You can teach your cat to like their carrier. This makes going to the vet easier, and can even help every evacuate safely in case of an emergency.

When it comes time to bring your cat to the vet, they magically become psychic ninjas
They are always psychic ninjas! It’s just that most things don’t concern them too much. Whereas a trip to the vet does and is usually something they hate! So they react to it.
my brother takes care of that stuff. That way when she gets home she is mad at him and happy with me.
LOL had to cancel vet as kitty sensed it and wouldnt come inside...
ikr, i’ve got to get my cat to the vet and she attacked my dad and is now in my room, on my bed and terrified
I have an 8 yr old skittish and aggressive stray kitty named Bella whom I rescued from the streets of Los Angeles when she was 18 month old. Its a nightmare trying to catch her for her annual dental visits. Its frustrating and stressful for her and myself. I've tried so many strategies, lures, treats, you name it (I've been a cat mommy for decades!). My Vet prescribed Gabapentin sedation to chill her out (give the night before and the morning of the visit), however if she's chilled out under my bed, there's no way I can get to her! Grrrrr.....I've canceled Vet appts. due to this. I don't want to jeopardize her health solely because I'm unable to catch her. Oh she's a biter and scratcher when I try to pick her up just to cuddle. HELP CatDaddy.........can you make a home visit????
I think my cat is broken,... he doesn't like boxes, tight spaces, warm places, plushy or soft things.... He loves his 50cm/diameter flat wooden bowl though!
Mmm, maybe he can travel in his wooden bowl?
It took a while to get my cats to like boxes. They only like big boxes
My cat fears boxes 16 yrs old,She has never let me hold her .toys. Wont play with Toy mice .dont play with anything. This is what I must get into a carrier. Amazon has carriers with all scratch-proof walls that are transparent with a 12 inch door. Tr
Same with mine, although lately he's been enjoying my garden bathtub, when I'm not bathing
That's hilarious!
Gotta go to the vet at 4PM. At 1PM start putting the cat into the carrier. Works for me everytime :))
Flaviu Popa so the cat stays in the carrier for 3 hours?
Pizzles Cat Time no. It takes three hours to catch them and get them in.
Flaviu Popa oh boy either way that's pretty tough! Who has all that time! I bought my cat a bigger carrier last week before her trip to the vet and she immediately wanted to go in it. All I did was buy her a blue suede cat bed. It's shaped like the letter o. It fits right in the cat carrier. The only thing I didn't like is it did slide around a little bit during Transit. I also take her for walks outside it seems silly but it gets her used to the carrier without going to the vet. She loves the carrier now.
Pizzles Cat Time I even tried once a brand new dog carrier (scent free). They just hate it.
Y so early in the carrier?
What really helped me was putting my cat's food bowl in the carrier. That way, she associated her carrier with feeding time rather than going to the vet. Now, if I have to take her to the vet, I just time her feeding such that I can use it to lure her into the carrier, and then take her to the vet after I get her in there. Would definitely recommend.
Yes and frequently the cat has got to be not fed for at least 12 hours before going to the vets
I tried this with my cat in the past. Left it on the floor, even took the door off, made it comfy in there for her, left it down for days... ... she never went in there once. So, the struggle continues, which I hate as much as she does. I had to reschedule a checkup at the vet's just the other day, because she ran and hid, in a house with numerous hidey spaces. Rescheduled for today... wish me luck, lol.
Oh boy! Did kitty get to the vet yet?
Did it work?
I literally carry my at into the car, and into the vet. She doesn’t run at least.
Try putting a high reward treat in there? Like Tuna or something?
Same... our cat ended up not going to the vet that day. We had to reschedule
We always just left the carrier on the floor and open with a few toys in it and the kitties got used to it without any fear and apprehension :-)
Same here. All my carriers are left out and open. It's used to hide toys and treats. One of my fur babies used to 'disappear' regularly and turned out it was napping in the carrier. The vets used to comment on how easy it was to get my cats into their carriers. I just opened the top flap and in they would merrily go. I took that as high praise. Like Jackson says - take away the association and animals just chill about it. Bribery with treats also win! 🤩
Same here
We had to start doing this too after our neighbor (we live in apartments all in one building) set their stove on fire. We ended up having to put our cats in our car and hope they wouldn’t do too much damage because we couldn’t find the carriers. Now? Those baby’s are out and stay in the same place no matter what. The fact that they now love their carriers is just a bonus lol
I've been making the mistake of putting the carriers in the closet, so of course when my babies see the carriers come out and hear that zip noise they go off running I've had the carriers out and open the last few days and who do I see sleeping in the carrier? My noisiest protester lol
Did the same but once Door is closed, moving, she freaks out and starts yowling 😥
We adopted a stray. Before his vet appointment we tried making him comfortable in the carrier using pretty much all the steps here. 5 days were not enough, and in the end we still had to force him in when the day came. 😢 Now back to square one, trying to undo the trauma and make him comfortable with it. Thanks for the tips!
I’ve always had pets who loved the carrier. I just leave it out and they use them like an alternative napping spot. Most animals love boxes so why not a carrier. If the only time they see it is after being chased around the house and then stuffed inside it’s no wonder they fight it. Thanks for the video. I will send links to friends.
Asti Asti my cats just know when it's vet time and they go crazy. Otherwise, if I try to get them into the carrier at any random time they don't mind.
My cat loves her carrier now that I take her for walks in it! She even sleeps in the carrier because I bought a little cat bed and put it in there. Thanks for the awesome video!
This event was incredible. Older cat - SpotSpot. Younger sisters - BabyKitty & Woolfie. Had never been able to pick up Woolfie (was feral/tamed). SpotSpot and BabyKitty had had their days at the vet this year. Time for Woolfie. Minutes were still ticking by, carrier had been on the floor for 2 weeks with catnip and treats in it as enticements. Could not lure Woolfie in it. So I was resigned to call and cancel Woolfie's appointment at and the vet. The I just casually turned to SpotSpot and said "help me SpotSpot, how am I going to get Woolfie in the carrier to go to the vet?" Within seconds she/SpotSpot was IN the carrier! Woolfie and BabyKitty were watching, as soon as SpotSpot saw them watching she came out AND BabyKitty went in it! Then BabyKitty came out and low and behold .... Woolfie went in it! How is that for animal human telepathy! We went to the vet and for the first few days after the vet visit Woolfie laid down on the open door (flat on floor) of the roller carrier like she was ready to go again at the same time of the morning. Miracles never cease and these "girls" never cease to amaze me! They are so much more intellient than we give them credit for!!!!
Thank you so much for sharing this! It gives me hope again. I have two feral cats that by now I can pet but I would NEVER be able to pick them up to put them in a top-opening carrier. they put up such a fight with the "cover with a blanket- method" that my strength is not enough. one time I had the claws ofhis hind leg hit my face only 1/4" below my eye. So..... will try and make a nice bed out of it now. It is not that he is afraid of the carrier but afraid of being picked up.... guess he has to learn that he just got a new comfy bed where he even gets goodies. I so hope he will really go in there since I WANT to be responsible and take him to the vet when needed!
My kitty LOVES her carrier, both of them! (I have a hard-shell for car rides and a soft-sided one for flying since she's an ESA) She loves going places with me, so I don't just take her to the vet, she goes to pet-friendly shops with me, sometimes we go to the park, she's an adventure cat! She only freaks out about the carrier when she doesn't have her harness on as well, mainly because I've taught her that the harness is a safe thing, even though it took forever to teach her to actually walk on it. It took looots of treats... So many treats. But now she's an adventure kitty who loves going places with me and meeting people, so I suppose I did something right!
Your cat is an ESA? Give me a break
Hey Jackson. You changed my cats lives. Always learning
We need another dude in the white household
Isaac Guedes hey issac
My cat is totally fine with the carrier until you close the door. The moment that happens she FREAKS. I’m talking somersaults, digging in the bottom until the tips of her nails start chipping, and making sounds I can only describe as screaming. I open the door back up and she’s totally fine happy purring normal self. By the time we get to the car, she is completely quiet and still. but if I have to put her in there because pest control is at our apartment, she will be losing it the entire time. I now keep her in the walk in closet for that, but I’m still afraid she will hurt herself if there is a point where I have to keep her in her crate longer
Natalie, that is what Jackson is saying. There is a negative association with the carrier. And , I had not thought about it myself. But, if you try to make the carrier a safe place with good things...hopeful kitty will get over that. Leave the carrier out, with favorite blankets or beds, toys and treats. Do not close the door, just leave it out there with good things in it. Let kitty come and goes as it pleases. I'm going to try in the hope it will de-stress Vet visits. Hope it works for us both!!!
Natalie Palmer I would say put her in when there is no where to go. Show her that the carrier is not a bad place and we don't always go to bad places with it. Give her treats to give her a positive association, repeat. Keep doing this for about 2 weeks. It should help.
Steward of Autumn hi Steven will you marry me
Training my cat to love her carrier helped SO MUCH when I had to drive from Florida to California. The hotels were the worst. We would try to keep her in the bathroom but she would just yowl and yowl. She was only happy if she was sleeping in her carrier while we were sleeping. (I don't trust "pet friendly" hotels after my friend lost her cat because there was just enough room behind the bed for the cat to escape in an open vent.) We started the carrier training when we got her. She was brought home in a small kitten size soft carrier that she LOVED to play in. So we would zip it up for a few minutes at a time when she jumped in it. When she got too big, we upgraded her to the hard sided carrier. Then we would just lock her in it when we had to deep clean the apartment or bring a lot of groceries in. I've only had one or two instances where she just did not want in the carrier and that was just because we were visiting my mom's house and she didn't want to leave. Now, I leave the carrier tucked under the side table that's right next to my bed with the door off and I often come home to her curled up in there sleeping. It makes me so happy to see her so happy in her carrier.
Pawsome video!! 🐾🐈🐾 Don’t forget to tell folks how to choose the right size carrier! I used to work for a vet & some people used carriers that were too small, too many adult animals in one carrier, leaving a full length lead on in the carrier, the flimsy escapable cardboard box or none at all. Safety first!! 🐈🐾🐾🐾🐾🐾
Years ago my now-husband had to take his big grown-up cat to the vet. It was the first time I saw his ridiculous bunny-size pet carrier and had a fit of laughter that wouldn't end. He had bought this tiny carrier when his cat was a kitten and it never crossed his mind that the latter could one day outgrow that thing. After I finished laughing I drove home and got him one of my spare large carriers instead.
Also make sure the carrier has built in notches for a car seat belt, if driving with your cat.
This is really important! I've been just wondering lately, how large is enough? Our carrier seems to be quite fit for my Mielu but sometimes I doubt if it's not too tight. On the other hand, she likes tight spaces and makes it fine after getting inside. She hates the process of getting inside though. Maybe I should get a larger carrier and start it all over after all 😸
I have been putting treats in the career when my cat is busy for her to discover the treat on her own and associate it with the carrier
That's what I have been doing. 2 years later did it work?
@@Z5Z5Z5 did it work for you? i was gonna do this too. just got her carrier today
Our cat carrier is always in our living room without the door on it so the cats can go in and out whenever they want. They often sleep in it. The door goes on it a bit before we go to the vets but so far have had no problems.
I never thought about using the carrier as a bed! One of my cats is really cool about the carrier because I put catnip and treats in it when I first introduced them to them, but the other is still wary, I'm going to try this!
I feed my cats in their litter box (it's fully set up). It stops them from stealing eachothers food and they are so use to going in there for food that they will go in there if I put treats in there. For the door, I'll occasionally let it swing close but I don't lock it so they can push it open and get out
Thank you so much for this video, Jackson. I went through this process with my two cats, and they are both much less apprehensive of going in their carriers. Today, I took one for a check up at the vet, and within an hour of us getting back home, he had gone back into the carrier of his own accord and had a little cat nap. We live on the 21st storey of our apartment building, so it makes me feel better knowing that in case of an emergency, we won't have to worry so much about struggling to get them into their carriers.
Great information! Thank you!!
Every piece of advice I’ve taken on board and my boys love their carriers. They sleep in and on top of them and when we need to go somewhere, I just pat the front and they both climb in! We go on road trips to nowhere and they went on a social visit today and were totally fine. Bless you JG! Xx
Good advice, thank you !
I figured out a good way a very long time ago. I leave it assembled WITH the door open. I place his favorite treat in there once in a while. Now, he thinks it's a cool place to sit because every now and then there are treats hidden inside.
Excellent timing on this video! Just about to move with my 3 and a half year old boy and he's going by train for the first time! 😃 I've had 3 carriers for him (2 soft 1 hard) and he liked sleeping in the hard carrier but was always less nervous about travel in the soft ones. Gonna start setting his new carrier up right away! Thanks!
So agree with all the advice offered here. I have had three cats all of whom have love, love, loved their Sherpa carriers even sleeping in them at night. I always put soft fluffy pad in the bottom and keep the carrier in the bedroom with the top open.
Thank you . Obvious yet I needed these pointers. My cats are grateful to you.
Thanks for the reminder! Your solution to the cat carrier "problem" is just what I needed to hear - again! I have several cats who all get their (wet) food in their "condo" using these same principles. That way 6 of them are out of the way when I feed the older, "special" cats who just hate to eat around other cats. AND I need to take a couple of them to the vet. Training them to like their carriers is going to be much easier than trying to stuff them into carriers.
Love this! My cat always runs when she hears the carrier. I'm excited to work on this! Thank you Jackson! 💙
My cat loves the vet and is really friendly and rubs against them. She just hates being enclosed in the carrier. Once i pop open the door she comes out and is perfectly happy. I think it’s because she is bossy and likes to be in charge and exploring everything
Jackson I've always appreciated your positive content. I don't even have a cat, but I've always found your videos super informative and interesting :) Thanks for being you!!
Jackson you are so awesome! I know you can habituate a cat to the carrier. Our newest addition was a little starved, injured, feral tom that appeared on our porch and could not walk. We coaxed him in with food. Got some food in him, got him use to us and other cats, rid of fleas; took perhaps over 4-6 weeks. But... we still had to get him in carrier and to the Vet. We brought the carrier in and left it, we put soft tee shirts and towels in it and there was always some no sodium tuna in it. Success! But, I have never thought to do this with other kitties. They know what that carrier is for and they are stressed out before we even get to the Vet. I had not thought, if we make the carrier less stressful, the entire Vet visit will be less stressful. THANKS for the change in my thought pattern!!!
good information. I trained my girls to accept their kitty carrier. This training made vet visits so much easier.
0:14 The only thing I can think of on cats hating the carrier or backpack is when taking them to the vet the carrier and backpack is the only thing that takes them to that place besides your car that id but if you actually train them to get inside the carrier or backpack and associate it with good things then they'll love their backpack but don't know about the carrier since you have to carry it everywhere you go
I ADORE Jackson Galaxy! I am a life long cat owner, but he has taught me so much!
this is definitely true, we have 2 cats and they treat their carrier as their cocooney homey space. they would sometimes chill inside. we just leave the carrier open for them to use. It was also never a problem to get them to the vet, it only takes us a few mins to put them inside. However, when we get to the clinic it also takes time and effort to get them out of the carrier as well
Thank you! We're moving in a little over a month and I didn't know how to get her into the carrier. Great advice!
Hey Cat Daddy! your book is sensational!!! sending love from Brazil!!!
Today I bought a carrier and was deciding between small or bigger carrier good thing I bought the bigger one since my cat likes a wide open space so far she seems happy and comfortable
My cat was raised with her carrier being her bed since she was only a few weeks old. We didn’t even do it on purpose for that reason. And she doesn’t just love the carrier, she loves the vet. It’s quite strange. She is just over one year old right now.
well my cat just walks in when I put it on the floor....she falls for it every time and it still makes me laugh😂
This was so much help THANK YOU! Question, Is there any chance you can do a Q&A about our Cat problems?
Im a dog trainer and I 100% agree with this. I leave my cats carrier on the floor with treats hidden inside. I also put catnip so they can go in and have fun. Positive association!!! 😁😁
Thank you so much!! I knew there must have been a system to positively reinforce the relationship between cats and carriers but I didn’t have the methodology. Now, I’ll be able to reassure my kitties properly and make them have their safe den in them ☺️ Thank you very much!
THIS works even on older cats. I'm amazed how well cat carrier training is going after an EPIC cat carrier fail. Truly, thank you!
I’m new to your page. Someone mentioned you in a cat group I’m in, and when I searched up cat carriers, you showed up and it’s brilliant!! Subscribed 🤷🏼♀️
Thank you for making this video. If all goes well, when we move, this video will be the main reason why we were able to get the cat to at least tolerate being in the carrier for the journey
This is very helpful! Trying to wrestle a 20 lbs cat into a carrier when he’s desperately trying to prevent himself from going in is no fun! My mother has many a shirt shredded by this exact scenario. Forget getting him into a bath when his excess floof is dirty and matted. We leave that up to a professional groomer to deal with. He’s a very strong boy!
Hi Jackson! my mums boys will jump into their carrier, she always puts the blanket off their bed into it so they have the scent of home :) My Sphynx loves her carrier... surprisingly she is very much a ground dweller. If i get it out she is all over it and straight in :) Her previous owner was able to take her places like the vet on a harness though she used to be very relaxed
Thanks for the tips! I can't wait to start desensitizing my cat to a new carrier on Thursday. I wouldn't be surprised if my cat has some ptsd towards a carrier because he flips out by repeatedly clawing at the carrier door trying to break out for almost 10 minutes straight! So I wanted to start completely fresh with a new carrier that will hopefully be more comfortable and less stressful for him.
I've been doing this, works great! though I've never taken the tops off, and the doors are propped open. They've always been a permanent feature of their home.
This helped so much, my kitty didn’t mind the carrier until it became his transport to the vet. Thank you for explaining his mindset
A usually have My Carrier out all the Time, My boy Loves it! Sleeps in it all the Time, and never was an issue to take in carrides in the Carrier. After a small car accidentally though, he goes mental as soon as the Carrier leaves the house. I can walk him around the house, not an issue, but as soon as were outside, he Will freak out. If Im going a Short distance I let him be loose in the car and hes fine, and if that wont work, for example if its a longer trip, more Cats etc, hes in the Carrier with a cover over it too Keep him somewhat calm. He does though, Love the vet! :D He really makes sure the vet Loves him the most!!
I'm going to start this tonight. I had previously set up the carrier with my cat's favorite blanket in it for bedding, let her explore and inspect it, etc, and while it was easy enough to get her into it, she still started crying in there, which eventually stopped after she burrowed under the blanket. Anyway, I like these ideas a lot and they make a lot of sense to me. Thanks for sharing!
I always keep the plastic and backpack carriers out all the time. I do carrier and car desensitization training sessions. I sometimes I take the cats with me to PetSmart or with me to take out the trash in my apartment building. Sometimes I take them with me to get gas or to the drive thru. Sometimes I put the cats in the carrier for about 15 minutes and then let them out without going anywhere. I don't want the cats associating the car and carrier with only going to the vet
you're a lifesaver Jackson! getting my kitties into the carriers is my only problem with my cats. I'll need to try these. thank you!!
Thank You for this advice, I need to try it now. My cats have been to the vet, and across country in carriers, so they are not pleased at all to see them, I don't want them to be terrified of it.
Dear Jackson Galaxy, I'm sorry for writing here, but I wasn't sure where else I could write to you. But I hope you might have advice for all cat guardians on the question on when it is time to say goodbye. I’m from Germany living not far away from Heidelberg. Last week I came across your you tube channel comforting myself by watching cat videos. I love your fabulous way in approaching all the cats with a sensitive and respectful understanding. Some clips really touched my heart. Sweet Katrina especially. I hope she is now receiving that unconditional love and affection she is radiating herself no matter if the problem could be solved or not. And thanks for being an ambassador to cat’s needs, issues and wellbeing. Especially for your appeal on not declawing cats. I hope you will be happy to hear that here in Germany declawing is considered as an inhumane mutilation which no vet would perform without medical indication or some utmost necessity. It would be illegal otherwise. I know you mainly deal with the behaviour of the cats and their guardians. But after I just very recently had to make a heart-breaking decision I wondered If you also could give advice to all these loving cat moms and dads on the Question on how to know when it is the right time to say goodbye. I know although it tears your heart apart this is part of being a responsible and caring guardian. And though everybody tells me it was the right decision I still feel so torn about this. And maybe your advice can help other cat owners to cope better, because inside they are more confident that they made the right decision at the right time. It’s not that I didn’t have the notion that I might be confronted with the situation one day. Yet what I hadn’t figured is that apart the emotional turmoil it wasn’t so easy decide as I thought it would be . In my inner eye I had prepared myself for a situation where it was totally obvious that having her relieved was the only reasonable option. But in reality the situation wasn’t as clear as I thought it would be. Well Winkey had nearly reached an age of 16 when I brought her to the vet, because somehow I had noticed that she had lost considerable weight only in a few days. Well sadly the blodtest revealed that she was suffering from renal insufficiency combined with an severe urinal tract infection. Well, but the test results still gave us hope, that after some medical care it might be able to stimulate her remaining kidneys to kick back in and that she might be able to cope for a while. I know we tried everything infusions, appetizer, special Food, phosphatebinders . But in the end…. all of our hopes which had been encouraged by any glimmer of some ups had been in vain. Her appetite stayed low and she kept loosing wait on a large scale ….up to 0,27 Pounds a day. Until she only weighed 7.7 pounds and the diarrhoae set in. A new bloodtest revealed that the serum phosphate level had risen to the maximum. Combined with the diarrhoea a very clear indication that the kidney was about to be failing. If you are reading this you might be thinking of the cat being in an apathetic situation. But although she was clearly weekend, she still walked around even jumping to the places where she wanted to be. Even more so when she got painkillers. But I also that know cat’s are masters in hiding pain…. This made the decision even harder. And I could’t make the decision right away. So I took her home to being able to say goodbye and granting her one last evening in peace and at home. But with the painkillers wearing off and an upcoming holiday the next day, where there would be no vet available to relieve her from pain I finally did make the decision. I’m glad and thankful that the vet did agree to come to our home, I don’t know if I would have been able to do this if he hadn’t. After being part of my life since the moment she was born she passed away in my arms peacefully. Dear Jackson, I hope by sharing this, you might be able to give some advice to other cat guardians having to face this heart-breaking situation. I would be thankful if you did. Kind regards from Germany Siobhan
OK Your Totally Right. Your a blessing to all cat owners.!!!!
super helpful, thanks! 🙏
I have the wicker basket type with a very wide wire door so he doesn't feel trapped even when it's shut. It's just a cosy little hang out spot that sometimes goes to visit his friends at the vets office.
I had been planning to do these things with my cat... until I had to try to take her to the vet before I'd gotten her desensitized to the carrier. Fortunately, my vet was able to prescribe her an anti-anxiety medicine, and we'll try again to get her in there today. After a week or two post-vet, I'll start redoing what little we've done already.
Such good advice!
Also I'd like to add that even tho pets dislike getting checked and getting shots at the vet, the actual veterinarian can make SUCH a big difference! For emergency we have a vet just a block away, but my pets don't like him at all, he's a good vet, but my pets don't like being handled by him. But then we have our regular vet for check ups and such, and my little girl and my dog LOVE her!! She's so sweet and soft and honestly I didn't see one pet unhappy going to her haha. The actual veterinarian you go to makes a whole lot of difference for your pets experience, and if it'll be a vet that your pet likes, it'll add a lot of positivity to being in a carrier or a drive in the car!! Much better to pick a vet that your little furry friend likes, just like us people will decide what doctor to see depending on how we feel about getting treated by them!
This really helps, thanks so much Jackson! You've a galaxy brain!
This is so helpful, thank you. 😀Greetings from belgium
Just picked up some of your toys on bogo for my Omally. He absolutely loves them. I caught him playing by himself and it’s so great. I’m trying to get him to lose weight because it’s affecting his health. Lately his been lazy and not in the mood to play. Thank you so much
Makes perfect sense. Although I prefer to buy a new carrier first. A bigger one with an opening on top.
My sweet little petite, wallflower kitty, Cali has torn the door off of every pet taxi I've put her in, lol. I have to use the larger metal dog crates for her. She 10000% HATES to be confined so I'll be trying these with her. Oddly enough though, she's fine with a kitty stroller.
I have to be honest....I am dog lover...just remodeled house...and would not give into a pet.....butt caved because of my daughter...and I have to tell you...I love this cat... with the help of your videos I am growing very fond of this cat...dang why did I give them such a bad wrap....I was opting to have him declawed...butt asked my self would I like to have my knuckle cut....his personality is amazing...he has only defecated once and that was because he was frightened and did know where to go...haven't had a problem since...have put in the work to understand him....and he is great love his personality....
When we had our cat mama in her carry case for when we did a big move up country we had to keep her in the carry case upstairs whilst we were moving furniture. when she was let out because there was still biscuits in the crate from the move and one of her towals, she wouldn't leave it xD and now whenever the cage door is open she's imidietly inside to see if there's more biscuits, IV never had a problem getting her in to the crate since! IV even been able to travel on the train with her in her carrier on the table tray in front of me and she only meowed 5 times out of a 4 hour trip! She basically just went to sleep and when a noise woke her up and she realised she was moving she would give a little meow to make sure we were still with her, I'd pop my fingers through the holes and give her a chin tickle
I needed this video because I took my cat to the vet 2 weeks ago and he meowed all the way to the vet and kept scratching to get out. I felt so bad and I kept trying to talk to him and rub him through the little swing door on the carrier. Now I know what I have to do because he has another appointment on June 1st and I was dreading it.
I have a material carrier that opens on both sides with zips, put it in her base camp with a blanket so she uses it for play and naps etc. so getting her in there is never problem - though it helps that I actually got her while working at a vet practice so she doesn't mind the trip haha
Thank you so much for posting this...getting my cat in her carrier is Bothersome. I'm hoping this helps.
We've left our carrier out with the lid on since the day we brought her home. We call it her little "house." She likes to jump in it and be carried around the house while we do mundane tasks. If ever I need to take her to the vet I just carry it around the house without her in it and she chases me around until I let her in. I give her a treat, shut the door, and carry her around with me until we're ready to go. She loves it! She's even got her own special towel we keep in there for her. The carrier ends up being a huge comfort to her at the vet. We just pop the lid off and she sits there unless the vet moves her.
2:42 - just bought this cat carrier for my stray cat that I’m adopting !
Thank you for this! I’m going to try it with our Princess Garnet. Last time we took her to the vet, she was so scared, she peed. I just felt so bad for her, but I’m definitely going to give this a try!
Thank you I really needed this
I tried to feed my first cat in the carrier. She would claw the food out of the bowl and the carrier and eat next to it. I still put a blanket or a towel over her head when placing her in. Oddly enough, she seems to be quite comfortable once she's in there. My second cat goes into the carrier, no problem, has done so from the very first moment and even gets comfortable in there, despite hating the vet with a vengance. I've tried using the carrier as a bed as well. First cat won't go in there, no matter what. Second cat ventures in sometimes, but mostly just plays on top of it...
The first cat carrier I got for them they hated but after I got this double backpack carrier they love it they even sleep in it they get in it when ever I need them to
Omg... i needed this video like rn!
Thanks, I never thought about putting something on the carrier door to keep it open. They do like going in there sometimes but if I can get the door to stay open all the time maybe they'll go in and stay more often. Sometimes catnip works for moms cat. But cat's can be smart little suckers and they know what's about to happen. It's like they can just sense when it's doctor time. I will try this though. Thanks 😊
My cats' carriers also double as condos at home and I feed them in it. It works great. No fear.
All of my cats are fed in there carriers, they actually know there "colour" carrier and jump into it every meal time . That way I can make sure I know how much each cats eats . :)
That's awesome!!! Fantastic idea!
@@RIPHenry thanks :) i have a video of it on my youtube channel in the "cat Tails " section
I leave two carriers out and she loves them. Plus, I have a stroller that I take her out in when I walk the dogs. She loves it. She is part of our pack walk. The vet is down the road and I will walk her to vet in her stroller. She will even hop back into it when she’s ready to leave the vet. I started this from day one. It’s the positive experiences. I haven’t had to ever force her into a carrier. ❤️
This actually worked pretty well for us, though we did it a little different. We left the carriers down without the doors and put their favorite little donut pillows in there. Our bedroom is where they sleep, and where the carriers stay. It served us pretty well when one of our animals had to have an eye removed. She had to be kept separate from her sibling, but he was used to sleeping in the room with us too. So, we switched it up a little and we would put them in the carriers for the night. They weren't super thrilled with it, but they learned pretty quick to where at night they'd usually walk in mostly on their own. It also helped us re-socialize them. When we finally were able to let them mix they were a bit hissy. But having each carrier down with their beds in it gave them "their" place to go. I find sometimes the little donut bed helps at the vet, too. If one of ours doesn't want to settle at the vet, I've found they do pretty well with the bed up on the exam table.
When I got my first kitten, a friend told me "leave the carrier out wherever my kitten was hanging out and then it's not a bad thing for kitty to think "i'm going to the vet's" an run away to hide, it worked perrrrfect And also the carrier became a "safe haven" for my kitten's future traveling. Thank You Jackson, You Are Aamazing! \\\\=^..^=////
Thanks for the vid! I would be curious if you have any advice on traveling with the car for cats - especially longer rides. I need to move in a couple of months and I am very anxious of how my kitty will handle the trip.
Bless u, sir!!
I take Daisy for walks on leash and in her carrier.. she walks right in and lays down no problem :) We have the carrier set up on a shelf with the door open and she goes sin all the time to play. she been like that from the moment we got her oddly XD
My cats do not seem to hate being at the vet -- in fact, at Guybrush's last vet trip the doctor had trouble reading his pulse because he was purring loudly -- but they do hate car trips. I have used items like towels and clothing in the carriers to try to ease them, but I normally keep them in a closet. I will try your suggestions in the hopes of reducing their stress during car trips.
My kitties always jump right into their carrier, I leave them open for them to play with, they just think it's a box to play with. I just put them in a different spot and they are like "ooh a new box!"
Lol
I have to gladly say my cat sees her carrier and immediately gets in it. She likes to lay down in the backseat of the car... I take her to my fiances but she's also been to a lot of vet appointments but she never seems to focus on it. The carrier is her friend
I never out away the carrier when i brought my cats home from the shelter. This is so the cats don't associate the carrier and the car ride with just going to to the vet
It used to be such a STRUGGLE but then I started leaving the carrier out and in about a month he would be chilling, napping and playing in there. Sometimes I leave a few treats too so that she kinda has to search in there. thx for the great video tho!
nice tips thanks
love your videos and I always try to follow your tips. usuallymy cat goes into the box by command or when i say "go in" and give him a treat he stays there. i moved it from the bedroom to the living room now since he seems to have trouble with his stomache so he doesnt react on treats and im not sure on how to get him into the box. i hope putting the box into the social space will help
Okay...I’m going to try this one more time 😒
If your kitty has a really negative association with the carrier, it might be helpful to make the carrier look different (stickers, marker, etc). You could also clean it so it doesn't smell like the vet. And then be really patient, it takes some cats a long time to trust the carrier again. On that note, I would start this process without any foreseeable vet visits in the future. For my kitty, I ended up buying a new carrier and putting little blankets, catnip, toys, and treats in the carrier. He only gets his treats in the carrier, and I do that pretty much every day. My kitty hated his old crate - he would run at the sight of it, and continuously got better at fighting me on getting in the carrier. Now it's like his little kitty cave that produces all of his favorite things. He even chooses to sleep there most nights. Good luck! It might take a while but it will be worth it in the end.
To my experience it is pretty easy to get the cat in a Carrier is if one is relaxed. IT is Not just only that the cat is associating the Carrier With going to the Vet. If we are in an emotional distress because we already Know This is going to be a hard fight the cat will Pick up that emotional Energy and in result of that be fearing something Really Bad is up. So to my experience IT is Best to Pick her up in a sort of going Bye Situation und placing her Inside as if There was Nothing to it. I Know This is Hard. ... I had my First Success when I was in a hurry. ....Not having the time to think about IT. .. Since then She even had Less fear going to the Vet. ...
I agree, any stress you have is going to translate to your cat. For me, my cat would run just seeing the carrier even if I was just pulling it out of the closet with no association to him. So, I think it's a combination of the two factors and really depends on your cat and what their experience has been.
Rachel that’s a very good point. With my cat Tabitha, their is no winning with her, She is a five year old 16 pound anxious cat every-time I bring the carrier out she bolts upstairs so I tried leaving the carrier in my living room out a week before the appointment so all three of my cats can see the carrier Jada the three year old middle child and goes into because I’m guessing it’s warm and comfortable to her because she is thin and has very short hair but when it’s time to go to the vet it’s a whole different story the same applies to Chole the mystery stray. I tried associating the cages with food aka putting treats into the cage or their food bowls near theme but it seems to not make much of a difference cause during the 30 minute car ride to Waldorf nothing much more than a symphony of yowling. But long story short I’ll try using calming spray for Tabitha the most anxious one as she tends to thrash around in the cage or use a blanket and try to associate the cages with comfort rather than fear and stress.
Natasha Reeder, good luck! I'm sorry your kitty is so anxious. You could maybe try calling your vet and asking if they have any suggestions or could prescribe an anti-anxiety medication for car rides, if that's something you would be interested in. Cats are tricky because they're so smart, never forget, and can easily become anxious. I hope you're able to find a solution that works for your little kitty!
all my 4 cats like the vet and the carriers, the just hate driving in the car... but when we arrive at the vet they startes to purr ❤️
True, sometimes the more plush the cushion of something underneath them, the less they are aware of the car movement which some kitties don't like as much :-)
I had a small dog that was the same way. She was really bad at stabilizing herself when the car made turns and stops, so she would lose her balance. Even when sitting or lying down, the movements freaked her out. She hated it, and got car sick. I put a relatively snug and sturdy dog bed in her crate. The smaller space and soft edges (and familiar bed) made her feel safer and more stable, and she started loving car rides.
I have a cat that would purr at the vets. He said it was a nervous purr and ment she was ready to defend herself if need be. He said all cats have 2 purrs, one happy, one nervous and fair based. He loved cats and found my cats very sweet and kind. Even waffles, my nervous purer. Lol
U.R.Awesome!! Thank u for all u do, my sweet boys have already benefited so much from ur wisdom & expertise...much love from Seattle (& Watson & Holmes 😻 LOL), Jackson!!
my kitten has been home 11 days and she's on her second carrier (the 1st one being a loan). she's loved both of them, ive had to put the new one to the side _closed_ cuz she won't stop fussing and playing with it...she friggin loves that thing, but I love it more! it's amazing and I don't want it scratched up more than necessary! (she'll hang out with/in it enough tho, she's always gonna love her carrier if I have any say in it.)
