Why Ojukwu declared the Republic of Biafra in 1967
On May 30, 1967, the military governor of Eastern Nigeria, Lieutenant-Colonel Chukwuemeka Odumegwu Ojukwu proclaimed that “the territory and Region known as Eastern Nigeria, together with her continental shelves and territorial waters, shall henceforth be an independent sovereign state of the name and title, The Republic of Biafra."
Ojukwu had four days before, on May 26, 1967, addressed the East’s Consultative Assembly consisting of some 300 delegates from all provinces in the East. He had declared that “there is no power in this country or in all Black Africa that would be able to subdue us by force”. It was left to the Assembly, Ojukwu continued, to choose one of the three alternatives:
• Accepting the terms of the North and Gowon and thereby submitting to the domination of the North,
• Continuing the present stalemate and drift, or
• Ensuring the survival of our people by asserting our autonomy.
The assembly got the message. For whatever it was worth, it gave Ojukwu the powers and urged him to declare at an early practicable date Eastern Nigeria as a free, sovereign, and independent state by the name and title of the Republic of Biafra, which he did on May 30, 1967. #HistoryVille #Biafra

General Johnson Ironsi was a good man and soldier, who was not given the time to do his work, by the vandals Federal troops. But Gowon sabotaged the Aburi Peace Accord, that caused the war. The Cross River State people were not known then as CRS people, but were at first known as South Eastern State. Blame Gowon, it should be for the war.

Ironsis actions of failing to punish the January 1966 coup plotters was a big mistake. Further it was Ironsi who forced the civilian govt to give him power. That was a coup Ironsi didn't need to take power and should have allowed the Northern and Eastern people to choose their own leaders.

Whereas the story teller appeared to have knowledge about Nigeria of 1966 to 1970 she missed a vital point which would have made the story more accurate. What she didn't talk about is the terms of agreement that brought the whole region together as a (Federal republic of Nigeria) you see before Nigeria became Nigeria, the regions brought their terms which one of the terms written in the eastern constitutional agreement is what was tampered with and both ironsi and ojuku was trying to restore through coup and aburi accord. The result of that northern one nigerianism is oil, port operations, land and government seizure to the detriment of all except the caliphate.

Gowon falsely announced that peace had returned to normal, that the Igbo refugees from the north should go back to their normal business, while OJUKWU cauterized and asked IGBOS in the north to return to the east with immediate effect, but before the Igbo could come back, the northerner had closed all the roads to east and IGBOS were all massacred in a cold blood. Ojukwu from the get go (from Ironsi’s time) was single minded on domination and control of Nigeria by Ibos and when that failed with Ironsi’s ouster, secession. Every step, every decision that Ojukwu took was in sneaky furtherance of his goal of secession after that of control and domination by Ibos of Nigeria failed with Ironsi’s ouster.

It is funny how Igbos want to ignore the reality as to what caused the war. It starts with the January 1966 coup an Igbo led coup. Ironside then takes over power from an elected civilian government instead of allowing the West and the North replace their assassinated leaders. Ironside then fails to punish his fellow Igbo assassin's. Short of splitting Nigeria Gowon did everything possible to accommodate the East instead the East came up with new demands. The West had no problem with the presence of Northern troops and don't understand why the East would care. The West readily accepted the creation of more states, yet the East refused to accept and it was one of their initial demands. The East brought war upon itself and should blame itself for what it under went.

Ojukwu's quest for power led to the problem. His personal malice for Gowon led him to declare himself as leader of of the Eastern Nigeria. He had it all worked before Aburi. No it was not known as Cross River State, but it was known as South Eastern State. It later in the towards the end of the 1970s, became known as the Cross River State.

The Regional Government, however how imperfect it was, under the 1st Republic, in my humble opinion, should have been left to grow at it's own pace. That Igbo Coup should never have been conceived let alone carried out with all of its biases that left Michael Okpara and Zik alive subtlely. That Coup became the basis for every coup we have experienced that sowed the seed for the madness called Civilian Government that even commenced by the same War Lords in Civilian Agbada. Today, the country has become a complete shadow of herself when nations have moved on. So, Ojukwu had no reason to secede when his own ethnicity started the madness that led to the Igbo massacre in the North by the aggrieved Northerners whose leaders were already taken out by the Coup. The War on both sides was a crime against humanity. It's been many many years after and we have not learnt anything as a country.
