What if Hammond used an electric boat?
There would’ve been electrictrocutions.
Then he would crash
He whould have crashed it
@woody Vallallellalunga I agree. Used to love the guy bet he really is an asshole.
He would crash it in an upstream race after the finish line
When Jeremy goes into story telling mode... just soooooo good!
Except most of it is bollocks. Especially in this episode. It's vile and at best "limited".
He is quite the historian at points
@@matt_cummins28 Every party needs a pooper thats why they invited you~ Party Pooper~ Party Pooper~

@@matt_cummins28 shut up
The fact that Richard said " i didn't sign in for boats" and then go on to mend his essentially a very sophisticated boat multiple times all by himself is very very astonishing.
Well, he does have a history of repairing critical malfunctions in vehicles. Both Botswana and Source of the Nile specials, Race to Mexican border and some more
He's the most practical of the three
It's amazing how resourceful a person can become to keep from sinking!
Just him and the Amazon back up crew of mechanics. Not knocking his engineering skills but this is entertainment not a serious documentary.
He can do cars, and believe it or not - boats are actually much simpler mechanically.
This is pure entertainment. Education, joy, easy to watch. Keeping that old school quality entertainment alive.

I love how this show always teaches us more about the world around us. I have learned so much about history, culture, and Clarkson's unyielding genius.
In all seriousness, I learned more about Vietnam and the war from what little Clarkson talked about it during this special than I did during my entire time in school. Mostly a failure of the US education system, but also shows that despite the show mostly being about three friends going on trips in expensive vehicles, it does have more to it at times.
Too bad Clarkson, is a racist to the core. Set you standards high.
@@zachtavaris5378 everyone's a little racist let's be honest.
@@palmeristo no lol
@@zachtavaris5378 then why are you even watching these videos
they went to Vietnam twice and both times without cars. and yet those two specials are amongst the best specials they ever made. for me TG Vietnam is Top3 special, and this one i enjoyed very much as well. i dont even know why.
I’ve watched this special like 10 times. It’s not the cars that make this show great, it’s these three and learning about different cultures.
yup ! in my mind its the best of the best!
The scenery of Vietnam during their two visits awesome. Especially the moped/motorcycle special with their authentically custom made suits.
"You could plant Richard Hammond and in the morning, he'd be 3 feet taller" Gets me everytime. Lol
If you where to plant Richard underground he would die my guy.
If I have a boat, I'd gladly name her Jizzle Drizzle

I'm a vietnamese and yes we are quite proud. Perhaps our ingenuity came from the desire and yearning for peace and independence during these terrible wars. We were basically pulling the "desperate times call for desperate measures" and some definitely worked as you can see in this video haha Also, We are also quite happy NOT to be participated in any wars anymore. Vietnam has been torn by wars for over a thousand years starting with the Chinese, then French, then Japanese, then the US, then the Chinese again . Yikes, We're done. We just wanna live in peace and be friends with everyone else in the world and we also hope for a peaceful earth and everyone to stop fighting each others. Who knows when a comet gonna come smashing into this planet and we'll all be nothing but just space memories :) so let's live in peace and harmony, eat good food, drink good spirits, and help and love each other!
I'm ex Royal Navy and have been to many places in this world, but Vietnam is the most beautiful, friendly and safest of all I've visited. I can't wait to return. Much love from Scotland xx
How’s the Chinese claiming your sea?
Pretty much just like every other nation tbh Everyone's sick of wars and politics
Amen to that brother.Vietnam people I have met here in New Zealand are the nicest.
"Over 100 years with the French" yikes, is that the official Party propaganda? We invested Vietnam after the Chinese invaded by the request of the then Vietnamese rulers. It wasn't uncommon at the time. Korea asked for Russian protectorate against Japan. Britain pretty much treated China as a colony. We also developed your country a lot and despite all the BS about "stealing your resources", a huge amount of the modernisation of Vietnam happened under the French. Roads, factories, lots of your more famous buildings came from the colonial era, as far as I know you're not about to knock those down because they're "colonial". You eventually fought us off and took your independence properly (then the Chinese tried to take over and the Americans and you had them get out too), and I respect that, the Vietnamese are a strong people. But please stop with the whole "100 years of war" thing, it's ridiculous. You may not have wanted us as rulers but you certainly profited a lot from it, and you still profit from it. Alphabet, buildings, roads, infrastructures in general, and so on. I'm tired of colonies that ended up under socialist or communist regimes after independence and ended up being told by their governments that everything wrong with their country came from the colonizer.
There were some schoolchildren swimming. Some of them were ginger...

Nice reference from that BMW crash.
Some were disabled.

That camera work at 3:30 is spot on. Amazing scenery with the boat effortlessly cutting through the water. Beautiful
Seamless transition
"the camera crew tried to pull me off"- Jeremy Clarkson
Was searching for a comment to see if I was the only one reacting to this haha
It’s ironic the refueling boat basically works exactly the same as Richard and May’s highway refueling car.
*Without the explosions
This was one of my favourite from Grand Tour, and Top Gear. Absolutely brilliant.
So you're saying you love seamen?
@@Tumbleflop lmao
“It’s because we hadn’t counted on the ingenuity of the locals, who decided to pull the boat from the front.” Or maybe it’s that the locals actually understand the laws of physics
I thought the same, but the Vietnamese are still some of the most practical people on the planet to be able to do what they’ve done
What do you think "ingenuity" means?
Probably they deal with this on a weekly basis so for them it's common sense.
Its an example of street smarts vs book smarts. Some people really don't have common sense..
I know nothing about boats, could someone explain why it only worked when pulled by the front?
No Cars and still better than the Madagascar Episode imo. Hopefully the Scotland one would be well made like this.
I liked the Madagascar episode. Just wished they did the same thing with races, First to point B from point A over a 1000 miles and such. Instead of the treasure hunt
@@ken.95 I liked it as well. But comparing this right here and their usual "Specials", that was not upto the mark and felt way too scripted. I mean, right from the start we knew they ain't gonna find any treasure or whatever and then was there any twist at the end ? No. Either way, like i said, liked it. But not as much as others including this one.
I'm looking forward for the Russia episode.
@@saamz5992 I gotta say, I quite liked it if only for the fact that James and his car went through mountains of shit and got out the other side. We've seen James struggle before but this was just insane! The way Hammond butchered his poor car was unfortunate though. Jeremy's car was great. If you forget the treasure hunt, what remained was three old blokes riding in shitty conditions and lovingly hating on each other, which is what I'm watching for! I do get your point, though. Many specials had more to offer but the trio really is getting old..
@@inflatablewolfie I agree with your perspective as well. Them together sitting and chatting about cars alone would do for us. And nah.. they still can do it 😆 despite their age all you need to give 'em is a lil bit of a 🥃😂 and hopefully Scotland Special would be a much better one. 🤞🏼
The Viets are Geniuses, I was in a Boat in the same area in 1993, one of the main bearings seized, the crew proceeded to strip the old Soviet engine & found the problem bearing in the crank, they then made a new one using a Coconut, 2 hours later we were underway & it was like brand new. Due to the US imposed embargo on Vietnam, there was a severe shortage of spare parts, amazing people.
The fact that they still use Red alert 3 soundtrack in their clips XD
"from this environmentally friendly boat" cracks me up everytime
The PBR should’ve been fitted with several loudspeakers and Fortunate Son played repeatedly as loud as humanly possible
His is a reconstruction of one, actual battle ready pbrs of the era did indeed have fortunate son outfitted and ready to go
It might stir the old AKs and RPGs by the riverways.
fortunate son isnt a pro war song
@@paramjeetsolanki It was such a great anti-war song that it dropped off the end of the register and looped around as a whole war anthem.
I wonder how many PBRs are just below the surface of the water Jezza was speeding over.
The Mongolia special and this one were some of the best things they’ve ever done. Utterly wonderful and watchable
"My expensive Bell Ross is all fogged up! That's going back!" :D Typical James May :)
I feel like Clarkson would be amazing to have as an uncle or something.
The camaraderie and chemistry between the three characters is fantastic.

Oh my goodness me Jeremy, how dramatic. You are the man. Love from South Africa 🇿🇦
Seriously love these specials!
Good thing he saved those “schoolchildren”
What's crazy is that they were most likely teenagers. You had to sign your draft card when you turned 18 back then
And still today. It’s a federal crime if you don’t, unless you have a disability
I've always found it interesting that the drafts of Vietnam were so controversial when 2/3 of the American troops in Vietnam volunteered, whereas 2/3 of the American troops in WW2 were drafted into much worse conditions and nobody cares. It's remarkable how drastically the perception of war changed after Vietnam when the general public got to see it in a way they previously never had.
@@eazyv2069 honestly it's probably because we lost Vietnam but one world war II.
@@blist8329 I suspect it has more to do with the much more political nature of Vietnam. It was a game for the media to represent Vietnam with certain spins because they had so much more footage readily available and it was an exceptionally political war. It seems like most people today have forgotten the wider context of Vietnam, that is to say the US' mission statement of assisting bastions against the global spread of Communism. If preventing the establishment of a European superstate hadn't been such an obvious goal to pursue with WW2 and they had the film tech of Vietnam to record it, the US very well might have backed out of WW2 from public backlash too when they started showing footage of some of the staggeringly brutal conditions American soldiers died in like Italy.
Please come back soon Grand Tour we love you ✌️💜 ty Amazon 🤪

What a piece of kit that PBR is, wicked thing
Mays face said it all when he first saw it. And his response was that of a man who has seen this so many times before from Clarkson that his voice is the same as what my teachers used to say to me when i haven't bothered with homework. The sense of frustration and yet not surprised with a alight wiff of sarcasm.
I looked up that James E Williams guy, his story is epic, he was in the Korean war before Vietnam, & trained US Marshals after, this guy did not do retirement at all.
"Vietnam number 1" is their main dailogue in PUBGM.
lol

I love the sound of james's boat 🤤
It reminds me of the Orca as it's dying and Quint refuses to ease up on it, giving it more throttle till it finally dies.
