Farmers champion "right to repair" laws

In some cases, American farmers aren't able to or allowed to repair the equipment they own. Right to repair laws are aiming to change that - and may have other implications. Barry Peterson has more.

  • Lee Iacocca said that he wanted to deliberately phase out the home maintenance auto mechanic. He and other top execs realized that if they made engines difficult to work on with tools that ONLY their factory mechanics were allowed to own they could make more money by guaranteeing that the car's owner HAD to go back to the dealer for repairs. The idea spread to tractors and computers and so on.

  • These lawsuits are VERY important. Car, Computer, Cell Phone, and Appliance manufacturers are all lining up to claim their products and software are proprietary. And that YOU must only allow one of their certified technicians to repair your device/equipment... because YOU do not actually own the equipment or device. So, YOU do not have the right to repair. Also, YOU must pay a monthly subscription for software updates.

  • This is something that a lot of people would like to do. I complain all the time about having to replace things because they are made of plastic and it just does not last like things used to. Being able to take things to a repair guy like we used to when I was a kid would make more sense than throwing it out and getting a new one. I use my cell phone until it can no longer be upgraded with downloads, and the company makes me get a new one because there is no room.

  • "In the past, America thrived on self-sufficiency. When something broke, we fixed it-a testament to our resilience and resourcefulness. However, today, our ability to repair is hindered by a paywall, and it's time to address this issue. We advocate for the Right to Repair, emphasizing not just the right to repair but also the right to access the knowledge necessary for it. In a landscape where devices are intentionally programmed to fail, and shoddy designs encourage constant replacements, it's crucial to reclaim our independence. We aim to extend the lifespan of our machines, fostering a culture where old things can be kept running at their best. Access to codes and information is paramount. Whether it's our cars, trucks, tractors, planes, drones, or phones, Americans should have the right to fix what's broken. By doing so, we break free from the cycle of forced consumption and contribute to a sustainable, self-reliant society. Let's champion the Right to Repair and uphold our freedom to maintain and preserve, just as a free country should."

  • 1. Farmers started it, but the Plague of "you'll own nothing and like it" has spread FAR beyond farm equipment. Cell phones, electronic devices of all kinds, and even Car manufactures are ALL looking for and inventing ways to prevent independent repair form happening. Purposefully putting in software roadblocks so that even if you DO replace the hardware part, the Software Sees its different, and doesn't allow that new part to function until you Pay the manufacture to "allow" it to work. Ironically, i dont think the farmers RTR would have gained nearly as much momentum if Apple hadn't stuck their nose in, siding with John Deere to Block it. 2. Dont be fooled with Apple "urging" a right to repair bill. Something Stinks about that, and we are obviously missing something. There is a loophole, some massive catch that we are not seeing that Apple put into the California bill that we have yet to be aware of. Otherwise they would STILL be fighting against it. There is no way having a completely consumer side RTR bill will benefit Apples bottom line. 3. 2:37 This is all corporate lies from JD. None of that crap is true and they have been at the forefront on PREVENTING farmers from repairing their equipment with Software lockouts. They do NOT provide the tools needed (in most cases, the software diagnostics and programs to enable replacement equipment to work). They are lying though their teeth.
