In this episode, Aaron and his brothers start the rebuild process on the WRX 5MT they picked up. They tear it down and go over how specific components work while also discussing what parts need replacing and how to go about it!
This was the first time any of them had opened up a Subaru gearbox and they figure things out as they go without looking at any diagrams.

Since we shot this, I’ve picked up another trans with a blown 3rd gear that I can use for parts, and my uncle has a big shop press that I can use to pull gears and bearings off the shafts and reinstall everything! I don’t plan on using this transmission in the near future, so It’ll probably be until october or so before I actually get around to rebuilding it.
I hope you enjoyed this episode, I sure had a fun time tearing into it. Transmissions are about the only thing i haven’t dealt with. Its usually simpler to just find a replacement trans and swap it in. I’ve always been intimidated by transmissions just because they have so many moving parts and everyone says you need specialty tools to work on them. Its really liberating to finally get over that fear and realize its just another component!

Great detailed video bro. You helped me so much to put back together and rebuild my own tranny in my garage. You saved me 1,000s of dollars bro. Its pretty easy to do with the help of this video going back and fourth to make sure its back together perfect.
I appreciate the video, fellas! Did a 6mt swap on the Outback, and needed a little encouragement on the teardown of the old 5mt. This will become a rear wheel drive trans for later projects!
cool for looking into the case but damn, for a minute there it was like two grey aliens exploring their first human cadaver 😂 poke poke 👽👾
lol
Thanks for the video, helped me pull my centre diff to weld it
+PowellMoore have run with the RWD!
@@Dirtcheapdaily is there a part 2?
When caveman first discovered things come apart.. 😲
Great video!!!!
Solid video, thanks
Any update on this? Would love to see some progression :)
Awesooome
Do I own a Subaru? Nope. Will I always support? Yup.
+Slim Sensei what do you drive? I'm looking to expand my horizons for a future project.
Good info. Do you know if 2009 forester manual trans is compatible with other models transmissions?
Hey I did that shit today…… did not take the duration of this video. More cussing and yelling then anything lmao 😂 btw great video guys 👍
I got subaru legacy 99 2.5 A/T I'm not sure what's wrong with it the I disconnected the rear axles and the front axles are jamed and no reverse nor drive, my question is would it be the transmission or the Center differential and I noticed the front tries or larger than the back tries
Would I need to do for my 5 speed? I got a Impreza l wagon from 1997 and sometimes it sounds like a 3rd is bogging down and it’s not always smooth to get on or off power. I don’t beat on my car but am restoring a beat car along the way of learning standard
Where's part 2, man!?! My LGT transmission is starting to grind going into second gear. I'm trying to figure out what to do for a transmission. It's my DD; I've found plenty of low mileage JDM Legacy turbo transmissions and some WRX ones but I can't decide whether I want to buy one of those (since I'd have to swap my rear diff as well to match the final drive) or just rebuild my current one. Love your videos!
Hey man if u get a trans with the same final drive u wont have to change ur rear diff.
I wonder if those gears are cast iron or high carbon forged steel? Maybe cast like the crank shafts? Or ductile iron
And in the background, dad is building a Frederic Remington sculpture with a hand-held grinder. Move inside the garage dad.
+WizardOfWhoopee what?
I was mocking the noisy background grinder noise. Remington made all those intricate detailed western sculptures. Good vid though. My 6-speed STI needs brass syncro's if I can brave disassembling the DCCD.
maybe next time you could have a guy jack hammering
3:25 - "This" is not sending power to the front diff. These gearshafts in the rear housing are the two output shafts to the rear, coming from the center diff. It's just not in a straight line, since the crankshaft is supposed to sit a little higher for ground clearance and stuff.. but you figured it instantly, sorry;)
Update on rebuild video? I just bought a 02 WRX trans and 2nd gear is shot, like yours. Thanks for the vid...my first teardown...
+Tyce Ferwerda not too much. I picked up another trans with a blown 3rd. I just haven't had time to swap the good gears onto the good shafts. I'm not in any hurry since I don't have anything for it to go in right now anyway.
I come from truck land and I'm always amazed how small car parts are, those gears look barely bigger than the gears in my motorcycle trans.
Yet they are rated to take 300 horsepower inputs. I'm converting one of these trans to front wheel drive only, to be coupled to a Eco Tec 185 horsepower engine. It will be used in a mid engine, rear wheel drive cart.
the counter shaft pulls straight out, no need to take off any of the selector forks
+Fox Mense yea, I figured that out taking apart my the 2nd one. Haha
Ugh try not to stick screwdrivers in between things to pry pieces off lol
I was talking to my screen saying the same!
Meh, not that big of a deal when you know what you are doing.
@@orion7741 my rule of thumb is to never hammer, or pry with anything harder than the metal I'm working on. I recently got some SUPER hard plastic prybars, scrapers, and chisels, and bro they're worth their weight in gold....
Nice! In the future I want to do this too on my 5mt-Gearbox...and change the helical gears, all 1-5 to a straight-cut Dogbox-Kit...what you think? Can I do this? Press the gears and bearings off the shafts, press straight-gears on, install the forks and build it vise versa, with a proper function after all? :) Whats needed on tools to press the gears off and on?
Ummmm a press???
what's the music for
Could somebody tell me if this applies to a 2015 WRX (non Sti)? Thanks!
Hey I'm looking at buying this 95 Legacy Wagon with the 2.2L H4 is the second gear is out in the transmission as well. I've torn down an engine before but never a transmission is it relatively difficult to rebuild one? I'm not saying I'm the sharpest tool in the shed but I can figure things out pretty easily. Also it's a manual forgot to mention that
Hey man a trans isnt to bad to split the trans but u will need a press and a beRing spliter and puller to build it the bearings are pressed on.
Watching the prying with screw drivers. That hurts lol it’s a good way to ruin a mating surface lol
You can always resurface 😂
Que the grinder ... Dumbbell
2018 Who dares open the little boys toy box. Subaru breaks down a lot.. learn a lot from this video. Well done in commenting on everything.👏👏👌.. There's goes Subaru dirty secret.
Hey what kind of subaru do you drive! I used to drive a 2001 Outback and crushed it at 325k miles
Nice high mileage! I have a 2006 WRX at 311k. Still running great and I'm on the original clutch!
If you knock the line up pins out of the tail piece it comes right off with a little tapping, same with the center section.
How difficult is it to remove the transmission? Does the engine have to be removed too, or can it stay in the car?
+jds7777's creations its relatively simple to remove the transmission in a Subaru. You can leave the engine alone. There's 5 bolts that hold the transmission to the engine. One on each corner, and a 5th under the starter. Then it's just removing the axles, driveline, exhaust, and shift linkage. Check out my manual swap series for more specifics! The next episode will be out tomorrow 👍🏻
OK, Thanks!
Best transmission, best engine to work with. Ps: If you’re not Mechanic or know what you are doing, never try to replace timing belt on subaru that have dual cams.
Daniel Montuam knock knock
How do you not have more subs!
" 220, 221 whatever it took! " " 38, 39 whatever it took! " Mainshaft Countershaft Detents One way to learn. The HARD knocks way. But they will do better next time. HOPEFULLY.
Anyone know where to buy parts for this stuff? I pulled my manual trans out of my forester today and can’t seem to find a rebuild kit or anything online. I assume there must be somewhere I can order specific gears? Please help thanks.
PPG makes an upgraded gear set. Otherwise, buy from subaru
Please help i have a 2003 subaru outback i put it in reverse and a puff of smoke came up from the hood and no reverse what happened. thank you
+Robert Mccaffrey have you checked any of the lines or the fluid level? They might be completely unrelated. Need more info to even start diagnosing 👍🏻
Watching the guy with red shirt try and figure out how the center diff, gearset and front wheel output interacted was painfull. Its cool you guys are pulling it apart to see how things work. But if you have no clue, its best not to dribble non-sense while you figure it out.
I have studied the FSM and teardown manual for this transmission very extensively for this transmission as I'm getting ready to document this exact tear down for my own video series, and I was literally yelling at the guy in the red, correcting him on what exactly it does. The gear set outputs to the center diff and those gears he was saying was the center diff are the transfer drive gears. They really should have the FSM while they're doing this. You can't guess when it comes to transmissions.
It’d also be nice, if you’d type out “factory service manual” on a video about how’s while you’re correcting folks. Not that you’re wrong.
that center diff is a one piece design... only the bearing can be removed or replaced
ANYONE HAVE A SOURCE OR VIDEO TO REBUILD A JEBA auto trans?
Does the 6 speed has the same anatomy?
No its very different
Rnt u suposd to use a rubbee mallet
Good ole Mormon boy I bet
Literally did a part 1 and never did part 2 rebuild
I love how the actaully transission section is all of 9 inches long the rest is just poorly designed diff sections. You can tell Fuji heavy industries build Subaru because they would rather make things longer than wider. The transission almost looks like a tractor center section.
Is this going in the outback?
+Walkr B. No. At least not right now, the outback is the wife's DD and she hates stick. I'll either keep it for a future build, or most likely sell it.
Any teardown video on a Subaru automatic transmission? Anyone?anyone?
+didier banegas check my recent uploads. I just uploaded one a couple weeks ago.
this is what happens when u get on a wrx in 1 and bang shift to 2 :)
Who else was rooting for the dog to poop on camera?
Anyone else keep hearing "Ludicrous Speed GOOOOOO!!!!" durring the time lapse? so strange....
I cannot and will not try to knock you kids for learning and wanting to learn hands on.
Hilarious 😂
I guess no part 2 lol
It sounded like rocks. I just roasted 4th. Good times
Do you know if 4th gear is known to go out in the Subaru sti's?
@@ninjafit3275 4th is known to go in the 04 to 06 at around 40 psi, 700 to 850 whp, 600 to 700 wtq and flat foot shifting. It was not the gears fault. But it will go if you build your car to race, and then race it. If you buy an access port for your sti and make 315 to 330 whp your trans is fine. Mine held 500 whp and 470 wtq for 2 years at the drag strip.
@@ninjafit3275 im currently making a video of the rallispec 2nd through 6th rebuild and will be posting it after. I'm going for the stock weight wagon world record.
@@bindabbin6067 thanks for replying that really helps. I just purchased a bone stock 2016 sti which is kinda out of my realm atm because all I was into were Hondas and Acura but have been learning about the Subaru's and asking alot of questions. Seems like you are doing some solid stuff in the Subaru world and you have now just got another subscriber keep up the good work!
@@ninjafit3275 thanks feel free to ask any questions or pm me on nasioc. Twitch_PA
where is part 2
+Evil Industries haven't made it yet. I never had time to finish it up last summer.
@@Dirtcheapdaily Ssssssssooooooooooooooooo.... Part two?
Because they realized you cant rebuild a subaru mt5 with out special skills dah .. idiots thank god num nuts stopped grinding in the back ground . Ahh
@@jamesswanson3231 you DO NOT need special skills or equipment to rebuild the transmission. It is pretty dang simple actually.
do like me, just get a used transmission with low milage, and hope last idiot dident wear out or brake somthing in the gearbox..
make it rwd while the trans is out lol
+njyuphoto that's what I'm doing with the other trans I'm putting in the legacy GT
Having a hard time understanding why you didn’t drain the damm thing lolll
Damn this was hard to watch!!
Right didn't even finish it lol
Hi Aaron, are you still working on Subaru’s? Im wondering if you’d be willing to talk to me about mine. I wrote you on instagram as well! Thanks!
