The SADDEST accident in the History of diving I The WILDRAKE Diving Accident.
Just about everybody in the diving industry who was around in the 1970s and 1980s will be familiar with the devastatingly tragic Wildrake diving accident. It took the lives of two young American professional divers, 32-year-old Richard Walker and 28-year-old Victor Guiel.
It happened when the early development of the North Sea oil and gas industry was going through its worst period of accidents. This particular accident sadly exemplified the lowest levels of greed, corruption, and incompetence reached by the offshore diving industry in the North Sea.
It is important to emphasize that it was not the norm; it was a worst-case scenario. Equally, it must be appreciated that the North Sea has since changed fundamentally and is now the most popular and safest place to work among offshore divers. It is undisputedly where the safety standards are currently the highest in the world.

  • i think the worst part of all this is that a damn businessman took over trying to be the one to "save everyone", and caused people to die with his greed for money and fame. in the Wildrake incident, Mike Allen also tried to come up with a plan for using a second bell to transfer the men into and bring them back up, but the guy rejected the idea. but get this: a similar accident happened only two years later called the Stena Seaspread accident where everyone survived because the divers actually had proper emergency gear to keep themselves warm, and Mike Allen (who was on scene again) used the original plan from this to use the secondary rescue bell. this time his plan wasn't rejected by some greedy freak and, well, with a second bell they were able to use a second umbilical to immediately hook up a hot water line to the divers' suits and warm them back up once they got inside. Brian legit deserves to be in jail for this

    • Those kinds of people like Brian always cause troubles at work, he is in charge even when he is not an expert in the field, i am a diver and hate dealing with those kinds of people.

    • @@marineworld99 ffr they just reek of control freaks who immediately want to seek clout for "saving the day". the fact that Allen's plan worked on a separate incident and obviously would have worked on this incident as well if he'd only been allowed to go about it is just so sad. he was just one "yes" away from saving lives but instead he got a "no" for an answer if you ever want to cover another incident that's just as infuriating due to greedy businessmen, try the Paria incident or even the Byford Dolphin incident. both are just the pinnacle of greed
