Deadpool And Wolverine - Will It Save Or Destroy Marvel?

The first teaser for Deadpool 3 dropped, and it looks... pretty good. But will this film live up to the legacy of its predecessors, or will it be a toned down Disney Marvel product?

    • Ryan is honestly going to be the only reason why Deadpool and Wolverine will be good. Disney and Marvel would fuck it up, but luckily Ryan has a lot of passion for this character, and Marvel knows a Deadpool movie with Ryan wouldn't go over well. So it'd overall have to be Ryan's way, or they wouldn't get Deadpool.

We don’t need these long term tie-in convoluted connections. Also, Deadpool and Wolverine as a title is pretty spot on with the comic titles of “Deadpool with [insert other person here]”

But after learning that R.R. wasn't going through with Deadpool 3 because of the same concern we had (the MCU basically) and suddenly announcing the next title on the franchise claiming he were given the reins, I got a bit of hope for it. Plus, Hugh Jackman is of the same mentality. Also Reynolds become fascinated by Deadpool comics, hinting on a abbreviate (like last movie) approach to Deadpool story arc. I really hope it goes through like this. If so, the box office will show the results and being very very hopeful, we can get to the Deadpool arc where he tear down the 4th wall going after the writers branding them as villains for all the shit he goes through.

    @R2RO20@R2RO202 ай бұрын
  • I know they would never even think about doing it, but: Marvel could use the "Deadpool kills the Marvel Universe" plotline from the comics to clean house and start from scratch. If this movie does extremely well and Marvel/Disney finally come back to their senses, there might be a chance to follow up with an Avengers style culmination movie where Deadpool goes on a rampage and just kills everyone. Again, I doubt it will ever happen, mostly because the majority of actors wouldn't be on board with it and even if they would, Disney probably couldn't pay them all. But it's nice to think about the possibility. And who knows, maybe OpenAI's new Text to Video model will just generate a movie like that in 5 years. A man can dream.

From a business standpoint, that makes perfect since. But this is a film, and what I really care about is the art and quality. That's why I'm more nervous about this film. But just like that, Marvel followed up with the trash projects. Might be due to the fact that these movies are all in production at the same time, so they can't learn from their return on experience. I don't think the entire MCU can follow the Deadpool formula as it is very specific to the character, but here's hoping they realize what fans want to see and what they don't. Maybe their recent brush with mortality can serve as a lesson that even the most mindless of flocks will eventually stop following if the quality drops this low

  • I'm very (edit: ok,mostly) optimistic, mainly because Reynolds has managed to to do something that is pretty singular in the modern film industry. He owns a hugely popular character in the most important way: with the fans. Legal/studio ownership be damned, Ryan IS deadpool. He's smart enough to know what he's got, patient enough not to squander it, and ballsey enough to give the studios the occasional tactical nudge. The fact that the MCU and supes in general are down has just forced the rat to be more willing to bend. Can it go wrong? Sure. Can the studio find new and invetive ways to pooch it? Sure. But im hoping they have the brains to let him do his thing. Deadpool in the comics was always supposed to be marvel poking fun at itself. If they let that continue, I'm very hopeful, at least for this little nook of the multiverse.

Disney's insistence on forcing the message into their superhero movies is a concern of course, but the inclusion of the TVA is the least of the film's concerns given the precedent in the books for its inclusion. Reynolds and Levy deserve the benefit of the doubt if they're given enough creative control. Also, the Kenobi show was always gonna have issues with pissing all over canon with the rumors of an Obi-Wan/Vader rematch(which unfortunately came to fruition). They made it infinitely worse by making young Leia the sidekick instead of Luke and inserting the awful Reva character and her nonsensical arc, but the entire foundation of that series was problematic.

One is GREEN LANTERN, which turned out to be possibly my all-time favorite "DC" movie, and was genuinely better than 95% of the comics the character ever appeared in. If it didn't include that STUPID cliffhanger leading into a sequel that never got made (GRRR) it might have been perfect. So I have no idea why most people insisted it sucked. The other is DICK, where he has a cameo as a dumb guy making out with Kirsten Dunst. One of the funniest movies I've ever seen. I love how the trailer describes it as "The ALMOST-true story" of Watergate. Even my Dad enjoyed it, and he was a Nixon fan!

    • The only way to do this right would be to do Deadpool 3 in a way that seems completely unrelated to the MCU. Just a standalone story with no MCU characters or concepts in it, but maybe a few jokes at its expense. In fact, opening monologue Deadpool should explicitly say the film won't require a bunch of outside knowledge or relate to the MCU at all. Then, and only after audiences have learned to trust Disney again, do a Deadpool 4 that ties in closer to the MCU. They really need to go all the way back to the beginning, when there was a loose collection of pre-Avengers films with disparate superheroes and the slight suggestion in the end credits scene that maybe they will do something together somehow in the future. Disney's instinct to immediately tie everything closely together in obvious, blatant ways, is why they haven't been able to make a good MCU movie in many, many, many years. Focus on telling individual, isolated stories, that are actually entertaining and don't relate to some massive all-encompassing storyline, and people will actually show up to watch. Anything else just means audiences have to do a bunch of homework, and they're unwilling or unable to do that, so they won't watch the new stuff, or won't understand it if they do. The only audiences Disney can have with this are the trained seals who will clap at literally anything, and they're a small, and shrinking demographic. Disney isn't capable of making good decisions with this because they've invested so much money on their crappy streaming shows and a bunch of crappy movies with superheroes nobody cares about or ever heard of before. They need to drive more people to Disney+ somehow, and their strategy is to make everything tie in with that Disney+ exclusive content. It's just the sunk cost fallacy at this point. Instead of decanonizing everything from the streaming service and shutting it down for good, they will never stop trying to make it relevant and essential viewing for people who just want a good standalone story at the movie theater with superheroes they know and love.

  • The problem with 4th-wall breaking humour is that it doesn't work when it's done in criticism of something people hate. It works when it's done in celebration of something people love. That bit at the start about Deadpool 1 being a breath of fresh air in a tired MCU formula in *2016* is some absolute top-tier revisionist history. 2016 was peak MCU. Captain America Civil War and Doctor Strange were released that year and were both incredibly well received. The following year had Guardians 2, Spiderman: Homecoming, and Thor: Ragnarok. All colossally successful as well. Deadpool 1 came into the scene and said "boy, superhero movies can be a bit silly can't they?" and people laughed along because a lot of that stuff is also why we love them. She Hulk's 4th wall breaking didn't work because it was criticizing instead of celebrating. That kind of 4th wall breaking just comes across as preachy, self-serving, and egotistical. It doesn't make you laugh, it just makes you roll your eyes and feel the writers really love the smell of their own shit because the whole thing comes across as one big self-pat on the back. Especially because the meta-commentary is done via parody that necessarily exaggerates the premise that it's poking fun at, which when taken as actual critique quickly falls foul of being strawmanned. If Deadpool 3 plans to wink-wink-nudge-nudge say "isn't the MCU awful now? wouldn't it be better if it was like THIS?" it will fail horribly. Even though I absolutely think the MCU *IS* awful now. You don't fix that by just acknowledging it as a joke because all that says is that you KNOW what you are producing is shit but you're doing it anyway. (That's probably the case, but still a dumb thing to admit.) I normally like your analysis of things and think you're spot on, and more fair than most other YT MCU critics. But this one doesn't feel very fair to me.

They shot opening scenes of wolverine, fighting in different wars, which Jackman, Reynolds, and everybody were very excited about because they were cool scenes, and they set up the rest of the movie. Then Disney head Bob Iger decided to cut all that out because he wants a kid friendly movie. Could he get worse? Then he wanted to write and shoot a fight scene between wolverine and the X-Men but all the X-Men have their genders reversed. I think Jackman and Reynolds refused to reshoot that. He’s made multiple movies with Reynolds and did Real Steel with Jackman which is such a great underrated film, not to mention he’s been heavily involved in Stranger Things. Ryan Reynolds also cares so deeply for Deadpool, and I trust his involvement in this to assure it will be good at the very least. The trailer captured the Deadpool energy really well, and knowing the character, the movie will probably poke fun at how reliant on nostalgia and cameos modern entertainment has become. The rooftop conversation between all 3 Spider-Men bonding over their trauma and then working together is one of the best spidey scenes ever. The way Dafoe was utilized was brilliant. The first half of NWH was a mess but the last half was stellar. That movie also finally sold me on Tom as Spider-Man more than any other appearance.
