can you make one for beds called the morning wood?
to the top
you are going places, my friend
would need taller side boxes to accommodate more *ahem "clearance" underneath...
or a hole, which you should obviously make very large ( ͡° ͜ʖ ͡°)
Whatever is most comfortable for your right hand...
0:00 Of course it's uncomfortable, it's a piece of shit of a so called Gaming Chair.
r/titlegore
muiecopyright gaming chairs can be comfortable... I dont use one personally, I use a kinda expensive office chair
but it says cloud 9 on it !! 1 ! ! !
which chair do you recommend
+420apache657 comfortable office chair unless u have 8k super wide screen racing sim then get a "gaming" chair
You forgot to mention that you have to lift a 30 pound lapdesk with a glass of water and expensive electronics on it every time you need to get up. It's basically a jail.
2:30 - Danger! Please don't use the table saw like that again, with the offcut trapped between the blade and fence - it WILL catch you out one day... if your blade doesn't tilt the other way, you should flip the piece over and cut it upside down.
Agreed, this is so dangerous!
I had to watch that part again, I was like wait did that just happen, talk about an insurance nightmare, I'm surprised Linus isn't on the blatant disregard for personal safety. I mean if you don't know how to safely use a table saw, google it, pretty sure every guide will say that the piece you are planning to keep should be between the blade and the fence. Also that cut should have been made on a miter saw.
maddoctor99 quit your whining. if he shops off his hand , it's his fault .
Mario - learn how to use a table saw and then you'll understand. Or give it a go and see what happens.
Butter Finger - you think that's whining? Do a KZhead search for 'table saw accident' - people whine when they lose a few fingers or a hand.
Here's another DIY couch gaming platform: 1) Get an Xbox 360/1 or PS4 wireless controller (left up to preference) 2) Get steam or comparable game launcher in big picture mode 3) Use coffee table for phone and water (drink also left up to preference) 4) Play games comfortably while sitting back on your couch and not having an unwieldy rig on your lap, just like god intended 5) ??? 6) Install RGB lighting
Davos Seaworth Shooters are the only games that play better with a mouse and keyboard (with the exception of RTS and titles like sim city), and that's only if you play suuuuuper competitively. IMO, shooters are a lot more fun casually with a controller (like BF or COD or casual CSGO), because you can just lean back and relax while you play, but games where 1v1s are veryyy important like competitive CSGO or Rainbow 6 siege, you would be better off with a mouse… but tbh if you mostly play shooters, you'd be better off closer to a monitor anyway.
Davos Seaworth lol tell that to the people playing blackops 3 on pc. They whine at me for using a controller because apparently it's an unfair advantage xD
No one is going to attempt playing competitive shooters (at least at a decent skill level) from a couch on a giant ass laggy 50" TV.
That is a lie, mouse and keyboard is superior for any game that requires accuracy and very quick movement/reactions (or a shit ton of keys like MMORPGs). A controller, however, does work for a majority of games.
TrueDPS A controller is more fun and comfortable as well
This is the Linus that I really miss, nothing crazy expensive or stupid for the sake of youtube. Just a brilliant idea to DIY your way to a custom game rest at a good value with really clear cut instructions, materials almost anyone can get, and nothing that a 13 year old kid with his dad couldn't build over a weekend.
Also, would it hurt to do a collab with an actual woodworker?
Curtis Millar Amen. Carpentry work in these videos is horrendous. There has to be a master carpenter living on every street in Canada.. seriously.
Probably one of the reasons is to show that even the average gamer, who usually doesn't have woodworking skills (except maybe wanking), can achieve an acceptable result using easily reproducible techniques (glueing shit instead of dovetail)
Francesco Zaffaroni sure, but an experienced woodworker would have foresight, they would also know how to achieve a robust and well made solution by properly applying the basic techniques anyone could use without going into anything too advanced
lol at the "wanking" joke. It's not about having tools, or reproducing easy results, it's about having smart designs. This design has a 1/4" thick sheet of plywood as it's connecting point in between two heavier boxes. That thing is gonna bend after max 10 uses and possibly snap after a few months of use. All the peripherals are retrofitted, so nothing will work other than what it's designed for and what it already fits. You can use cheap materials, minimal tools and still make something that's clever and also strong, you just need to have the know-how, which is what an actual carpenter would get you. That being said, I'm all for learning and experimenting, but publishing it on the internet as an actual solution is probably not good given the design faults.
So that we end up with a video that is fuck-all-useless to the majority of the audience? Hell, the table saw made me wonder how many folks watching this video have one of those bad boys in their garage? If I want that shit I'll go to different videos - here I appreciate the liberal use of wood glue.
I love the effort LTT puts into their videos. You can clearly see that they've got through a lot of thinking and writing, just to create the intro for this video where most other tech KZheadrs wouldn't even have bothered. This is why LTT will always be my favourite tech channel!
Linus you should have palm sanded the wood with an 80 grit sand paper first. then apply the stain, one coat is all that's needed (don't forget to wipe off the stain after about 10-15 minutes). Then apply three or more coats of a polyurethane with some light sanding in between (use 150 grit sand paper and use the same piece for all your coats). I use a professional grade oil based polyurethane called Fabulon which is made in Canada (best oil based poly on the market). Just find a local hardwood refinishing supply store or sometimes paint stores carry Fabulon. I refinish hardwood flooring professionally so I know my shit ;)
Was gonna say he didn't even sand the thing before staining.
Wayne Maher But it looks fine?
he didnt even built it himself
Indeed. Stained wood should have a smooth, polished surface.
Never forget to wipe
why didn't you make it rest on the sofa?
Harry8642 Surname? Exactly what I'm thinking! just make the cable boxes taller
Rev_dude yeah I am going to make one of these soon (not because of Linus) and I don't see why would wouldn't...
Joshua just do magnets or Velcro.
***** yeah or have slots in the wood.
I'd probably rig up a way to be able to slide the keyboard from side to side as well so it's not locked to just one position. I know myself depending on when I'm typing or using my mouse for gaming, I'll move the keyboard to suit.
It's already so large, unwieldy, and bending in the middle- why not just have the sides extend down further to rest on the sofa as opposed to supporting the whole thing in the middle on your thighs with a thin piece of wood, and putting all the weight beside your thighs and having them dropp down.....
Exactly what i was thinking. The sides carry most of the weight and they don't even have their own supporting. I was waiting for them to break. You don't even have to be an engineer to see that...This video is fucking cringe.
I AGREE - Its ridiculous
Hahahaha you hit the nail on the head
4473021 Why not attach a table to a sofa.
Gordon Ramsay might as well just get one of those stands to eat breakfast on your bed with.
Man this is the type of LTT stuff I miss here in 2019.. LTT make more of this please!!
what you have created linus, is called a desk :P
That's just a desk on your lap...
Mastrhix It's a crappy idea is what it is
Yeah it is and it's going to be a disaster if you are in a hurry to use the restroom or get up quickly for an emergency.
What? It's 2017 and no RGB. Disliked
Nano Mine That's definitely an RGB K65. Source: I own one, and the previous, single colored LED version doesn't have clear casing on the switches, which this one does, and it used light grey aluminum instead of black, as the one in the video does.
What? It's [insert current year] and [insert relevant topic]. Disliked.
Irrelevant Topic*
Nano Mine hahahahahahah funny
Love the freedom you get on a couch? Well constrict yourself with this huge piece of wood that goes over your lap so you literally cannot move without tipping over the table and literally all of the food and expensive toys you put on it.
Hum and how do you remove it for like going to the bathroom or something ?
Someone that's exactly what I was thinking 😂
Yeah I was like wtf xD
Someone adult diapers
Someone you dont, just cut a hole in your couch and put a bucket in there
SlenderSmurf (λ)³ looks like it would snap in the middle if you picked it up incorrectly.
Anybody else not even remotely interested in this, but let the video play though entirely just to support Linus?
Dino Prašo nope
Dino Prašo no
Dino Prašo think he makes enough money for you to not watch videos you arent interested in
I'm not a brain washed fanboy though, so no.
Dino Prašo no
What happens if you're really needing to use the toilet
Ion Use a bottle.
Go for the wireless model?
Cartman had this covered in the "Make Love not Warcraft" episode.
You could close the boxes on the bottom and use them for "storage" Nice avatar btw.
Cut a hole in the sofa LOLOLOL
The best thing about this is that you can customize the design for any peripheral that you personally have, phone and cup holders included. And this would be a great project to do with Mom, Dad, Sis, Bro or a friend.
or, you know, you could use a console. Attack me, PC master race, attack me.
Richik Sinha Choudhury not gonna attack you but I prefer PC so I think I'll stick to this. Except mine doesn't look like it would come apart if you tried to use it
I like to be completely responsible for my own ability in my aim. Not having auto-aim on like a pansy and not fumbling around with a joystick trying to pinpoint something.
Richik Sinha Choudhury Or you know, attach a controller to the PC. it's not hard.
KB/M is the way to go. If consoles supported KB/M, I wouldn't be so against consoles.
Richik Sinha Choudhury Just see my account image.
Why not just put a table in front of your couch..?
Wouldn't work very well. Tables is at a weird angle / to low to lay back in the sofa.
try it and find out yourself
THANK YOU!
Yeah, it doesn't look very sturdy but don't worry. We can rebuild it. We have the technology. We can make it better than it was. Better... Sturdier... Comfier.
that's what i did
This is easily the best content put out by LTT in a long time ! Hope to see more DIY content like this in the future.
I glued a piece of acrylic to the bottom of an extended mousepad for $9 and glued neodymium magnets to prevent my keyboard from sliding but still detachable. I even glued little raceways for cables on the back
A few suggestions, - Use strong magnets for placing the frame for the items, this lets you adjust where they are located if your not happy with them. - Letting the two sides rest on the couch (since your taking up 80% of the couch anyways) is probably going to be more comfortable. - I'm sure there is a way to let the two sides fold into the middle, I'm no carpenter but it probably isn't that difficult. This would allow it to be more portable and easier to tuck away somewhere.
Step one. Get a controller ye dummy
Step two: throw the controller out of the window cause it's shit.
FinPS - Cod Videos controller for PC shooters? Hell no.
FinPS - Cod Videos Same. Although I don't get cramps that bad. But I don't like to get them at all.
MrGhost370 Controllers doesn't have aim assist. It's the game that offered it. Go research about aim assist and even search it in games.
Hey LMG I really liked this video. I can see this as something I would be interested in and a couple tweaks I feel like DIY is the way to go at this point! Well done LMG!
the lighting on the wood work sections is fantastic
Idk how much more fun-size you can get than Linus
You know it's a Linus video when it's starts with "Are you a slave?" You all got trolled into liking this comment, it was me all along
And You sold Organs on the black market, Shameful
I had to check back and it does start like that.... goddamit Linus
Best comment bro
Linus has like 10 slaves that make his videos for him
and then just talks trash about them lol and says he joking
i made a table that lets me raise or lower with a handle and also has a slide out mini table that can pivot down or level with a notched bar so your keyboard wont move on ya and slides so whenever you want to get up just push it in. i had to design this table because i reposition myself a lot if im sitting in one spot for hours
The reveal of the same "Couch Wood" made me laugh really hard. Thank you 😂
Doesn't look compact and comfortable
For the same money you buy a ps4 or xb1 controller and it has a free included option called movement freedom.
Or a steam controller if you wanna play an RTS or TBS
Stoney_Eagle Why tf would you want to move while gaming other than leaning to a side when you are playing a race game or move around while you're raging?
Axrhyy213 do you not go to the bathroom
clam jams Yes, just that I'm not stupid enough to hold it to the point I'm almost peeing myself/shitting myself
But using a mouse is kinda better for many games, especially for FPS.
This is actually quite good for the Version 1.0 CustomCouch. I do have all tools and machinaries to make this one, wood is very cheap and is quite strong so thumbs UP! Just to give some feed back, i was trying to buy a "Gaming Couch" for a while but never got anything i liked, this project has potential because we don't have much money, but do wanna be confort while gaming for hours.
Great effort. I think a hospital overbed table is easier to mod and literally roll away when you gotta stand up. Prices range from $40-$150 for a more stable steel frame construction.
The World's Ugliest Couch Gaming Platform
mann I love your sandals
Linus, great video. I know making it yourself you can customize it for personal use. Just a thought for version 2.0. Under the box sections create a "tv tray" type setup and add casters to the bottom. Maybe an adjustable height mechanism since not everyone is same height. This would make moving it off your lap a bit easier/safer without spilling your snacks. Great concept, but hope you never get any knocks at the door because it will take you awhile to get up to answer the door. lol.
You could also use a spray adhesive for the mouse pad. Use a router around the edges to smooth it out. Also would look better if the wood around the keyboard was shorter. Velcro a fabric cozy to the table. That way if you don't like the location, just move the velcro.
How are you supposed to get out?!?!?
Derek Pickett Good question.....I guess that he'll live like that for the rest of his life. And doing adverts like that and begging for someone to help him.
Derek Pickett can't you just put it down?
Put it on the floor.....
Put it down on the floor. May be potentionally dangerous if you have a glass of liquid on your DIY surface.
You dont
Its 2017 and no rgb??? Must be terrible!
Please let Tyler wrote all of LTT Scripts from now on, and Linus please don't make him change his style
Really fantastic, I've been looking for this since I was like 19. Excellent tutorial man
Please keep Tyler on the scripts. Great job, Tyler! I literally laughed out loud in real life.
Aw this is sad to look back on.
So, and where are your friends sitting? Oh right, a gamer with that dedication has no friends, i forgot. :D
This is a pretty cool project and I've already come up with some new design improvements if I can get my shit together enough to get started on it lol. good vid.
I recently moved back to my parents house to wait out covid 19, and only brought my laptop with me. Due to a lack of comfortable, private working spots I decided to setup on a recliner in the basement and just ran a wooden shelf across the arm rests. I would have bought a lapdog v2, but modding it to hold a laptop instead of a keyboard seemed like more work than it was worth
The only thing that looks good in this video is the TunnelBear VPN advertisement.
hahahah true i was thinking the same
Uses the chairs he tries to sell to us on a regular basis as his "uncomfortable desk chair" Hope your advertisers liked this video.
this gives me a few ideas, thamks
Perfect Now for my new Gaming Setup.
It's a good thing you all overlooked a carpenter in your recent hiring spree.
Its a table, Linus. You build a table.
More DIY stuff it's awesome!
Love the DIY videos. Keep them coming
this is an appropriate thumbnail.
I need a larger couch for this thing
you could make one out of plywood and add wrist wrests for cushions
Chris V weissssss
I appreciate that this video has a cinematic 1080p24. Well done LTT, well done.
awsome video nice editing, rly liked the backround music u used
Linus... are you serious? no offense but this looks like a cut up grandfather clock.
Speaking of DIY.... FRESH BOOKS!
Decently thick piece of cardboard big enough for mouse and keyboard. works pretty good and saves you lots of money and time. may not work for you but works great for me
Love the music after the intro.
you should build a mini PC inside the sides of it.
0:26 linus could sell his balls. He doesn't use them anyway.
lol
wan show crew
These videos are getting more and more entertaining..
looks a fun project
Linus has many talents. DIY is not one of them
i have never seen someone sit bolt upright on a sofa...
an ironing board works well. height adjustable and it folds away. try it.
Now you just need to build the coffee table frame that fits that semi-portable desk top for when you are not gaming. Of course, the standard gaming products axiom of compact/portable/convenient vs high quality/competitive vs cheap ---> Pick TWO still seems to apply especially in regards to couch gaming as this isn't very compact but preferable to a console controller IMO.
0:49 That PC Rig terrifies me.
Lol.
japzone why?
Pssssh I've been using a 4 foot wide piece of wood with a mouse and keyboard for years!
I really like that you're doing that much DIY stuff :D
I use a similar construct in bed for my laptop. It doesn't rest on me, but rather has two legs. Made from medium quality wood it looks great.(You really should use some real wood or hard-wood for this). The problem is, that its so comfortable, that I haven't used my desktop pc since.....
rip, I cross my legs
Phoenix left leg ontop of right leg.
the worst pain in crossing legs comes from my leg's blood flow being stopped, not my balls
Step 1: remove legs from desk Step 2: place desk top on lap
I have a home made racing simulator frame with a removable top. I also made height extensions for a wooden coffee table I have. All I do is remove my wheel deck from my racing rig, which has a very comfortable laid back F1 style driving position, and lift the coffee table and place it on the height extensions either side of the rig, and voila! Super comfortable gaming set up for the lounge (Yes I'm lucky to have a wife who lets me keep and use a full racing rig in the lounge :D )
Or you could just use a controller
Frosty while that's what I would do, some people just prefer keyboard and mouse that much
I'd prefer controller over that thing.
You forgot to glue the keyboard and your mouse to the platform as well.
I only have a 2 seater couch so I am going to modify it removing the left hand side. I have a coffee table beside me anyways. Thanks for the inspiration!
Pro tips, you can add an old 15 inch screen with a touch screen glass and controller framed into the wood, you have to add space under the screen for cooling, but then you have a secondary screen that can act as remote, browser etc while you game.
or just use a controller... k I'm kidding
Drilled through the mousepad? *eye twitch*
I literally just shortened the legs on a table that was the right size and i put my pc screen on it too. I do have a pull out sofa so a little easier. But this is 9000% more effort than it needs to be. Holy necro.
This was really cool and a much more doable project for a poor college student than something like the desk PC (which was still awesome) great job LMG!
DIY 21 inch gaming laptop next please.
Nah. 30 inch!
I'm also thinking they could build a 0 inch laptop, you just need to plug in a HMD. it'll look more like a commodore 64
jlebrech what the fuck is an hmd
head mounted device, aka oculus or vive
all this lacks is an easy way to stand up...
I personally use a Steam Controller and cheap wireless keyboard. The SC has most of the functions I need in games and on the desktop and the wireless keyboard is for when the SC can't be used; for example, when a Windows popup asks for Admin permission and the controller is blocked (which I guess is for security reasons).
Good project, I want to build one. if I ever do ill throw some pics on the build online
I wanted to see Linus some how get out from under it without anyone helping him, haha.
On a couch? Fuck that I game in bed
maybe even build yourself a portable roller top too using caster wheels and almost like a rolling TV Tray but one that will support this bad boy, that way if you want to get up you can just roll it away or if you want a more intimate gaming experience you can bring your Gaming Platform to your lap and then roll away the stand. And for the pros a folding, rolling stand using rails almost like a folding table. That would be sweet.
Linus - after spending some time yesterday setting up a pc for proper PC couch gaming - you should do an "end to end" setup with all the peripheral options and software, hardware etc.. you could use / want depending on what your looking for.... Like what software to use if your using a controller only that sorts and manages your games - startup options setup etc.. All in one wireless keyboard mouse combos. TV options - surround sound options, proper viewing distances - game setup, windows setup working with TVs etc.. - There's a lot of content here imho
0:25 That make sense now.. Your balls for a keyboard..
Or you can, just, dunno use a controller?
bestFreemaneva aka Rogue Freeman not for FPS
Blasphemy!
I am still impressed with your ability to mess up staining. How do you stain one piece of wood well, and a piece right next to it looks like you just accidentally sneezed some stain on it? Do you not own sandpaper? Poly coating?
I think getting 2 file cabinets and a picnic table would be just as good. Plus I think I will add a stove and fridge for snacking. My couch is pretty big, should be able to handle it.
"Smaller than Average Gnomes" Keemstar will not tolerating this Linus You will be on Dramaalert
Gnomes - 1. (in folklore) one of a species of diminutive beings, usually described as shriveled little old men, that inhabit the interior of the earth and act as guardians of its treasures; troll. Examples - KEEMSTAR,
