    • Nowadays, most people will defend by going belly down or turtle, instead of going to guard. It is a more energy efficient way to defend (compared to guard), and very hard for the top person to attack if they only have a few seconds to work. Groundwork is a very small part of men's judo. Elite male judo-ka are so strong and explosive that for most of them, their best chance of scoring is with a throw from standing. Every now and then you see an athlete who relies on newaza as a primary method of scoring, but it's rare at the elite level. It's mostly used as a secondary attack (to catch a tired or careless opponent off guard), or as a way to stall (if the top player is up on the score cards). Women's judo is different from men's. Because women are not as explosive, it is relatively harder for them to score on their feet. Therefore, it is common for female athletes to have superior groundwork skills, and to be more willing to use newaza as a primary method of scoring. Ronda Rousey is a perfect example of newaza skills in women's judo; she had lightning fast armbars that she could hit in transition, and she had plenty of setups for it.
