    • Bang on. I’m a Christian, this has been taught in my church plenty of times. That’s the point of the story, he committed murder and adultery but he repented but it had ramifications that went through his genealogy just like God told him. Because of that transgression one of his sons raped one of his daughters to another wife and then his own son Absolom rose up to rebel and try and take his kingdom.

    • The Bible does not condone slavery. What is termed slavery in the Old Testament is indebted servitude and on the year of Jubilee they were all set free unless they chose to remain. It was a way of paying debts that couldn’t otherwise be paid.

    • Yep. Then you have Solomon who was the wisest man to date. He did many great things including building the temple. Despite his wisdom, however, he was persuaded by his wife to worship idols. The Old Testament is a series of lessons and failures. The failures lead to the flood and eventually the Savior. Everyone will know, one way or another.

"David SAW, David Took, David hid... etc etc..." but if you are interested in stuff like that go deep in the meaning of the stories I highly recommend the bible project podcasts. • some big discrepancies in the telling of the story of Tamar. After Judah lost his second son. His last son wasn't given to Tamar for two reasons, one, he was too young and the second is because Judah was afraid he might loose his last son. So he didn't promise Tamar that she will be the wife of his last son for these two reasons and not the one reason mentioned in the video. Tamar went back to her home as instructed by Judah, again that is all that Judah does, he instructs her to go and wait at her fathers house. Tamar while at her fathers home wore cloths that is synonyms for someone who is a widow and grieving. She finds out that Judah is coming to where her fathers home is because he wants to sheer his sheep, upon hearing this Tamar has a plan. She knows that she isn't pledged to Judah's last son and she wants to take it upon herself to get pregnant. So she takes for cloths that are meant for grieving and switches them for cloths that is synonyms for a prostitute at that time. Main point here is that she is wearing a head veil and as such no one can see her face. Judah walks into this town/village and sees this prostitute who is wearing a veil and he asks to sleep with her. This is where the video goes off the rails. She asks Judah what she will get in return for sleeping with him and she knows that this is her father in law and he doesn't know who she is. He says he will give her one of his sheep in his village/camp. Judah isn't at his camp/village, so this is supposed to be a promise for future payment. She asks him for a guarantee for this payment. He asks what she wants and she says she wants a seal with his cord and his staff. He agrees and he sleeps with her. Judah didn't sleep with her and not have payment, they discussed how Judah will pay her and she played him in this part of the story. Tamar isn't this poor innocent person and neither is Judah. So she goes back to her fathers home and switches into her cloths meant for grieving. Judah returns to his camp and sends a friend to pay her but he cannot find her and he returns to Judah and tells him that she cannot be found. He is embarrassed that she has his seal and staff. But he makes peace with the idea that she has stolen it. We all now know that this was Tamar's plan, she didn't want a sheep, she was playing Judah and got proof of the person she slept with. The video made it sound like Tamar became a prostitute because she wanted to make a living. This isn't true, she wanted to get pregnant from sleeping with her father-in-law. Plain and simple. She got pregnant and Judah is told that Tamar is found to be pregnant and the assertion is that she prostituted herself. Judah wants her killed but before she is killed she sends him his staff and seal. Tamar honey potted Judah and got what she felt she deserved. Moral of the story. Men need to keep it in their pants coz women who are just selling sex cannot be trusted. The other moral of the story is do what is right, Judah in his fear doesn't give assurances to Tamar that she will be married off, so when he didn't do that the rest of the story played out as it did. Judah is also the same guy who earlier discouraged his brothers from killing Joseph but instead mentioned to have him sold. Joseph lived and as per what is said in the bible he became the second highest in Egypt and also saved Egypt and his family from starvation. So Judah is seen as someone who loved his family when the rest of them were okay with killing one of them. He isn't perfect but neither is Tamar and all of them played their role.

    • Also, it was Judah's duty as the patriarch to ensure his oldest son's lineage continued because he didn't have children before he died. That's why Tamar married his next son. But their first child would've been counted as the oldest son's to ensure his lineage continued. The brother didn't like that and refused to get her pregnant and the Lord killed him. Thus the duty of continuing the Judah's oldest son's lineage fell to his youngest son. This also was the custom so that that the Tamar would be provided for. Most marriages were arranged anyways back then so this wasn't that strange. After Judah's youngest son became of age Judah shirked his duty to both provide for Tamar and ensure his eldest son's lineage out of fear that the Lord would kill that son too. (The Lord struck down his oldest son because he was wicked). What Tamar did was take it apon herself to both provide for herself and ensure her first husband's lineage. So, Tamar and Judah both sinned by fornicating but she did it for somewhat honorable reasons to pick up Judah's slack. So when Judah went to lead the stoning of her for prostituting (with him) she showed that he was lacking in his duties and morals and was more righteous than he.

      @loganwallace5854@loganwallace58549 күн бұрын
    • @@loganwallace5854 a bit mistaken here. His youngest son wasn't of age at any point in this story. Tamar assumed that Jacob wasn't going to allow his youngest to be married to her. This was her reasoning for deceiving Jacob. They were both in the wrong but Jacob says that she was more righteous than him. So the assumption here is that Jacob knew he didn't betroth his youngest son to Tamar as he was afraid he too will be killed. But they both are wrong for what they did. Who knows if Tamar even cared for any of Jacob's children. If she was married to one of them is all she wanted. Key part here is that Jacob's youngest son wasn't of age to get married throughout the story but it is revealed that Jacob's only reason was probably that he was afraid his son would be killed for the same reasons.

The Devil has a meeting with God, and God declares Job without fault, and sinless, the devil says “let me take his health away, his family, and all his belongings, and he will curse you then” This story is a sorta microcosm of my life story I lost everyone I truly loved : my wife to another man, my father (he was my best friend) to murder My 2 best friends, and the love of life, fiancé, to suicide. Job ends up suffering beyond belief physically also (soars head to foot, insomnia) Job ends up in the end getting a lesson from God, which is very interesting to read, and having an even larger family and an even happier and extended life, that has not happened to me yet and it probably won’t

  • Why would the Old Testament authors include such embarrassing details with no “happy endings” in each book? It describes the constant failures and sin from Israel’s leaders, to prove the point that no man can conquer sin, we all need a savior. The Bible states this from the very beginning with Adam’s fall followed by God foreshadowing the need for a new Adam (Jesus) as God promised in Genesis 3 someone from Eve’s offspring would conquer the serpent and redeem mankind. All of it points to Christ.

No matter the blessings the Lord God may grant and give you as well as your importance in the God's plan. We are all human and sinners capable or good and evil. No matter how important to God plan you are or are not, we all fall short of what it takes to get into Heaven. • I grew up in church and the only stories that weren't taught were 2 in i think Judges. The first is were a crowd demanded that a stranger in town be given to them so they could rape him, but the man hosting the stranger instead gave them his female servant. So they beat and gang raped the girl and afterwards, she crawls back to her masters house and dies outside his front door. If i remember right, this starts a big conflict where cities go to war with one another. The second is when a man prays to God for victory in battle and promises to sacrifice the first thing that approaches him when he gets home. So after the fight his daughter who is his only child is the first to approach him. He then lets his daughter go and grieve her virginity on a mountain with her friends for a time, and when she returns he sacrifices her.

    @jc-rq8or@jc-rq8or13 күн бұрын
    • That first one is essentially a representation of the historicity of God separating himself from Israel. The woman being raped by strangers and then murdered by her master (literally dismembered and her parts sent across all of Israel) is one of the strongest examples of how far the culture had fallen at the time, "that such a thing could happen here" is basically what everyone's response was, which is why conflict arose from it. The heaviest aspect of it being that the woman's master had become so callous that he didn't just let her die on his doorstep, he disrespected her corpse and let everyone else know about it. It was one of the ultimate examples of the fall from grace at that time in the nation's history.

What if they were drinking alcohol while discussing the Bible? What if it was beer? Whiskey? How about wine? • Anyone who says that the bible contradicts itself, DOES NOT understand the text as it was intended. Context is the most important part of the bible. They thought differently then, than we do now. David was never supposed to be a savior. Just a king. Not THE King. Sounds like she read the important parts, then interpreted them to mean something different. David is a sinner just like all of us. God didnt have to divulge what David did. He did it because he is an honest and Holy God. This lady is off her athiest rocker.

    • @@user-wf2rg5gl9hwhere did he ever accuse any one of having screws loose? You don't have to believe the bible is true to understand the point he is making. The bible isn't just one book, it is a collection of 66 books written over about 1500 years, where the most recent book was written almost 2000 years ago. It is the oldest historical text in existence. 2000-3500 years ago is a whole different universe of context and if you just read it as is, without trying to understand what was going on during that period in history, you are going to completely misunderstand what you are reading

  • You’ve never heard of these things if you haven’t read the book. If you read the book you realize it’s full of all kinds of imperfect people doing bad things. You also understand there were consequences for the bad things they did. Which is in part the moral of the story.

  • It will never cease to amaze me how many people find out horrible things are recorded in the Bible and see this as a problem. The problem for me would be a book that claims every saint was perfect, every prophet was flawless, and every king was just. I trust a book that's honest about how shitty humanity is at its core - even some of the most "famous" figures of faith - far more than I would trust a book that claims no one important to God's story did anything wrong. Knowing the vile, despicable things attributed to even important people in the bible increases my faith in it as a genuine transmission of truth - literal historical truth as much as spiritual truth.

  • David and Bathsheba was literally the first Bible lesson I had when I was a child. Factually, she recounted the events correctly. It is taught prominently in all denominations. It’s definitely in the “top 10-20” Bible stories. It means so many things about redemption and forgiveness and tragedy and death. Jordan Peterson could give a 4 hour lecture just on this story. And he wouldn’t scratch the surface.

  • If anyone has problems with “contradictions” and such from the Bible a good book is “Bible Contradictions: The attack of Christian scholarship” by Williams. The Bible is a wild book and most people that don’t like it have never actually spent time with it and studied it. It tells things the way they are and doesn’t sugar coat it.

  • I was once told... The bible, especially the Old Testament, has a lot of lessons on what you shouldn't do as much as it has lessons and commandments on what you should do. Also, slavery among the Israelites was heavily regulated. And was very rarely a lifetime condition/commitment.

  • In the new testament, Paul talks about why the law of Moses was so severe in the past. In my words I'll explain. The law was like the parents and the people were like children. The children were under strict rule and slaves of their parents until they were old enough to go out on their own and be free. The law was harsh so that people would learn how truly sinful they were and so they'd know how God saw their sin. Once humanity was old enough (when the law started to be written in their hearts, to some extent), Christ came to set them free by fulfilling the law in himself. Some of humanity was essentially sent out on their own to be free from the strictness and penalty of the law (as far as what God requires of our behavior and the consequences of it). People who don't understand the Bible are obviously going to look at these things in different ways. That's why it's important to learn as much about something before you make strong opinions about it. The Dunning-Kruger effect is a cognitive bias in which people with limited competence in a particular domain overestimate their abilities (or knowledge).

  • Important part of King David's story is that he really was caught up. He was out of place not where he was supposed to be. His men were fighting in his name but he was posted up in the rear. The prophet told David a story about two neighbors. The story made King David burn with anger to the point that King David said this neighbor must die. The moment King David realized he was the villain in the story he repented and Yahweh could feel his hurt and repentance. As a result he lost that child he tried to cover and his house was cursed. "THE SWORD WILL REMAIN IN YOUR HOUSE" They are fighting today as you read this.
