An adaptation of the award-winning book about one very special gorilla, Disney’s “The One and Only Ivan” is an unforgettable tale about the beauty of friendship, the power of visualization and the significance of the place one calls home. Ivan is a 400-pound silverback gorilla who shares a communal habitat in a suburban shopping mall with Stella the elephant, Bob the dog, and various other animals. He has few memories of the jungle where he was captured, but when a baby elephant named Ruby arrives, it touches something deep within him. Ruby is recently separated from her family in the wild, which causes him to question his life, where he comes from and where he ultimately wants to be. The heartwarming adventure, which comes to the screen in an impressive hybrid of live-action and CGI, is based on Katherine Applegate’s bestselling book, which won numerous awards upon its publication in 2013, including the Newbery Medal.
The film stars: Sam Rockwell as the voice of Ivan; Angelina Jolie as the voice of Stella; Danny DeVito as the voice of Bob the dog; Helen Mirren as the voice of Snickers the poodle; Brooklynn Prince as the voice of Ruby; Ramon Rodriquez as the mall employee George; Ariana Greenblatt as George’s daughter Julia; Chaka Khan as the voice of Henrietta the chicken; Mike White as the voice of Frankie the seal; Ron Funches as the voice of Murphy the rabbit; Phillipa Soo as the voice of Thelma the parrot; and Bryan Cranston as Mack, the mall’s owner. “The One and Only Ivan” is directed by Thea Sharrock from a screenplay by Mike White based on Applegate’s book and is produced by the late Allison Shearmur, Angelina Jolie and Brigham Taylor. Sue Baden-Powell and Thea Sharrock serve as executive producers.

    • It was indeed inspired by a true story about a gorilla named Ivan who was captured from the wild as a baby and brought to live with humans. For the first few years of his life he lived with his owners, but he soon grew too big for a human house and they moved him to a 40' x 40' concrete enclosure on display to the public at the B&I shopping center in Tacoma, Washington, where he spent the next 27 years of his life.

When I was a kid we would go to the B&I to see Ivan once in a while. I remember watching his handler light a cigarette and give it to Ivan. He would smoke the entire thing in 2 drags and motion for another. They made him quit smoking in the early 90s, he always seemed depressed after that.

  • "Inspired by an incredible TRUE STORY"? The only thing true about this was that there was a gorilla raised by humans. The real story was that he was raised by humans, got too big, basically sold to a shopping mall and put on display for 20+ years, and was then transferred to a zoo because people realized that the shopping mall was no place for a silverback gorilla. He does not paint freedom, does not get free, and is not part of a freaking circus. You can advertise it as "Based on the best selling book" but don't try to lie and claim that this is anywhere close to a True Story.

  • This was based on a true story for people who didn't know. Ivan was a real silver back that was rescued from poachers when he was a baby. A family took him in and looked after him and cared for him for many years and made sure he was safe, and that's when he actually started learning how to paint. But then he was soon then held captive in a shopping mall and hadn't been outside for more than 20 years straight. Luckily people saved him and put him in a safe environment where he would not be harmed in any way and was there with other silverbacks, so he did end up having a happy ending. So this was based on a true story, but some is made up. I tried to explain it as much as I could, but it does tell some of the real story at the end of the movie.

    • I "knew" the real Ivan. I used to go see him at the B&I "Circus Store" in Tacoma Washington when I was a kid. The B&I was a fun place to go because it had a merry go round and an arcade and animals on display and stuff but it was always a little cheesy. The owners of the B&I raised Ivan like a child for as long as they could before he got too big. He was in a little cage that was an old style circus wagon at first. I felt sorry for him, it was really sad. There were stairs up to a platform you went up on to see him. There was thick lexan with bars in front of it. One time my brother was making faces at Ivan ( he didn't like it if you showed your teeth). My brother had his hands on the bars in front of the lexan. Ivan got mad and jumped up and slammed the window which flexed just enough to pinch my brothers fingers. I laughed at how Ivan had gotten even with my brother for teasing him, it was so funny! Later they moved Ivan to a much larger enclosure where he could go outside when the weather was good. Ivan was HUGE! His fingers were like bananas. He was immensely powerful. They had a swing for him made out of a piece of steel pipe hanging from chains welded to the ends. Strong enough to hold up a 400 lb gorilla but Ivan took that pipe and bent it into a "U". They had it displayed on a wall. Ivan liked to smoke cigarettes, one of his keepers confessed to sharing smokes with Ivan. I was glad when Ivan went to Atlanta and he got to live in a much nicer place with other gorillas even though I missed seeing him because I tell you what, he was quite a sight. There is a statue of Ivan at the Point Defiance zoo in Tacoma now.

  • The strip mall Ivan was on display at for years was the 🐝 & 👁 (2 letters) in Tacoma Wa. I used to go and see him often when I was a little girl. As I child I didnt understand how cruel and inhumane his reality was just how magical it was to see such a magnificent creature. They are memories I'll treasure forever though looking back its bittersweet. I hope Disney doesn't commit their classic crime of retelling the dark secrets of history into a fun, family friendly, feel good fairytale (Pocahontas anyone?)
