In this video we discuss some of the famous Biblical motifs, imagery, and turns of phrase which find their way into the Qur'an. This includes the camel going through the eye of a needle, the trope of uncircumcised hearts, and the parable of the mustard seed. All of these though Biblical in origin have their own lives in the Qur'an and Islamic tradition. This is a clip from a video in which I present 10 Biblical turns of phrase in the Qur'an.

Thank you for making these videos, they have helped me find a deeper appreciation for both the Bible and the Quran. On the topic of Biblical and Patristic turns of phrase, this will be controversial but I think the Quranic reference to God's right hands is drawing on Irenaeus in Against Heresies book 5 chapter 6, where he says "Now God shall be glorified in His handiwork, fitting it so as to be conformable to, and modelled after, His own Son. For by the hands of the Father, that is, by the Son and the Holy Spirit, man, and not [merely] a part of man, was made in the likeness of God." Now I know this looks like trinitarianism at first but if you read Irenaeus without trinitarian glasses he is pretty clearly a subordinationist, even in these passage we see that the son and Spirit are not equals to God but merely his agents.
Since the Quran is not concerned with the bodily circumcision but is concerned with dietary restrictions- it would be interesting to see which groups of Christians in the 7th century Arabia related to circumcision and dietary restrictions. If we found a group that is not concerned with circumcision but is concerned with diet - THAT group would be influential to the reciters of the Quran. Locating the main centers of worship for those Christians would show us where Islam began and the locations of “Mecca” and “Medina.”

The term “God’s signs” or “God’s verses” can be associated with the “good news” or Gospel itself - so the meaning “there is no heaven to those who deny God’s signs” can have a parallel meaning “there is no heaven to those who deny the Gospel of Christ” and - by extension “the recitation of rasul Allah”.
Really fascinating to see how the quran was invented and developed using available sources at the time.
Your comment gave me extra motivation to dive deep in the Qur'anic ocean of wisdom where endless and timeless meanings can be derived from. Say: "Does any of those beings to whom you ascribe a share in God's divinity guide unto the truth?" Say: "It is God [alone] who guides unto the truth. Which, then, is more worthy to be followed - He who guides unto the truth, or he who cannot find the right way unless he is guided? What, then, is amiss with you and your judgment?" There was no need for inter textual translation since Aramaic was still the Lingua Franca of the entire region where the “Quran” first appeared, that is well North of the Hejaz area. The other giveaway is all ancient manuscripts of the Quran were written in Syriac. The question that needs an answer: what is the role of the prophet M in all this ?
Atheist here- What makes you think these were Biblical expressions? When the Bible used them, it was using existing expressions.
Well God teaches man by the pen according to the Quran. By your logic you cant be an atheist anymore, because you dont accept that there can be something without something being in existence before it

@@justice70567 All religions are man made. 3/4 of the stories Quran are edited copies from Biblical myths and legends, which were made up by writers of the books that formed the Bible, or copied from ancient Babylonian, Greek, Canaanite and Egyptian myths. The similarities do not support the common divine origin, because these stories contradict science and proven history through archeology and comparative parallel human history. Biblical and Quranic morality is also focused on supremacy, exclusion, land annexation in the name of the divine, enslavement of women as sex slave, acceptance of slavery and belief in superstition, non existent beings, magic and the power of prayers. Also a childish belief in eternal heaven and hell with various degrees of bodily pleasures or sadistic torture for ever and ever and ever..

So that hopefully you will understand that the veiling of God is not an act of oppression on his part, but as a consequence of man's state of mind and actions.

“Uncircumcised in heart” means lack of spiritual connection- the old phrase used in the New Testament as a sign of “hypocrisy”. This “hypocrisy”’is carried on by the Quran in new ways. Not donating for war against the “enemies of Allah” - for example- could be the sign of this faithlessness. Or not “donating” one’s life.
Quran used there phrases so that learned Christians people of that time recognize quran as book of god same as bible ..it's a subtle sign for them

The “circumcision of the heart” can be seen as the remnant of the Pauline “circumcision of heart” or “circumcision in faith” - and the “apostle to the ummah” or the various different “ummas” is originally Jesus and of course - Paul, the apostle to the gentiles. Ultimately- the reciter of the Quran sees himself as a new Paul - Paul to the Arabs. He sees himself as saved from hell by Jesus, and commanded to save or intercede for people on Jesus’ behalf. Of course of course - a careful study of the Quran is needed and the examination of Pauline writings side to side with the Quran. I have seen the similarities but right now just anecdotal observations rather than careful study. I admit :)
I think that the Prophet (Peace be on him) saw himself both as the new Jesus and the new Paul (Peace be on them both). We see verses where the Rasul is depicted both are the next Lawgiver and successor to Jesus as well as the next Apostle and confirmer of what came before him, even being called a good messenger.
@@Wully02 yes I agree with you - that is a very keen observation- when we read the Quran we have the strong sense of how the reciter saw himself - he is someone who is inspired by Jesus, he seems himself as the apostle of Jesus - but also nearly as Jesus’s equal. He sees himself as someone who is “preparing the way” - like Elija or John - someone who can pray on behalf of people/ intercede on the behalf of the “sinners” - and also be like the messianic figure how the Jews saw the messiah: someone who comes with the sword. But he believes in Jesus as the messiah and fights on behalf of Jesus - to “separate the sheep from the goat” or to separate the “believers” from the “unbelievers.” All in preparation for the Last Hour/Final Judgment
@@MBiernat0711 To me the topic on the position of Jesus and Muhammad (Peace be on them both) in relation to each other is a very interesting one. We see Muhammad both as the Paraclete, the Advocate like unto Jesus, who succeeds and even abrogates him, as well as the Seal of the Prophets (as prophesied by Daniel) who is alongside the Anointed One and brings a Book which is Guardian over the Gospel, but we also see him as inferior to Jesus, as I mentioned in the previous comment he is a good messenger, and is not to be taken as a lord.
@@Wully02 Muhammad IS the Paraclete - and always has been - Because “Muhammad” is the spirit of truth, or the resurrected Jesus. The man who recited the Quran, the “prophet Muhammad” is not the Muhammad from the Quran. That is why today’s Muslims look for the prophet Muhammad in the Torah or the Gospel- and they can never find him. This is because Muhammad is the Spirit of God or the Rasul- Angel of God who appears to Abraham and Moses, and for Christians it is the spirit of the Mesiah Jesus. During the 7th century- no one would confuse the man who recited the Quran, with the Spirit of Truth - Muhammad. The Muhammad from the Quran is a spiritual being : he is the light of God, the Guide and that who inspires human prophets/ messengers with wisdom. Muhammad is not a human being but the spirit - like the Spirit of Truth from the Gospel. Again - the spiritual Muhammad and the reciter of the Quran were merged into one identity - somewhere around the 9th century- and today no Muslim / few Muslim have any recollection of what Muhammad is.
@@MBiernat0711 That is an interesting point of view. I also believe Muhammad is the Paraclete, but I believe both he and Jesus are humans. Before the coming of Muhammad we see multiple men who claimed to be the promised Paraclete, from Marcion to Montanus to Mani. This shows that the early generations of Christians believed the Paraclete to be a human figure, not an angel or divine person. In fact the Holy Spirit cannot be the Paraclete as Jesus the Anointed One says that that Paraclete will come only after his ascension, whereas the Holy Spirit existed before the Anointed One. Jesus also says the Paraclete will take from him, which fits with the Rasul taking believers from Jesus's Umma into his own. But this does not fit with the role of the Holy Spirit.

No it's because the authors of the Quran plagiarized from existing material. If we assess your claim even just a little bit, you'll say the bible is corrupt which is the Islamic dilemma. You are reliant on the bible in either case

If the Quranic reciters were aware of “eye of the rope” rather than “eye of the camel” - the whole rope metaphor would coincide with the “rope of Allah” or faith in Allah (rope is the symbol of faith) And the “ropes of the unbelievers” who “blow into the knots”, as a form or disbelief/ magic. So the contrast between the faithful and the unbelievers as those who hold on to their faith and those who hold on to the ropes of unbelief
Yes the “defiance of the signs” (miracles) is directed to the Jews - and the reciter of the Quran seems to be particularly pi- - ed by those who “believed and then unbelieved” - that is the Jews within the Islamic armies who only pretended to accept Jesus as the Messiah (and accept the commander of the believers as the APOSTLE of the Messiah) But while pretending to accept Jesus in public- they would secretly laugh and make fun of Jesus (and his apostles). “Prophet Muhammad” was mad at the Jews - and that pure hatred is still carried today - from Christianity via Islam, all the way till today. Which is completely against the teachings of Jesus.

@@dickschlau3592 the difference is that Jesus did not called out “the Jews” as hypocrites- because Jesus was a Jew living among the Jew and he was not hateful toward himself and his family. The “hypocrites” of Jesus are the boastful, arrogant, and those who steal money from the poor. Interestingly- the Quran picks up the subject of “helping the poor”, and those who don’t share resources are the “hypocrites” as well. In addition, however- the Quranic “hypocrites” add the flavor of ethnic hatred in which it is the JEWS who are the hypocrites and also the “messenger killers”. This was taken from the Jew hating Christians who hated the Jews as “Jesus killers”. All those beliefs are still playing in our social groupings based on pitting ourselves against each other by opposing teams, religiously and politically, since politics are STILL interlocking with religion all over the world.

It's to speak to a God I know personally. To have fellowship with the Father and the Son. God is not the God of the Quran nor Muhammad. He is the God of Abraham Isaak and Jacob. The God of the Prophets and People in the old testament and the new testament. Jesus, referring to the old testament "The scripture cannot be broken" Tempted by Satan he replied "It is written" three times and even Satan could not argue with that. According to God's word Muhammad is a false Prophet deceived by Satan appearing to him as as an angel of light. Everyone who doesn't believe in Jesus dies in his sins
I spent most of my life as a Christian, and a very devoutly trinitarian one at that. I can say now with full confidence that God is one and Muhammad is his apostle.

God loves you but if you do not come with all your sins into light and be washed in the blood of Jesus you are already judged.

@@thenun1846 Why? God gets his info from the Bible? For lack of any physical evidence, these people area trying different techniques for Quranic origins, like reading it as a 11th century Syriac text, or mapping various Christian concepts to some other Quranic concepts, and hope to arrive at some scholarly 'proof', a biblical text will come out of that. OT is written over 3000 years. There is no consistency in any of its concepts and beliefs. Same for NT. It was not canonized until 300-400. You can find support for any idea and position in these texts. Mohammad was a very logical person. If he knew about them, he would immediately refuse them rubbish. Furthermore, written books were very expensive, and it is unlikely that they could be obtained unless there was a state or organization providing them. You need to show where the money was coming from. Otherwise it is just a game, there is no sensible scholarship in such methods. If something is not acceptable as evidence in a court of law, without a doubt, it should be rejected. Your standards are abysmally low.

All we do is simply read about Islamic mythology in the Qur'ans, the Qur'ans themselves claim that they confirm gospels/injeel and Torah The Quran put itself in this predicament and caused people like you to go on a coping spree
@@thenun1846 Quran makes a distinction between Injeel and Christian writings. Gospels fall under the second category. It say there is nothing true about Jesus in those books. Injeel is the 'sicle' to clean up corrupted Torah, knowledge given to Jesus about the original Torah. Quran does not confirm gospels/injeel and Torah, they are corrupted.
Why are you surprized that Qur'an has some similarities with the bible verses? I don't know if you read the Qur'an but it says some of the Torah, the Pslams, some of your New Testament are originally Allah's revaluation, The Qur'an confirms the older testaments , the Rabbis corrupted the scripture removed verses of punishment and kept some of them in Sanhedrin and added verses like Deuteronomy 22 28 29
If Deuteronomy 22:28, 29 is an addition then why does Exodus 22:16, 17 say almost exactly the same thing? And, there are plenty of verses talking about the punishment to the Israelites if they break their covenant with Jehovah, as well as many verses talking about Jehovah DELIVERING THOSE PUNISHMENTS to them, so if the Jews corrupted the Bible, why did they remove only SOME of these punishments? Doesn't make much sense but maybe you can explain it.
