28-YEAR-OLD Justice lives with narcolepsy type 1, a rare neurological condition that causes her to fall asleep "without warning" several times per day. The condition means Justice is unable to regulate her sleep-wake cycles, so she experiences fragmented sleep during the night and "sleep episodes" can happen at any time during her waking day. Whilst Justice does her best to schedule naps in an attempt to prevent episodes, she regularly falls asleep in public - something that she admits comes with "some level of embarrassment." She has been mistaken for being "passed out drunk" after falling asleep in nightclubs and even experienced an episode during her grandmother's funeral. Justice is not oblivious to how that might look to people who don't know she has narcolepsy - something that does make her feel "extremely vulnerable." Fortunately, Justice is surrounded by supportive friends and family, including her sister Ava. Having grown up with Justice, Ava is used to protecting her sister when she does have an episode in public: "I just make sure to keep her safe, making sure people respect her and that her episode is not a spectacle." With this support to fall back on Justice is adamant that whilst her condition can be frustrating "life is all about perspective" - and now, by advocating online, she is determined to show other young people living with narcolepsy that "you aren't chained in by your disorder. You still can live a functional life, you still can achieve the things that you want to achieve."

  • When I was a child I had a sleeping disorder, I was around 10 years old. It went on and off for over a year. And then it stopped. I'm now 64, and I have insomnia now and then. I fell asleep at a baseball game and woke up and everyone was gone. We loved right across the street from baseball fields so it wasn't unusual for me to go watch the games. My parents took me to many specialists, ran many tests and they came back fine. Then one day it just stopped. I'm glad they were able to diagnose your sleep disorder.

  • My dad has Narcolepsy, I remember as a kid he would always fall asleep out of nowhere. I remember one day I asked him when he was going to get a car and said to me " I'll Never be able to drive, I have Narcolepsy". After that moment I just let him sleep until he would get up because it is not a big deal its something normal to me. I always try to understand because it was also passed down to my little brother and from my perspective and theirs it's normal but others may laugh. Others should be more open to learning about these things because it's not normalized that we talk about these things.

  • My uncle probably had this and we just didn't know it back then. I don't have a sleeping disorder but I fell asleep one time while driving and would have crashed into the wall had someone not blown their horn. I didn't even realize I went to sleep. After that I don't play when it comes to sleep and driving and keep a car music playlist to help me sing to stay awake. If I'm going out and will be far from home, I won't eat because I know my body will get sleepy after an hour of eating. Once I yawn it's almost time to go. I will not jeopardize my life as well as others driving while sleepy. I've taken a 20 minute nap when i got off work because I was so sleepy and feared falling asleep at the wheel again.

    @winternightsky6945@winternightsky69452 ай бұрын
    • Have you ever thought about possibly having sleep apnea? Falling asleep while driving is one of the symptoms of it

      @lkjhb1@lkjhb12 ай бұрын
    • @@lkjhb1 No it's not sleep apnea, I was just tired. I was young when it happened and it was my first time driving far to check colleges. I didn't believe people could fall asleep at the wheel until it happened to me. I can sit down at my job all day and be perfectly fine, but I can't sit down for long driving. You're tired and fighting sleep and thinking I got this or that I'll close my eyes for 2 seconds, the car in front of me is way up there so I'm not going to hit them. You don't want to pull over to take a quick nap for fear of being robbed/or kidnapped, so you keep going. Next minute you know you're sleeping. When you get off work and think I'm good to drive but the sound of the road/vibration of the car makes you sleepy. I equate that to a fan in the bedroom. A lot of us go to sleep with a fan and in a way the sound puts us to sleep. So when I'm working or studying I don't turn on the fan. When we eat we want to lay down and got to sleep after an hour. So through trial/error I learned how my body works. I have about a 2-3 hour driving limit before I get sleepy, if I drive far to leave early in the morning right when I wake, but don't eat anything. I can snack but not that much. And if I know it may be late driving back home to either stay the night at their home/or get a hotel. Just know I hate staying at either place and prefer to sleep in my own bed. Not everyone's house is clean and roach free and I have a fear of camera/dirty carpet at hotels. Before being a mom I wasn't always perfect when it came to following my rules when driving, a few times I drove and had to fight falling asleep. But once I had my kid I started following them 100%. I couldn't imagine being careless behind the wheel and something happens to my kid or me/they have grow up without me or I take another person's life. I got hit a fear years ago 5 minutes after dropping off my kid at school. A diesel on the side and the car behind me, both hit me at the same time. The diesel caused the accident, because they turned in my lane/their trailer went over my car, I thought I was about to be decapitated. So I have anxiety driving because I swear every time I drove after that some careless person almost hit me by not paying attention. I've since moved from the city to more country area and my anxiety driving has tremendously improved. There's less cars on the road, people in a hurry and wider streets.

  • I can relate to this. I had a sleeping disorder throughout my young adult life, but for me I thought I was doing it to escape my everyday circumstances. No one ever knew or inquired why I slept so much. I just thought it was because of deep depression.

  • The only thing I will have to disagree on is the driving. Because you have narcolepsy, you are putting yourself and others at a higher risk of danger. As long as someone is in the car with you while you are driving to take over if you do have an episode. Then by all means. But over all, I'm so glad to see so much positivity from you over this, never let it get you down. And thanks for the funny moment while at the funeral. Nice share!

    • It really can be. I'm lucky enough my episodes typically are in controlled environments usually meaning I can feel them coming on. Then if I plan my day with structure naps etc. I have prevent episodes from occurring. But for somebody with a more severe case I can only imagine the difficulty managing the unexpected side of the disorder.

I WAS GOING TO GO TO THE DOCTOR BUT I PRAYED AND IT HEALED. AND COME TO FIND OUT, I WAS CONSUMING LARGE AMOUNT OF ARTIFICIAL SWEETENERS WHICH CAUSED THE PROBLEM OF SLEEPING A LOT😮😮

  • In our society, there isn't a lot of accommodation for narcolepsy in things like education and employment. Justice found a way to make it work, but I'm sure it hasn't been easy, especially pre-diagnosis. I love that she has friends and family members who not only "accept" her condition and its symptoms but also normalize it. The whole rest of the world expects her to be awake consistently. In the presence of her close friends and family, she's got a safer space.

  • I guess narcolepsy is more of a bother than anything else. You have to plan out and try to keep things under control at all times. You have to make sure that you are safe constantly or else you could end up hurt by accident while sleeping

  • I was diagnosed in 2021, and let me tell you it can be a nightmare! Can’t stay awake during the day, and can’t stay asleep during the night. So you take meds to keep you up and take them to sleep. It can be quite depressing at times.
