Every hard hit warrants a fight now apparently and if you don't, you get this. (and yes I know Rempe went over the line last game, but that happened after the Devils designated fighter tried to fight him, so that wasn't the reason and that dude wasn't even on the Devils that long at that point)

  • Canadian here, started playing hockey when I was 4. When I was in 12th grade I was the co-captain of our high school soccer team. The other co-captain and I were having a major on going disagreement about the team that finally boiled over and mid practice the 2 of us walked to the middle of the pitch and we agreed it was time to settle this thing. I looked at him and just said "hockey code" and he agreed. We wailed on each other for about a minute, felt like 20, and he went down and I stopped. He got up offered his hand and said "okay we do it your way". We finished practice and I offered him a drive home, which he took. I'm 56 now, we still go for beers when we're in the same town. If you're a Canadian the Hockey culture bubbles over into everything else.

    • I'd love elaboration on... well... any of those points lol. I don't necessarily think it's a terrible thing that should be outlawed... but I don't see any good arguments for why, other than: we've always done it so we should get to keep doing it. Good for the game: then why is it only allowed in the men's game, and only at the top level Good for the fans: huh? Good for the players: I can understand this one the most, but it's still not convincing Makes the game SAFER: you're really gonna have to explain that one to me, cuz that's a pretty whacky take.

    • @@jsidkfncjfdldld honestly... solid point lol

      @happysqWid@happysqWidАй бұрын
    • @@happysqWid 1. Women's Hockey: Has no fighting because that is how it was developed. It also has virtually no hitting/checking. It's the trajectory the women's game took, which is different from the men's. They're essentially two different styles of the same sport. The women's players simply don't want fighting, but they have discussed more hitting, which is already evident in the PWHL. 2. Junior/IIHF/NCAA hockey: For Junior and NCAA Hockey, there is no fighting (fights occasionally do happen, however) for a couple reasons: The obvious one most would point out is concerns about the players being young and having a developing brain. While true, a major reason is that these leagues are significantly less physical than the NHL, which means less necessity to fight (more on this later). The latter is also true for the IIHF, but the IIHF also is largely European, and European hockey developed MUCH differently than North American Hockey. Just because most non-North American Men's leagues are different is not a reason that the NHL should homogenize. The leagues developed differently, like two geographically separated species, creating unique ways to play the game which has only served to grow and evolve the game. It should also be noted that fighting is NOT only at the top level in North America (NHL), but it is also allowed in the AHL and the ECHL. 3. Good for the fans: Obviously, fans love to see a fight. It's entertainment, but true hockey fans also like to see their team's players stand up for each other and answer the bell (agree to fight if they made a dirty hit/play) and they, the fans, respect the opposing team for doing the same. The players respect it, too, which is why you'll often see two players tap each other on the helmets post-fight. 4: Good for the game/players/and safety: Simply put, fighting makes the game safer. Why? It provides players an outlet to police themselves. There are many unwritten rules for fighting. Both for when to fight and how to fight. It's dirty, for example, to swing on a player while he's on the ground. When someone falls down, the fight is usually over. Further, the refs miss A LOT of calls in the NHL--it's a fast, incredibly physical game and there is some level of incompetence--meaning a lot of dirty plays/hits. The NHL is much more physical than other men's pro hockey leagues. This inherently leads to dirty hits, which can be missed by the refs, which can lead to retaliation. Fighting allows players to de-escalate this. If a ref missed a dirty hit, and no one fought, that would lead to a retaliatory dirty and dangerous hit--that's a reality of the game. Fighting allows a controlled environment where two players can settle their differences, and the teams can move on. Often times, after a fight, you'll notice fewer dirty hits in the game as the fight puts the player's emotions back on track (it sparked both teams). It also protects skilled players. Why did no one hit Gretzky? Because he had enforcers who ensured his safety. So, again, Fighting and physical play protect players, especially star players. 6. There are bad fights/bad reasons to fight: These are in the minority, but they happen. Players fighting after an opposing player made a clean hit. Players fighting too often--this is not a major problem as even the league's "Heavyweights" (Deslauriers, Reaves, MacDermid, Foligno, etc.) only fight a handful of times a year. The problem exists with players like Rempe who has fought more than anyone in an incredibly short amount of time, but he is a major outlier right now, which is why he draws a ton of media attention. I agree these issues should be addressed, but the solution is not "No fighting," as that would lead to more dangerous hits. 7. If fighting makes the game safer, why is there less of it?: As stated, fighting is a way for players to police themselves, especially after uncalled dirty hits. Dirty hits, especially uncalled hits to the head, slashing, etc., were much more common in the early 90s to 2010s as players often got away with it or received little in the way of suspension. After that, the NHL cracked down on this and started making it a point to call major and minor penalties on hits to the head and other dirty plays, increased suspensions and fines for these actions, and , before all this, introduced a second referee in the late 90s to help keep track of things as the game is so fast-paced. 8. Culture: You said you don't see any good argument for why, other than: "We've always done it so we should keep doing it." Besides my points above, I never understood why people discredit this opinion. It is part of the culture of hockey. It's part of what makes the sport unique, and it has always been a key component of North American hockey. Why people are so eager to remove something from a culture they barely understand is distressing. As Bill Burr said, "We want to take the fighting out of hockey but not out of boxing?" It's a part of the game. There's a reason to it, there's an art to it, and players and true fans understand the need for its existence. There's a lot more I could write about each point, and I'm sure some contradictions I need to clean up, but I have frankly spent too much time on this post. Respectfully, do some research (The Code by Ross Bernstein is a good book for this) into the topic that isn't exclusively from people who isolate fights as fights are PART of the game not an isolated incident within the game.

    • No it’s epitome of cooler heads prevail. That’s literally the cliche play by play guy thing to say as the refs break it up and they voluntarily stop fighting. A good hockey game took place after this whereas you’d have to cancel the whole basketball game because the benches would have cleared.

  • I'm all for hockey fights as long as they aren't constant. If it turns into more fights than hockey I have a problem with it. A fight every now and then is alright, but not every single game.

    @freeforall825@freeforall825Ай бұрын
    • then hockey isn't for you buddy players will always take cheap shots and they will always pay the price for those cheap shots. Just watch a video about "the code" and will all make sense and by the end you'd probably say "...huh, they should do this every sport"

  • I’ve been watching Hockey for 50 years. If you take fighting out of the game, you’re gonna take me out of the game. They don’t fight just to fight. There’s a reason why they fight. That’s why every game doesn’t have a fight. Hockey is the greatest sport ever And I really hope America wakes up and realizes that these players give 150% every second on the ice. You can’t say that about every sport

  • Reminded of the Redwings, Avalanche fights of the late 90’s which to this day are the best… but as a hockey purist myself I don’t see how you can say fighting is not apart of the game? It has literally been in the game since the NHL’s inception in 1917 then even loosened it some when it expanded into the United States in 1924.

  • Absolutely nailed it, and I am a Cdn. that played hockey from the 60's to the 80's. Old time hockey--if you want to take a cheap shot, you better expect to throw down. If you can't fight, you better have skills. Today's hockey, rats like the Bruin's captan, can take cheap shots without retribution.
