Sapphire any day. The 170 is pretty cool, but it's a one-trick pony. Gotta wait to cool down between each run; produces different power depending on fuel, altitude, humidity, temperature, etc.

Consistency wins. It is amazing how little effort the Lucid takes to run 9.0. So many of the Demon 170s are breaking or just not performing like they should. The Lucid just dead hooks and goes.

I’m going to comment before watching with my prediction. I’ll predict the Dodge Demon 170 gets slaughtered in every race it runs. These cars must have the stars align, race gas, most perfect of surface prep, perfectly warm tires, etc etc etc to get close to a Plaid or the Sapphire. I may eat my words but I suspect the Sapphire will perform consistently like last vid and the Demon will be fast but no where close. I hope it at least runs in the 9s otherwise it should drive away in shame.

I like both these cars but the reality here is after the Demon failed to impress 'again' it probably got loaded on a trailer for the drive home. The Lucid owner could have taken some of the crew home then called past Costco to pick up a few things. As fast hassle free daily drivers these EV's really are the kings, but I wouldn't want to see them totally take over the drag strips. Good video, the outcome was as expected though.
the fact that it was still pulling away at the end is the most impressive part. And all in luxury too

Thanks Brooks that was a really fun contest! Apart from the launch, it's very clear that the Sapphire is just a faster car. Most impressive to me is how nice a car it is and so simple to drive. I know Dodge worked hard on the Demon but it just can't overcome the weaknesses of ICE technology in this application.

I would take the Demon 170 any day in the week. Not having a engine sound takes away more than half of the sensation for me. I also like that the Demon needs a good driver to get a good result, where my grandma can sit in the EV and do almost the same time after time.

That orange 170 had engine issues right out of the factory. It was trapping 8mph slower than normal 170’s. It’s currently in the shop for lots metal shavings in the oil.

This Demon 170 had 1 seat, lighter wheels and taller 315 55 17 tires. I'm surprised it ran that slow, it never stood a chance but it should have ran faster.

I agree. As far as EV cars goes, give me the RIMAC, LUCID Sapphire or the AUDI E-tron RS (the fastest model). To me, those three are the only EV's I would consider; all other EV's out there are just ugly and a hard pass from me - regardless how quick they are. Although... the new Hyundai IONIQ 5 R is growing on me😊

If you look at the side view of the Demon when it launches, it looks like the rear tires are gonna touch the front of the wheel well from the traction. I don't know if it's called axle wrap or what you would classify that as. I guess the rear axles are twisting so hard that they're distorting? Someone with more knowledge would have to answer that but you can tell the wheel isn't centered under hard acceleration.

From what I'm seeing at the track and on U-Tube. The Demon 170 doesn't appear to be the same Challenger performance car Dodge introduced since most are running in the mid to low 9s instead of Dodge's advertised 8.91 quarter mile time. Now I'm reading they're having power train issues.
8.91 is what the engineers say is the best possible in the Demon. That means it has to be spec’d correctly. Carbon fiber wheels, single seat, no leather. Most will be low 9 second cars.

When the Demon won't even hook up at Bradenton, you know Dodge put too much HP into that shitty, outdated, platform. It's one of the best tracks in the country and still couldn't pull a good 60 foot time.
Takes alot of skill to launch a car, not everybody has that.

@@gregmatson1470 My last car was a redeye Hellcat and with 200 less hp, it's still not easy especially with the stock tires. Regardless of what settings you use, 1st gear is so low that as the tires spin, the rev limiter kills the run before you even have time to short-shift it into 2nd gear. Any of the Hellcats/Demons are useless below 60mph without a proper set of drag radials and some suspension mods (like stronger rear lower control arms) to limit wheel hop. It's all a matter of what you like - the Sapphire is beautiful, consistently lightning-quick and consistent but it's a quarter of a million bucks and it has no soul, just a muted whirr. The 170 is simply America's ultimate (and one of the last remaining) old-school musclecar with all the soul in the world. It's just not as quick. But still, mid 9s and mid 140s in the 1/4 mile ain't exactly doggy.

Both are insanely fast no matter which way you slice it, but for some bigger picture perspective, I would suggest you go to the Doug De Muro channel to see the latest commentary about his Countach. It's the 375hp model, not even the more powerful 5.2 litre downdraught QV with 455 hp. He said SPEED is so accessible now, it's no longer reserved for a handful of cars like it was in the 70's or 80's, now, the big differentiator, is driver experience. The experience of the Countach is unparalleled and no EV no matter how fast in a quarter will excite the senses in the way that Lambo does.

If it's an NHRA track, yes. No roll cage, competition license or parachute required for 9 second, 150+mph EVs. But they might not like an 8 second Lucid Sapphire pass and the one in this video has already run 8.93. Better learn the art of sandbagging. Your Plaid won't be a problem.

@@cll1639no sandbagging needed on normal test and tune nights. And all the normal drivers of the sapphire have NHRA licenses. So far no issues besides being asked to wear full fire suits.
Yes, you can run your plaid here. I would bring a helmet, fire jacket and pants which you can pickup for $400-$500. We regularly run this sapphire at test and tune nights here.
