"Welcome to Berlin Motherf*cker!" | Derby Days Berlin | 1. FC Union Berlin v Hertha BSC
Deutsche Untertitel verfügbar.
English and German subtitles available
In a city that has experienced the highs and lows of humanity from centuries of war and conflict to decades of cabaret and culture, the only thing it hasn’t seen, is a top flight derby. Well, at least not for forty years.
Until now.
Off the back of our insane trip to Superclåsico in Buenos Aires, Derby Days is back for season 5 and this time it's all about "The Wait". The intense rivalries between clubs from England to Germany to Italy that haven’t met for 7, 8 even 13 years. What happens to a rivalry when there’s an absence of meetings? Is it a case of absence makes the heart grow fonder or is the rivalry even more heated thanks to the anxious wait?
In Episode 2 we head to Berlin, as for the very first time in Bundesliga 1, the city’s big club Hertha Berlin, based in the West, take on the rising force of the East, Union Berlin. Just like the city, the two clubs share a contradicting, complex and storied relationship, unlike any other in world football. As a result this meeting always promised to be a special occasion both on and off the pitch. It certainly delivered.
A special thank you to Harris, Mike, Will, Anna, Steve, Uli, Micha and Daniel at HBSC, Hannes and Robert at Union, Olly, Barbara, Endi, Charlie, Daniela at the DFL, Roy and Gabe, Phillip, Mo & Peji at the courtyard Marriot and in particular Carim and Jacob. This film wouldn't be what it is without you!

This is not a documentary about a football rivalry. This is a documentary about a city through the lense of football and I mean this in the best way possible.
Indeed, I wish they extended the one about the Hamburg derby this much
Totally agree, but to be honest : It's an artificial derby for marketing reasons. If someone listened to the history part closely, and complete it with historic times before the GDR/Soviet led dictatorship, Berlin has no rival culture against other parts of the city. Frankfurt or Cologne are the same. Union fans tend to be more ready to fight, as they actively fought against the East German fascist surveillance state 30 years ago, what is remarkable, and kept that spirit. Hertha is much more saturated. So if someone dislikes the city of Berlin, you need to know, that West Berlin is not similar and comparable to (old) West Germany, and just because you were born in East doesn't mean that you are lazy.
@@schwulerbaumgermane6249 "East German fascist surveillance state " you say..... i could have sworn East Germany with its STASI police and survailance was thanks to the communists (Fascism went out of business in 1945 in case you somehow forgot about ww2)
@@dannythomson5239 Fascism and Socialism are more close than Socialism and Nazism, but when it comes to the general meaning: Roosevelts social-democratic super state, military government and communism are the same, with democracies less brutal.
@@schwulerbaumgermane6249 agreed. i think we could also both agree communist socialism may sound good in theory but when put into practice it becomes particularly oppressive toward the people it is supposed to work for (thanks to human nature i.e. ambition and greed).
At this point, this is like 15% football documentary and 85% cultural documentary. And it's fucking AWESOME.
I wonder how long they did edit it after completing filming it...must have been ages
It’s great. It shows football is part of the culture.

I‘m a german and I can‘t believe what I’ am currently watching. It‘s literally marvelous how precisely do you analyze the historical and political background of this city and you generate a special atmosphere which is appropiate for this football culture in germany. I would definively say a german TV show wouldn‘t produce such a good video that contains all relevant aspects and is also quite powerful. Also viele Grüße aus dem Norden von Deutschland, weiter so!
Unterschreibe ich genau so.
Indeed, it's insane.. the first five minutes serves as the PERFECT summary of Berlin culture and history. It's absolutely crazy how well made this is.
Stimmt, so oder ähnlich wollte ich es auch schreiben. Top job haben die gemacht, wohlgemerkt für nen KZheadr, anstatt nem hochbezahlten Öffi
Yeah. As a Berliner, I'd say it was quite to the point and accurate. The quality is comparable to the huge budget documentaries on Netflix. One note for that English Berliner though: even though he looked very self-assured, Döner Kebap wasn't invented in Berlin. Döner has been made in Turkey for centuries and Kebap is like the general name for the Turkish dishes. What was invented in Berlin is putting the Döner in bread only, which was an invention to adapt to the hectic city life in which people don't have much time to eat or just eat "on the way - Unterwegs". This coming from a Turk, who has made quite some research on the subject :D
@@tolga9388 I agree with your reference to the quality being similar to a Netflix documentary. But a documentary about football doesn't need all that Netflix money thrown at it. It just needs passionate fans who know their history to speak as part of it.
How is this not a Netflix series?! This is a far better series then almost everything I’ve watched! Well done Eli Mengem, fantastic presenter clearly backed up by an amazing research team.

This may be the best episode of Derby Days. While this derby hasn't had a long standing tradition like most derbies covered in the series it serves as documentary about Berlin's history as well as its diverse football landscape in lower divisions. Tremendous work!
I agree fully with your comment. Hertha won the derby today 3-1 btw. This city stays blue & white!
I thought the Hamburg-Derby was great video of german Derbys, but this is perfect. The music, the camera, the editing, the interview partners (great to see harris again), etc. Good Job.

This is probably the best football documentary I've ever watched, I have just had a history lesson, so well put together by all involved. The English guy wearing glasses would be the perfect tour guide, his knowledge of Berlins history, music, politics, culture and football is very impressive. This deserves awards as some of the other comments correctly say too. Thank you, really enjoyed that.
More than 3 years later we don't have a Berlin derby anymore... but this time Union is playing in the CL while Hertha was relegated... unbelievable! xD
This series honest to god is the best series on KZhead right now. The level of creativity from these guys is epic. Keep up the good work!!!!
As a Brit, I love Berlin. Such an amazing city. Having been twice the one thing I’m yet to do there is watch a football match. I took home a Hertha shirt from my first visit so they would be the team I would go to watch if I went, but I respect Union all the same.
Go to a big game like BVB or Bayern vs Hertha, the Olympia Stadium is so huge that it is not always sold out.
I love Britains

Been to Berlin twice as a Scot. Went to Hertha Berlin vs Werder Bremen, good game great atomsphere but all my Berliner friends talk about is Unions atomsphere. Go to an Union game as it's a smaller stadium with more real berlin fans.
No respect for Urine!

The moment I heard Union Berlin was promoted last season. The first thing I thought was you guys covering The Berlin Derby
It's so sad that Bayern did play at this stadium but in front of no fans. That must've been heart breaking.

From Berlin, couldn’t agree more. Great research, insane effort. Deserves way more attention
After 8 Minutes of watching this, I have to say, this truly is a masterpiece!

One of the best videos or documantaries about the current footballscene. Thank you all for the hard work that must had going into this vid. It‘s nice to see you people how you‘re actual interested in the story behind this derby without painting it all black or white. Thanks for showing all the grey tones.
2000: Hertha played in the 2nd Group Stage of the Champions League while Union were champions of the Regionalliga Nordost. 2023: Union about to play their maiden season in the Champions League while Hertha are in the 2. Bundesliga. This funny old game of ours, I love it 😁
That's wild they both gave the FIFA analogy lol 39:05
Amazing
A lot of the similar lines are probably very shoehorned in. They probably had leading questions that were edited out to get similar answers . I'm not saying it's a bad thing. It's just good documentary rules. But not every interview is going to be unscripted.
Now this video I can hardly wait for. I am starting to take much more notice of Union Berlin cause they seem like they have a soul still despite being in top flight football. And that is just so rare to see in these days.
Thats why so much people in Berlin doesnt like Union. Union wants to present theirselves as a unique club, as a "workersclub". So many people find it so annoying
@@snssssns409 See that statement is not really true. It's mostly the media portraying us that way. We don't care about that though, we just wanna support our team and enjoy good football.
Thats the reason why Union is so hated. They always betray themselves to be this "cool and alternative" club. And they can't stop talking about how they build their own stadium for example even though 99% who brag about it didn't do anything. When Union were in the second/ third league they weren't special at all. Hertha is the real club in Berlin.

This is absolutely amazing. Thank you for putting this out
Derby Days are some of the best docs on KZhead, but this one just raised the bar to unbelievable heights. This is absolutely world class stuff and should have every kind of award thrown after it! I'm sad to see that the younger supporters are leaning into a hateful rivalry rather than a friendly one, because there is already so much tension and hate in football. Just imagine how beautiful it could've been if both Herta and Union stayed up in the Bundesliga with a friendly rivalry where they met as friends, despite being in a city that has been divided for so many decades!
i am 62 and i hate union
i am a hertha fan and 62 its not just the younger generation who hates them
I don't hate Union. I'm 50. I'm somewhere in the middle of it. I had good chats with a bit of back and forth friendly banter with Union Fans ( the only unsympathetic fans were some of the younger fans online and a young female fan in the S-Bahn who acted like Herthafans were worthless peasants and Union is a superior Club who looks down on Hertha (that was in a time where both clubs played 1.Liga). And both clubs had to deal with problems. Union in the GDR as the red headed stepchild of the GDR and being held down by Stasi General (?) Erich Mielke in favor of his favorite club BFC Dynamo, Hertha in recent years for being the Big City Club and having an Investor. Sometimes it was just outright unfair being labeled as the Great Big Bad and Union as the lily white hero when it wasn't all black and white, rather grey. That's the reason why I don't hate Union, but I'm also not totally fond of them.
The camera work in the Derby Days episodes is just amazing.
An incredible video perfectly portraying how how a city such as Berlin is steeped in football and history in a beautiful / crazy symbiotic way, I love these videos man!
