A lot of people think that the fail point of CVTs is the belt, or the mechanics, but in reality its cooling. A single moving system has to endure all of the heat stress of the drive alone, and early examples struggled to properly managed it. Most CVTs like from Nissan fixed the issue with additional transmission coolers and revised shifting programming, extending the life of the units to be on par with contemporary geared transmissions.

@Eye-it-azz4 ай бұрын
The failure rate, among other less obvious differences. Also, they're saying this is an older design. Recent Toyota CVTs often include a 1-gear automatic that handles launching from a stop, for example. Toyota also has a variation on the CVT that exclusively works on hybrid cars, as it involves an electric motor and no belt. However, the base CVT design typically involves a rubber or metal belt and two pulleys with variable diameter. It didn't take too long for companies to converge on metal belts riding on cones. There's probably some materials science that goes into all of this, too. You want the belt to have a good grip on the cones, but also be able to slide up and down during shifts without scratching things. Some combination of chemistry, surface polish, and geometry has to make this work.

Newest generation of CVTs in Honda and Toyota largely addressed most concerns from consumers such as the lack lf shifting by adding fake gears and adding better software to give you a more direct feel. They still suck compared to a regular 8 speed transmission out from Germany but in the economy vehicles that most consumers buy, they have no clue what driving experience is. Hence, we have tons of boring cars on the road with even "sport" models now with CVTs instead of a manual transmission.

The design is brilliant, and nothing compares as far as MPG's concerned. Now we need aftermarket vendors like GearStar and Tremic to get to work improving the design like they have done for other designs and beef up the weaknesses like the torque handling characteristics. Because like CVT or not, the advantages far outweigh the drawbacks and their the wave of the future. 😊
Classic 😊thank you 👍
Snowmobiles have been using it for years...lol. I bought a dodge caliber that I didn't know about the cvt at the time. Big mistake, I didn't mind the car but not a fan of the cvt at all. I need to feel the transmission shifting. I would have bought the manual if I could do it over. Well I don't think I would have bought a caliber period if I could do it over 😂
I think there’s a hole in your gearbox
It's for extra cooling
No its to demonstrate for the video
Rats did it
U ever heard of sarcasm
🤣🤣🤣@@josuke6131
Good for small engines
Got the coke pinky my guy😂
It’s for bumping curry😂😂😂😂
No, that's the picker flicker 😂
So good the way you demostrate but we in Namibie struggle with parts what do u want if i want part to order
Cvt isvery good gearbox.
Also the same gears used in the 1996 Williams f1 team
Does cvt belt move by pneumatics or is that just for the demonstration and otherwise it’s hydraulically controlled?
Its hydraulics on real CVTs
the CVT gear on corolla is faster than most other CVT on other cars from the same generations, specially from the first to second. my corolla is 2.0 and i have been driving it for 2 years the car still surprises me how fast when you kick down from first to second
You can’t kick down from 1st to 2nd, as 2nd is a higher gear!
It has "D-cvt"..and its toyota only.
Там нет ни первой ни второй передачи! Там одна прямая передача
Это вариатор, там нет передач! Одна передача только
@@davemale0687 there's no 1st 2nd.. its continuous variable ratios, ive been driving a 2017 corolla, over 200k km without issue, even in the manual mode 1st and 2nd vary in the revs vs road speed, it's actually quite cool the way it shifts smoothly and constantly making adjustments between the two cones, it says it's got 7 speeds in manual mode, but its got unlimited choices of positions in the auto, like on the highway in 7th ill be running at 2200rpms, but in auto at the same speed the revs drop to just over idle 1500 or so, it's taken some getting used to the revs dropping while accelerating, but the fuel efficiency is top notch, I drive like 8 hours a day, and rarely ever burn more then a quarter tank, at these current prices about 20 bucks Canadian, as a daily driver I wouldn't trade it for any of my previous cars, with the exception of my 90 Acura Integra, the 5sp in that thing was amazing, but I also got the majority of my tickets in it so..
That is the van Doorne variomatic used in the Daf variomatic.
these gearboxes may not be the quickest ones (like dual clutch ones) but they’re pretty trustablex, like every japanese-developed thing
They are not
@@filiplaskovski9993 Well I mean 285k miles on my 2014 corolla. Does your car have more?
Not the quickest? CVT does not have any gears to shift! Are you one of these damn germans that advocates for dual clutch transmissions? Volkswagon dual clutch is just a waste of money. Its just bad!
@@traderjoes8725It just can't handle torque. Pressing the gas too much only makes the engine scream. The rpm goes up, but it doesn't accelerate that fast. The ride is very comfortable, the engine is quiet with low rpm at high speeds. These are their advantages.
modern ones can handle around 250 ft lbs more than enough for 4 cylinder economy cars.
Toyota hybrids do not use belts, they use 2 motors
How did they get Darth Vader to film it?
Nice
Nice video
Thanks
super cool
This thing is better than honda, break before 100miles
Does this one have a launch gear?
2024 Corola sedan 1.5 M15A-FKS engine. Does anyone know the manufacturer and code number of the CVT transmission used? model grade MZEA11L-DEXDBB
I feel sorry for Nissan there's not many Nissan cars where I'm at and a lot of people go to other dealers except Nissan in the next 10 years they going to go back to automatic transmission just like General Motors decided to put diesels in their cars in 1978 in 1985 they went back to gas this will happen the same way with Nissan
Is it a CiViTi gearbox?
Nowdays most people don't know how to drive cvt transmission car, they just push the pedal until floor mat, first of all need to study how this pulley works,u all can't put full throttle, example waiting at traffic light, the correct way is put D and let the car move first, don't press pedal, after a movement, slowly press the pedal
Beautifully said. That’s exactly what I do with my nimble Nissan; such a smooth ride.
@@garmarrod that's how we maintain this cvt bruh,if we don't care ,then prepare around 2k USD for overhaul or change one set gearbox
@@vinznes7792 exactly. I drive it smooth to keep it smooth.
Wait wait so I should always let it drive itself first before increasing throttle? That makes lots of sense!
CVT on corolla is different
These DO NOT belong in anything other than a Snowmobile.
Many two wheel vehicles use this
Pancho needs to clip that nail
My CVT gear box has a problem in loose of power and taking time to accelerate and some noise too, what can be the problem
Punch power train? First change original cvt oil, nowdays alot fake oil, reset all fault code using odb, still same maybe ur secondary pulley low pressure, have to overhaul the gearbox
The problem is you have a CVT.
the only problem is that u have a CVT!
Slipping belt maybe
Mine did that when it was low on oil. It would get air pockets and both sides open and the belt would get loose and slip. It also had low power at low speeds because it couldn't engage the starter gear without enough oil.
CVT is garbage transmission that same one Nissan using. It's done around 125k to 150k and replacing cost is higher. Don't go for it.
Cvt=continously variable transmission
We know that thanks.
Continuos vulnerable trans
What Toyota is this from? I didn't think any of their CVt's used metal melts or chains. Their eCVTs are just planetary gears and are poorly named.
Corolla hatchback and cross uses CVT in their ICE models
I think you're correct. Toyota doesn't use a belt type CVT but a planetary gearset. Combined with electric drive you can have a CVT-like experience without the drawbacks.
CVT comes standard on the Toyota Corolla. It is the most reliable CVT. The problem is that not every likes CVTs and would prefer a regular automatic tramission
Compared to a traditional auto, the cvt is much more reliable and durable, what people don't like about them is they don't have the accelerating power that you get with a manual, i still would prefer a manual in a sports car, but for a daily delivery car, you can't beat the fuel efficiency of the cvt, not the fastest off the line, but considering it burns fuel at idle(just over)at 80km, and barley breaks 2k rpms at 120km, city driving even when doing deliveries and time is money, my revs are seldom more then 2k, and I drive fast, it's all about throttle control. it suits a purpose very well
@@kevangrogan3689 Good point. There is even a mechanic who prefers a regular automatic transmission. Toyota has perfected it's CVT over the years
as far as I know Toyota hybrids have eCVTs there is no belt in it
Não concordo com a Montadora quando ela recomenda Não trocar o Óleo da Caixa , Mei Amigo trocou e sentiu MUITA DIFERENÇA !!!
This is not a Toyota e-CVT. the Toyota one consists of satellite gear wheels and two electric motors. inform yourself better!
Planetary gear set ?
That nail
What a horrific contraption
nice
Индусы первый раз увидели вариатор 😂
Simultaneously one of humanity best and worst inventions
Won’t touch a CVT if you gave me one. Traditional automatic transmission, standard transmission, or dual clutch for reliability. I will never buy a CVT
Toyota ecvt is built like a tank because of how little moving parts there is to it.
dual-clutch isn't really reliable especially the ones made by Hyundai
CVT technology as improved greatly in the last decade. I have a CVT in my 2010 Subaru with over 200k on it, and it works fine.
What type of maintenance do you do ? How often do you flush the fluid ?
toyota makes the most reliable CVT. Not everyone likes CVTs. It is standard on the Toyota Corolla
ShiftnGGG
i h8 this transmission
They are just cheaply made. Japanese cars are rarely over 300 newton metre of torque. Most of them add electric motor to the wheels to add more power (hybrid). Most sport cars use ZF transmission (german gearbox) or manual.
👍
I don't even want them as gifts, it's rubbish what engineers come up with nowadays...
But toyota can't change this gear box because the engine is better but the gear is very bad
SLUSHBOX
worst transmission ever for a vehicle. Clearly being used so more money can be extracted from the buyer down the road...Should be illegal to put these pieces of garbage into cars.
Lol, not from Toyota my friend.
@innocenthowa7656 do you have a cvt toyota?
Correct 💯 👏 Toyota CVTs suck too
Don’t put short videos on gear box
What’s the difference between this and Nissan’s CVT ? They both look the same to me
The failure rate, among other less obvious differences.
Which one is better, using push belt or chain belt
Neither, go with a manual, or if you must, a regular automatic, CVT sucks
They say the honda CVT. Is good for at least a 100000. And then what you gotta throw in another transmission, they're junk. I have a 2013 Honda. Accoruns great rides nice, but the Trinity's making all kinds of noise. Pay $30000 for a car and then have to worry about throwing a transmission in. I have 200000 on it, but I was hoping to get the 300 thought. This would be my last car, but I guess not. And people on here say, well, you got 200000 out of it. When you pay $30000 I don't mind changing other parts on the car, but not the motor and tranny.
No matter what brand of the CVT is... if you NOT maintain and use it PROPERLY, you will DAMAGE it!!
looks like indian and philipino talking, might be Singapore
Cvt is for 50 kmh bikes

in my 7 years of having an estima cvt i didn’t know the gearbox is connected to the entire crank shaft 💀
Not half of it?

Any way to save money, cvt's are garbage got burnt once 2011 Nissan Cube rebuild cost me $3500 in 2018!
Should have went with toyota, mines still drives like new 7 years 200k km later
Sometimes we get lucky & sometimes we get burnt. Lesson learn.

Toyota was known for it's reliability, but now it has begun to place this crap cvt transmission in it's cars. Toyota has become the same as Nissan. I will never believe in toyota anymore, unless it's an older one.
Nissans use Jatco as their CVT supplier. Toyota CVTs are far superior. Speaking as someone with a 2014 Corolla and 0 issues in 150k miles over 10-years.
O prefer dual clutch gearbox
the best transmission ever ❤
Costly and Very Troublesome
it will last 150k kms max and no spare parts too
As an owner of one, and as much I I don't particularly like it, I'm significantly past "150 km".
For woman
Yes, this transmission designed for 100lb scooters will definitely work in a 3000lb car, great thinking, surely cant see this failing horribly...
Toyotas been producing these since literally 2014 and they don’t seem to have any issues🤷🏽♂️
My 2017 Honda accord has it.. it feels really nice actually. I’ll let you know when it kills itself, though I don’t plan to push it hard everyday.
As long as you change the oil in it they seem to be going quite well.
@@reubensandwich9249 What intervals?
@@traderjoes8725 The service techs I've talked to say 30-40k should be good to change the CVT oil. The problem is that it's an expensive change at $500-600. Both depends on the car and the CVT. I don't think it's too bad because automatics are around 60k for transmission oil changes.

Horrible design it will break down every 25k miles
Newest generation of CVTs in Honda and Toyota largely addressed most concerns from consumers such as the lack lf shifting by adding fake gears and adding better software to give you a more direct feel. They still suck compared to a regular 8 speed transmission out from Germany but in the economy vehicles that most consumers buy, they have no clue what driving experience is. Hence, we have tons of boring cars on the road with even "sport" models now with CVTs instead of a manual transmission.
