking 'all dogs breeds get excited when you go for a walk' then id like to introduce you to the English Basset Hound. Unlike its smaller American cousin, the English basset has about a 15-minute window walking before they give up. Im not just talking 'sit down because I don't want to walk', im talking '65pounds of melting into the pavement whilst everybody laughs'. Great Danes, however, have these bursts of 'Crazy Energy' where they go nuts for 20minutes and can play for an hour or two with other animals before exhausted. I refer to this as 'puppy mode' which seems to be a thing for my Dane even though he's really old now and a cancer survivor. Every now and then he just goes mental and runs head-first into a door. He's old and grey and still loves to play. So if you are a lazy person, Great Danes are a good option as long as you have room for them to run for 20minutes. They love to play fetch with themselves by throwing and catching the toy on their own. They really take minimal effort, lots of love and even more food. The biggest mistake you can make is letting them get away with something. 'you can sleep in my bed just tonight' on the first night i had him has resulted in 9years of sleeping with an elbow in my ribs. Every time a friend wanted to meet him, he struts into their house with no manners, climbs straight on their couch and stretches out. If he can fit, he will sit. So they sleep a lot and eat a lot but im not sure if Lazy is the right word... perhaps 'easily satisfied'.

She’s constantly letting me know that she’s ready for ANOTHER walk by touching her leash. She runs in the apartment to chase her toys.

When I get home from work, he has the biggest party for me, running through the house, bringing me his toys and chew bones, whatever he can find, but he won't do that for my husband. 🙃

  • I've had great danes off and on through the years, and hands down the Great Dane is my favorite. You're talking about are they lazy or not. Even if they are sleeping, they will be there at lightening speed if you need them. Story from high school. It was Halloween, I was a senior in high school. I decided to stay home and pass out candy. My folks were at the party and my brother had a sleepover. Anyhoo, the doorbell rang, there were 4 guys probably freshman year of college. Their intentions were clear, and they wished to do me harm. I told them they needed to leave immediately. I told them they did not want to even consider touching the screen door or I'd call my dog (she was asleep where they could not see her). Her name truly was Tiny, even though she was quite large. They started laughing and reached for the screen door, and I yelled Tiny as loud as I could. I didn't even her name fully out of my mouth, when she hit the screen full-throttle on her hind legs. Those trouble makers took off in 4 different directions - never to be seen from again. Miss Tiny just went back to napping. :-)

She looks very healthy and parents are on premises. Will she grow until that 18 - 2 yr mark? Shes been eating Pedigree food. Not my choice. Slow change to new food or totally switch? What food do you recommend? Thanks in advance!

Two years old and full of energy. We can't go to the bathroom without her following us in. They are truly "Velcro dogs"...totally attached to their people. I've had dogs all my life and I must say Danes are unique.
