2025 Toyota Camry: Basic need not be terrible & boring

2024 ж. 23 Сәу.

MotoMan has a surprising experience behind the wheel of the heavily revised for 2025 @toyotausa Camry: It’s shockingly good - but not in the ways one would expect. How? In reinventing the @TOYOTAglobal Camry, Toyota has blown a hole in ‘the average price for a new car nowadays is $50,000’ logic . . .

    • @@MotoManTV agreed the eCVT differentiation doesn't apply here as it is in fact still a continuously variable transmission and it drives as such. Doesn't matter if it's more reliable than a regular cvt or that it has planetary gears instead of belts and cones and pulleys.. It still drones and doesn't feel particularly engaging. You're not wrong.. buy hey it is the best application for fuel economy and its a hybrid so it's a no brainer.

  • Whether you like this car or not, the truth of the matter is that this car gets great mileage, is known to be reliable, has great features that are standard and rides well for a midsize car and starts at well below then most new vehicles out there now. Because of this, it doesn't matter if there are haters of Toyota or Toyota hybrid, they make the best hybrid and they are reliable and they will sell like hotcakes.

  • I like how your shirt matches the interior. 😎 Toyota Camry. It's perfectly fine as it is. Been getting ppl from A to B and back again over and over, reliably for decades. That's why the masses buy these, including me. I don't want more car, I want less, but at this size. I'd rather invest any extra money as opposed to spend it on a tech pkg or bigger engine.

  • We need wagons to come back. Suv's are essentially lifted wagons so making a wagon version of Camry offers the same practicality just closer to the ground with a lower C of G. The trunks on sedans are just not practical enough now.

    • While I am of the same opinion, Americans are overwhelmingly getting fatter and receiving leg problems and SUV/CUV's higher seat height is more comfortable. That's what also cops say about Ford Explorer vs old Crown Vics.

    • I've never had issues with sedan trunk capacity, and now that the salt is off the road I regularly use my Miata as a runabout. Fit a cooler, 2 folding chairs, towels, and 2 travel bags in there last weekend, which is more than what most of the Escalades and CR-v's will load into their trunks at the grocery store this morning. I can count 2 times in the past 3 years where my Mazda3 hatchback was actually used to carry more than my 2nd gen Mazda3 sedan, and neither time was critical. (1) I bought a lawnmower and I did need the full opening with the seats folded down to fit the box inside (although if I took everything out of the box it would have fit in the sedan). (2) It saved me exactly 114 miles (one back and forth) when I moved from my last apartment to the new one (or I could have rented a truck and done it all in one go). The other 1094 days and 7.5 hours it's made no difference, except it being less efficient than the sedan. I know if I can help it I'll never pay extra for unused space, especially if it hurts driving dynamics. Once people start thinking with their wallet they might take a good look at all the empty space in their truck and realize where the savings are. I'm looking forward to loading up for a full memorial day weekend BBQ in a vehicle that cost half as much at purchase and at the pump as what other people think they need. And way more fun.

    • Another aspect of SUV purchase is the perceived crash safety arms race. I hate SUVs and pickup trucks as a common mode of transport. When they hit people, people's bodies don't go over the roof like a low hood car. Rather their bodies go under the wheel, risking more serious injury or death. The hoods are so high, you can only see the thirteenth kid sitting single file in front. But ask any common person, even me, I'd reply that I'd rather be inside a SUV than not.

Here in europe there´s only the option of the hybrid either in the camry or the rav4, and they are somehow perfect for a buyer who wants somewhat nice transportation and no worries in years to come. In fact, that´s incredibly appealing for a lot of people. That last comment about not getting in debt for a car.... spot on.

  • It is not just an Atkinson cycle engine. When you put your foot down the variable cam's immediately switch off the Atkinson mode to provide more power. Also the injection immediately switches from port injection to direct injection. One will notice the engine then sounds very different and a lot more pleasant. Consider the support from the electric engines and the car has almost infinite driving modes. Very nice piece of technology. When driven at ease the infamous eCVT howl is not noticeable.

If I wanted to go for Accord, I would choose the one that had the 2.0 Turbo engine. 2024 Honda Accord has a nice looking dashboard though, but exterior doesn't look exciting. And instead of these complex hybrids with so many moving parts and electronics , why not go for simpler BEVs with lesser parts to worry about ? Why cant companies invest in battery tech, make them more energy dense, increase charging speed, that way we don't need large batteries and heavy cars

Most manufacturers are discontinuing sedan production due to a rapidly declining market demand. 10-15 years ago this car would be awesome. It’s an suv world! Most folks would feel embarrassed or old driving this around which is too bad. 😢 Definitely beats the all new Accord. Excellent car review! ✅

  • You don't get it. Basic is the polar opposite of hybrid technology. A small motor, motor inverter, boat anchor Li-ion battery and 100 computers to connect to ICE for power modulation exist for one reason only. Profit for automakers. Electric systems fail with age like clockwork. Hybrid systems which exact a premium price at purchase, exact a larger price owning one out of warranty when automakers derive a windfall by selling proprietary hybrid replacement parts if you can find a mechanic smart enough to root cause inevitable failure. The customer will have no idea if they are 'taken for a ride' as mechanics use part replacement for their diagnosis strategy. If you don't understand the rudimentary tenant of greater part complexity aka a hybrid with 2.5 x's the part complexity of gas car only, go to engineering school where all the math will bring it into focus. Statistics 101. The public doesn't have a clue. More? Listen to real car guys, not all the liars on youtube who don't know the difference between a motor inverter and battery BMS. Listen to Mike aka Street Speed's review of the new Eray which is a joke. Chief Engineer Tadge Juechter of the C8 who is soon retiring didn't even buy an Eray as his swan song retirement gift to himself because he knows, and he could even get somebody to work on it and parts free for life. He bought a standard Stingray with his own money. Needless parts and weight added for complexity and profit. Everybody lies about the new Eray and says how good it is. If you own one 5-7 years from now, you won''t be able to give one away as it goes out of warranty, complete with fake sound track. Egregious how much disinformation is put out on the web. Why? Because youtubers are given cars by manufacturers for fake reviews. Advertising. Selling out of America.

    • While I agree with some of the points here, when you specifically look at Toyota’s history of hybrids from the early 2000’s and still see them on the road, it counters your arguments. ALL vehicles from the 2000’s and on (and really, before this timeframe too) have electronics that can and will fail. Yes, you’re adding complexity with the electric motors, the 55lb Lithium Ion battery and all the subsystems to make it work. But you’re living under a rock if you don’t think pure ICE vehicles don’t have an insane amount of electronic sensors, modules and computers controlling their subsystems too. Some are worse than others. But let’s pick on European cars with their 48v subsystems controlling their mild hybrid startup systems, controlling RWS module and their sway bars. Despite being ICE powered, those systems will fail too. I am the original owner of a 2006 Mk5 GTI with 170k on it. Guess what? I’ve had to replace sensors on it too and it’s a manual ICE powered car. The point I’m trying to make is, unless you’re buying a carbureted car from the 60’s or 70’s or earlier, electronics can and will eventually fail on every car type. From my track record of having owned a 2015 Mazda3 for 4 years/55k and that car saw the dealership for a ebrake mechanism recall in its time with me, and now a 2018 ND1 Miata, JDM cars see the dealership MUCH less than German cars. The GTI never let me down, but it was always in the dealership in the first couple of years. I personally feel Toyota has got the 9th gen Camry right for the most part. The color matched grill on the XSE is tacky though. But for low to mid 30’s, what more can you ask for?

A fully loaded 2025 Camry XSE Hybrid FWD MSRP of $41,647 and my 2023 Camry XSE V6 fully loaded MSRP of $41,305. I just priced out a full loaded Camry XSE Hybrid FWD on Toyotas’ website, and it comes out to $39,870 including delivery. About $1,777 cheaper than what you mentioned, hence the “uninformed” label I gave you! Also, the new Camry DESTROYS your gas guzzling V6 with regards to fuel economy! The new Camry also has a nicer, higher quality interior compared to your Camry. The ONLY thing your Camry has over the 2025 model, is speed! The new Camry has above average power/performance for 98% of buyers. A high 6 seconds 0-60 is plenty quick. All while getting 45-50 mpg. And the new Camry might just pull on your V6 in the midrange with the instant torque from the electric motors. So just stop with the nonsense. 🤦🏻‍♂️

    • with the inevitable switch to a full hybrid or ev lineup, manufacturers aren't left with much of a choice given adding geared transmissions to a semi-electric powertrain seems to add complexity & cost. hyundai/kia has the 6spd dual clutch in their hybrids to give customers a more traditional feel, but its reliability isn't equal to toyota's e-cvt setup. honda programs their e-cvts to mimic a 10-spd transmission, but it still doesn't sound 'natural' enough to warrant the feature in the first place. a traditional e-cvt, using no gears but instead electric motors to convert power from the gas engine, seems to be the best option we have for now.
