  • Hello John, It is lovely listening to your stories about the old days, It is my Dad Wallace Lees birthday today , God rest his soul, He was born on this day in 1888 in North Wales, His Dad was William Lee, and his Mam was Ada Lock Boswell. My Dad was a great fist fighter, His two fingers on each of his hands were broken from fighting, the little finger and the one next to it , but he could still do Anything with his hands, including building wagons from the ground up. You mentioned Hughie Burton, My Dad bet old Othi Burton in a fight , I remember him coming to visit us when i was a little girl in Dublin where my Mam and Dad settled, I can see him now, getting out of a taxi with his lovely crombi coat and silk scarf . They became great Friends, I remember him giving my Dad a big hug when he seen him. My Dad was well known by So Many , He walked 25 Miles John to fight the so called Best Fighter in North Wales , A Man called Hogan and he bet him, Gave him a good tanning for himself. I am 77 yrs old now and All my Brothers 9 are all dead and gone, and my Sisters 5 have passed away R.I.P. There is just me and my Sister Angela left now, She is 73 yrs old. When i was a little girl about 4 yrs old i used to listen on the radio with my Dad to the fights in Madison Square Gardens , His favorite heavy weight boxer was Jack Jonson, He said he was Not knocked out , the famous photograph of him shielding his eyes from the sun proved that. My Brother Tony got a mention in the book King of the Gypsies, not a very nice mention , He said when he worked in Wales with Tony that my Brother instigated some fights, he never said he Lost One ! Tony was an excellent boxer, All my Brothers could have a good fight, they were well thought by my Dad. R.I.P. Really nice listening to you John, I Wish yo and your Family Dosta Kushti Bokt . God Bless you All and keep you safe. Always . Bokt Ta Kom from Dublin. XXXXX

  • The title of Gormans book "King Of The Gypsies" is based on a historical title that had nothing to do with fighting. King of the gypsies was a community leader, a liason with the outside community, there's a long documented history of people being KOTG... But there's no mention in history of a "gypsy king", not until Tyson made it up as part of his media focused business plan. Peter explained about how they had fights in the field as kids, had amateur fights, got in the gym with gloves on, and turned pro... But what about all these bare knuckle fights that John "the gypsy king" Fury had? It seem strange that only John remembers having all these bare knuckle fights, only John remembers beating the Irish champion for 100k, only John seems to think John ever ruled the bare knuckle world. Only John remembers retiring as a pro undefeated, only John remembers being #3 in Britain, #7 in Europe and #30 in the world.

      @amymcphee4668@amymcphee46682 жыл бұрын
    • The title, "King of the Gypsies", when used by Irish travellers, is specifically in reference to bare knuckle boxing. It's entirely separate to the historical use of the term by Romani gypsies. In Ireland, the term "King of the Travellers" is generally used, with gypsy being used interchangeably with traveller when used by Irish travellers based in the UK. As for John's bare knuckle record, no doubt it is embellished. But Bartley Gorman does mention John as a great fighter in the book, so there is some record of him actually being a bare knuckle fighter, although he unlikely ever held the title of King of the Travellers.
