How’s this for a hot hatch showdown - new Volkswagen Golf R vs Mercedes-AMG A45 S!
On the face of it, these two cars have a lot of similarities. They’re both hot hatches (obviously), they both have AWD, and they’re both powered by 2-litre turbocharged petrol engines.
However, that’s just about where the similarities end! Starting with the Golf R, it can produce 320hp & 420Nm, while it weighs in at 1,551kg. As for the A45 S, well that can produce 421hp & 500Nm, but it also weighs more than the Golf R, tipping the scales at 1,660kg.
However, there’s one key difference between these hot hatches - the price! While the Golf R costs just over £39,000, the A45 S rolls up with a price tag of over £57,000!!

@@in.m1417 Iwas supposed to buy it. But Dieselgate came around, so they didnt invest in it. Instead i bought a GTI Clubsport MK7 whichs now tuned & modded to Stage 1 @ 370hp /462tq. My tuner have crazy upgrades for it and Golf R & say both should be pushing around 700 hp with that. Now that would be insanely scethy on a FWD car like GTI CS iknow. But thers guys pushing 540hp in it on youtube now with nutty turbo swaps & stuff! 😄 👍

@@praga163 pretty sure you realize that 85hp doesn't explain the difference between the two. Especially since the AWD system will likely have larger losses compared to last gen considering it sends power to the rear wheels differently.

Mat, you must compare the old version of Mercedes a45 with the golf 8 R instead of the a45s, it would be fair compare looking for the HP numbers ✌🏻
@carwow it would be good to see a hatchback remap war, for example the one where you had all the hatchbacks like the fiesta st, polo gti etc but instead with a stage 1 remap and see how each of the remaps changes the car and may get different results

Stage 1 the R, and you've got a tidy motor for under 40K I would take the R, over the Rs3 & 45, as you have plenty of change to add more personal mods, and to make your car more unique 😉
And also no warranty so when something breaks ur fucked.

@Tony Stark . Can’t work out why though . Those basic stats are familiar to any petrol head and whilst the comparative races are great it would be even better , and really easy to produce some bald figures to go with them . He did an impromptu 0-60 on the R a few weeks back in the drag race so obviously aren’t completely adverse to it
Nearly £20k difference yet the Golf still sounds so much better. Not sure how AMG have managed to make such an impressive engine sound so dull.

Considering the huge price difference the Golf R is seriously impressive. In real world driving conditions there’s probably very little in it performance wise. You can buy far nicer used cars for almost 60k, Aston Martin, Porsche 911, Nissan GT-R etc

That Golf R is making way more then advertised thats for sure. The a45 (with 100 more hp supposedly)was barely pulling on it and its only 7% heavier with 31% more power 🤔. Plus it trapped almost 160 in the standing mile. You're not doing that with 320hp at the crank. You'll be lucky to do that with 320 to the wheels.

I test drove the A45S today, it was really nice, feels like a gocart. It stood between that and a used C63S, i realized today that i want the C63S, yes the A45S is really fast but its just not as raw as C63s, Also after 100km/h iits not as explosively fast as i felt the C63S was. And i dont know but you dont feel the speed. i was at 150kmh in the city and i did not feel that i was going that fast. Its way to easy and safe. Also i found out i dont really care about the wide new infotainment displays as much as i thought i would. For me its a used C63S on my buy list. Because 1 its cheaper used 36k euroo vs a45s 68k euro. And 2 i think its way more fun and raw, and more room to tune the engine to 7-800 hp. The sound left ALOT to desire, it sounds extremely nice for a 4 stroke engine believe me but compared to V8 sound its just on an entirely different level. Im just gonna say dont look at youtube videos when deciding what car you want go test drive it and only then will you know, you will see how the power delivery comes, how it feels, even though this one is faster to 100km/h its not the same power delivery at all, C63S is like a wild animal compared to a45s.

I got the vw arteon which have the same engine as the golf r but detuned here in North America to 268. I did an apr ecu flash apr air intake and apr turbo inlet pipe all that cost me 1,500 usd and now my arteon makes 402 on the dyno
