I've compiled a reading list of my favourite history books via the Amazon influencer program. If you do choose to purchase any of these incredible sources of information then Amazon will send me a tiny fraction of the earnings (as long as you do it through the link) (this means more and better content in the future) I'll keep adding to and updating the list as time goes on:-

  • Phew. 3 and a half hours long. 3 years in the making. 30 locations visited. 100 sources used. 15 hours upload time. Delighted to finally have this out there. I’ll sort out a detailed bibliography and list of sources I used once I have recovered my mind a little... cheers all. Don’t forget to like and comment if you enjoyed this vid as it helps the algorithm to make it worthwhile and makes more projects like this one possible in the future. If you enjoyed it consider subscribing for 100+ other vids I’ve already made plus tons more epics in the future. Hopefully soon I should be able to travel overseas again and widen the focus out a bit from Britain once again!! Cheers for watching. Catch y’all next time.

  • I studied History, Archaeology, Celtic Civilisation and Classical Civilisation at the University of Glasgow, with a lot of focus on the transitions from Late Antiquity through to the High Middle Ages, and did a course that covered the Welsh poetry covered here, and several on the Anglo-Saxon world. all under some of the leading scholars in these fields. I can say with some authority then, that this is a colossal work for one person to achieve. Even knitting these threads together into a coherent written narrative would be a massive challenge, let alone single-handedly producing a 3 and a half hour film that even someone with a casual interest could enjoy.. The scale and scope of such a tale is enormous and exceptionally difficult to understand, and yet you have made it easily digestible. I will recommend this video as a starting point for anyone wishing to understand the "Dark Ages", and indeed for any scholar of the period to enjoy. Wonderful, wonderful piece of work. Bravo!

  • When Simon Schama's 'History of Britain' series was released on the BBC at the start of the Millennium it was hailed as a major TV event. In his series he goes from the fall of Roman Britain to the age of Alfred the Great in about two minutes. Now, for free, around 20 years later we can watch a documentary that's over three hours long just about that same era that Schama brushed over in a few short paragraphs. That's truly amazing. You taught me *everything*. I seriously barely knew *any* of this - and I spent a huge part of my history major on emphasizing in Medieval Studies. I took at least one course on Britain in Late Antiquity/Early Middle Ages, attended countless lectures, and read who knows how many books, and you blinded me with an entire course (or more) of material that was entirely new to me. What you set out to do with this documentary was a superhuman effort, and you did it with flawless style.

The Romans were an amazing, practical, and efficient civilization, and yet faded and ended. I have just followed on your British Roman history post with this in one hit which gave me about five hours watching (it's OK, I have a sleep disorder and am insomniac) and have genuinely loved every second of it. Apart from the undoubtedly excellent historical content concerning a period which fascinates me, I love your cinematographic skills, if I may call them that. Presumably stock footage of a candle being blown out, flames and sparks rising, and the crucifix against the sun etc. coupled with entirely appropriate music just makes the entire piece so atmospheric. If you tell me you took all those images yourself then I think I shall form a fan club in your honour! I know you mentioned in commentary that the alleged "dark ages" are something of a favourite of yours so I am off for a trawl now to find something else. Another sleepless night awaits.

    • @Orbán Viktor Mihály There is so much history that most will never hear of or understand. I thought the Dark Ages were called such because there weren't many historians and not much was known. Knowing now that it was literally dark for generations because of whatever nature threw at the human race; volcanoes, meteors, plagues and incomprehensible weather conditions. This is an amazing body of work. I'm delighted to know more of the land where I was born in post-war Britain at Burderop Park R.A.F., Swindon. Growing up in West Texas I learned the history of these lands and not much besides the history of the European settlers. Not much of the history of those peoples that came here and made a new civilization. Thank you for the knowledge. I understand a little more of the ancients and what is left of those early Christian cultures.

The mythos, the presentation, the era, the wonder, the speculation, the imagining, the simple truth that entire worlds (however small) can be lost or altered by the stroke of a pen is somewhat maddening & riveting. Adding the fact that you’re doing this entirely independently is truly remarkable; wholly deserving of praise for your hard work and dedication. You are clearly a gifted individual and whether this comment is ever seen or not, I wish to extend my personal thanks for making this accessible; entirely free. To those of us who are fascinated by history and interested in learning it is itself quite a generous gift. 🍻

    • @@WaydeRobson Yes, the Romano-British who became the Welsh and the Hen Ogledd spoke Old Welsh and Cumbric respectively. These languages were descended from the pre-Roman Brithonic Celtic language, along with Cornish and Breton. It's why Southern Scotland has some Welshy sounding names, as it was part of the Hen Ogledd. I think the Picts spoke Brithonic to.

    • Its something like 535 536 and 538 there was frosts in July in tree rings in Europe. The collapse of the Bronze Age was something similar but on a much longer scale, in Babylonian texts they say 18 years without a summer, with scientists then taking sediment readings and they showed it was a 300 year period of significant cooling. The reason the Eurasian genepool is so small is because for 40,000 years we have been subject to the most extreme climate shifts where it has thinned the numbers to such an extent that only the strongest and most gifted people survived. After each cooling event and massive death rates it presses the reset button on what the world was like before allowing people with no standing to rise up in society. This makes way for new ideas and inventions and this constant cycle of destruction and rebuilding the world new again is what turned Eurasians into the most successful people on the planet. Previous to the Bronze Age collapse iron had been used for centuries before in jewellery so it wasnt like they had not discovered iron previous to the collapse, but the collapse of civilizations that traded tin on order to make bronze and the breakdown of the trade networks ended the Bronze Age in the Med and Middle East which forced them to start making weapons out of iron. Iron then lead to steel, but would we have ever made steel if we never had this collapse in the first place...

    • References to Ragnarok from the Sagas------Gylfaginning chapter Chapter 51 provides a detailed account of Ragnarök interspersed with various quotes from Völuspá, while chapters 52 and 53 describe the aftermath of these events. In Chapter 51, High states that the first sign of Ragnarök will be Fimbulwinter, during which time three winters will arrive without a summer, and the sun will be useless. High details that, prior to these winters, three earlier winters will have occurred, marked with great battles throughout the world. During this time, greed will cause brothers to kill brothers, and fathers and sons will suffer from the collapse of kinship bonds. High then quotes stanza 45 of Völuspá. Next, High describes that the wolf will swallow the sun, then his brother will swallow the moon, and mankind will consider the occurrence as a great disaster resulting in much ruin. The stars will disappear. The earth and mountains will shake so violently that the trees will come loose from the soil, the mountains will topple, and all restraints will break, causing Fenrir to break free from his bonds.

    • Going "Viking" (verb) is like going "pirating" the term "Viking" is too generic. Most werent pirates, they just wanted wealth and land. Their actions made them that though. "Viking" is an action not a title. from what i have gathered from reading anyway. they werent "vikings" they went "Viking" which gave them the title "Vikings" which is an insult not a badge of honor. Its like calling jack sparrow a pirate when.. he really wasnt.
