  • This is a true Newfoundland story: A 71 year old woman lived alone on a small island off the coast of Maine. She had two Newfis. She went out swimming one day and had a stroke. She started to drown, about 50 yards from the shore. Her two Newfis, Annie and Oliver, were playing in the waves. She was past the breaking waves. She started to go down - drowning. Within seconds, she felt large mouths on her arms. Annie and Oliver pulled her back to shore. She was able to stick her head up and breathe. She was able to crawl back up to her towel on the sand and rest. She then radioed her neighbor who came and got her in his boat, and he took her to the mainland to the ER. Annie and Oliver were fine and waited in the house on the island. She has facial paralysis but lived. Annie and Oliver are still with her today.

  • As a human owned by a Newfie, I thank you for showcasing their temperament and beauty. I have a 4 yr o!d Newf rn. They do require an owner that is willing and able to keep up with grooming. I first fell in love with the breed when an elderly neighbor passed away. Her daughter asked me if I would like to adopt George. He was 13yrs old ( which if you know the breed is amazing) and severely matted. Not because of lack of love and care. She brushed him everyday on her front porch. She was 97 and just didnt realized how his undercoat had matted up very badly over the years. When we got him he had to be shaved unfortunately. We were lucky though, his coat did grow back. It required a lot of c!ose grooming appointments to keep it from matting back up though. His groomer said that is why shaving a double coated dog is not something to do unless necessary. He knew us and already played with our kids. Her daughter was from out of state. We happily took him in, and I credit George with giving my son's now service dog the start in life she needed. He showed her how to be gentle and patient. We got the pleasure of 3 years with this gentle giant. He was the best book club member ever because he loved being a pillow for his humans. He helped me during my boys toddler years and welcomed the new baby boys with open paws. He would sit under a jumper so the boys could jump on him rather than the floor. He was taught 2 of my boys to walk by being a living walker. We knew his time was getting close and I would lay with him and beg him to tell me when he was ready. We didn't want him to ever have pain. One morning he woke up and couldn't stand. I knew he was ready to say goodbye. We weren't, but how could you ever be. Our vet has a home hospice service, where they will come to your home. We wanted him to pass in peace and not afraid at the vet's office. So my husband went and got him pancakes with syrup, bacon, eggs and a blueberry muffin. All the things he used to try and sneak because Mrs. Pearl used to give him a lot of people food. He ate like a king. All the kids said their goodbyes and my husband took them to a playground. George and I played on his bed and I thanked him for coming into out lives. I told him that he had taught Neela the pup. I to!d him that we would be ok and that it was ok for him to go join Mrs. Pearl because she had been waiting. He !used his eyes and peacefully went to sleep and. Crossed the rainbow bridge.

  • Growing up, my neighbours had a Newf. I always thought she didn't have a thought in her head, she was so passive. Then one day one of the four little kids in the family started to wander into the road. That Newfie dog sprang into action, instant high alert, and blocked the child from going any further. Once all the kids were safely back in their yard, the dog settled back into her regular lolling self.

    • Yup! When I was a little girl, my parents had a Bouvier who didn't want me to leave the yard. Apparently it was okay to him if I went down the driveway, but if I tried to go across the lawn, he would muscle me back in. So if I wanted to visit my friend down the road, I had to go down the driveway while he watched my every move. When I came back he would be standing on the lawn waiting for me.

Well the sky in the distance was already dark and within a few mins you could hear the thunder coming. Next thing I know the big baby’s standing at the bottom of the hill going up to my trailer looking at us with sad puppy eyes. He politely sat there until we invited him up at which point he lumbered up to the deck and sat with us until she came out lol. Poor guy was scared of the thunder and didn’t want to be alone

  • Growing up in the country like us all our neighbours had dogs and one of them had a Newfie… you couldn’t find a more laid back or relaxed dog unless there was a bear nearby henceforth her name(Bear) as she showed absolutely no fear charging black and grizzly bears and she never once got injured. After chasing a bear she would go from aggressive, powerful and menacing to sweet and friendly and laid back once the danger was over. Biggest issue as already stated her fur had never been brushed but was never badly matted which was surprising and secondly the buckets of slobber she would release hourly. You always knew where she had laid due to the big glob of slobber on the ground.

    • You know, in a way every Labrador is a Newfoundland Labrador mix. While The Newfoundland already existed on the island when Europeans came here some 530 years ago. Nobody knows how they got here but there is speculation the Vikings brought them in 1000ad when they tried to settle here. It's also possible The Irish were responsible. it's possible they arrived here even earlier. In any event, the Newfoundland was recognized as a great asset to small boat fishermen from hundreds of years ago. Problem was, at often over 150lbs getting a wet one back over the side of a tiny boat was a challenge. Due to this, locals decided to try to create a condensed version of The Newfoundland. Using select Newfoundland's they bred (a now extinct), dog called The St. John's Water Dog. The result was a smaller and lighter animal with the same exceptional water abilities of the Newfoundland. This new Dog was known as The Lessor Newfoundland for many, many years. In the 1800's, a British naval officer stationed in Newfoundland thought the new dog would be very popular back home with sportsmen. He rechristened The Lessor Newfoundland The Labrador Retreiver because he thought that the name Labrador would sound exotic to people in The UK. The Newfoundland is also responsible for the existence of several other very popular breeds. Their story is fascinating.

There are so many stories of families with swimming pools whose Newfs instinctively leap in to rescue children whenever they jump into the pool. They are incredibly sweet and gentle and loyal to their families. They are not good guard dogs because they are just too friendly. • She's a youtuber first, it provides much more money than just being a dog groomer. Grooming for free allows her to hand pick animals that would make for interesting videos, and she doesn't have to waste her time going through a dozen golden retrievers that would make for less interesting content. Don't get me wrong, I love Vanessa, but she's running with a very smart business model.

Keeping the house clean is also an issue The won’t do well in warm climates. Lived in NYS when we had our girl. She wanted the cool cellar in the summer and would lay out in snow and ice during the winter.

  • When my stepdaughters were 5 and 2, we were just wasting time in a pet store, and a man came in with the biggest dog I've ever seen in my life.. a 2 1/2 year old male Newfi. He proceeded to lay down in the middle of the store, and my stepdaughters just looked at the dog with the biggest smiles on their faces.. They looked up at the man, and at the dog, and he just said.. "ya you can play with him.. he loves kids". My girls were all over that dog and all 3 of them (the girls and the dog) were in heaven for about 10 minutes. The owner and I just watched and laughed... it was a great show. After we left and we driving home, the girls couldn't stop talking about him. Newfis are amazing.. probably the best family dog ever... as long as they don't roll over you.

    • Its the source for the term "nanny dog" .. they will protect kids. If uve never seen an agressive newfie, wait until u see them with kids when something bad happens. Then it doesnt look like a newfiew.. but a ferocious bear with huge teeth putting itself between kids and danger. I experienced this with my dog .. he has no training whatsoverever related to this.

  • "Sweetness of temperament is the hallmark of the Newfoundland; this is the most important single characteristic of the breed." from the AKC Breed Standard. Newfies are just great dogs. One of the few downsides to having a Newfoundland dog as a family member is the amount of grooming that is needed, but they make up for that in so many other ways.

It belonged to the family of one my friends from school and he was just the most amazing creature. Sweet and huggable of course, but we also used to wrestle him, and he'd even let us win. They're obviously known as gentle giants, and they're also affectionate, loyal, intelligent, and brave. Literally everything you could ever ask for in a dog. Gone but not forgotten, Samson

    • Our Newfie Honor (RIP), loved to play "the most frightening game in the world." She'd only do it with me, because I am a big guy. She never tried with my wife, who is tiny, or with anyone else. But if you go into the backyard with her at night, with the light off, she'd run past you like you were a Matador, only veering away at the last moment. And she'd make these horrific Hound of the Baskervilles noises that were terrifying. And because she was black, and it was pitch black outside, you couldn't even see her. You could just hear her, feel the ground shake, and then feel the substantial gust of wind from her passing by you. Terrifying. And when you're done with the game, you just put your palm out, and she stops and licks it. It was exhilarating though. Only the fact I knew she wouldn't hurt me kept me from being frozen in fear.

One of them, Geoffrey, could easily be mistaken as a black bear, and his fur isn't floofy but long and sleek and even naturally parts on the top of his head, so on windy days like today he'll hold his nose up to the wind and let his hair just blow in the wind lol😂.
