Russians Captured a Leopard 2A6. What Can They Learn From It ??

After getting so close to capturing one, over and over again, Russians actually managed to capture one Leopard 2 tank, more than a year after they'd been delivered to Ukraine, and not just any Leopard 2, but the Leopard 2A6, one of the most advanced Main Battle Tanks out there.

  • The probable reason why the Russian guy mistook the tank for Leopard 2A5 is because the markings inside the hull of Leopard 2A6 tanks still retain Leopard 2A5 labels after the 2A6 upgrade. I was not aware of this, but a friend of mine, Tobias, who used to serve on a Leopard 2A6 in Bundeswehr, pointed this out to me. Picture of the label inside a random Leopard 2A6: imgur.com/a/O25Eu9I

  • Being a German Bundeswehr Veteran of the 23rd Gebirgsjägerbrigade with a whole Family of German Veterans including Eastern Front WW2, i find it hilarious that there are People who thought that if you send any Western Tanks to Ukraine that none of them would be captured and studied. The same Thing happened in all the Wars. The Soviet Russians captured Tiger Tanks, Panzer 3s, Stugs etc. thats just part of War. And we Germans captured all the Soviet Russian Tanks as well and studied them. It's weird to especially see so many Western Journalists be so surprised by this happening. This is just whats gonna happen either way and every Military knows this will happen. Just like Russians are aware Ukraine will capture their Technology. • "There are things they can't manufacture, because their factories are tooled differently." Wow, just for once, someone who gives a statement like this CORRECTLY! Damn, that's RARE! Tooling can always be changed though, so if they see something they do like, they might make it part of the nextgen upgrade for their own vehicles. "There is nothing in that machine that they don't know." Overall, no. But there's probably some details here and there that they do not have the exact measures and composition of previously. So, it's unlikely to provide anything truly useful, but it does have some minor parts that could be interesting to Russia, like the easy maintenance setup, as the Leo2 engineers spent a LOT of effort on those, and it might be a viable improvement to Russian tanks, depending on if it fits their logistics chain of course. Making an improvement that speeds up maintenance by 25%, but also forces you to replace thousands of toolsets in your logicistics chain, is really NOT an improvement.

If they were really building that many new you wouldn't see anything but T-90Ms and T-80BVMs on the front line these days, instead of seeing VDV units using T-54s for assaults. If they had that production capability, they would be putting it into artillery shells and cruise missiles, both of which they are severely constrained in (aside from the NK artillery shells they got).

  • Low-sensitive inert explosives in shells are not used in Russian tanks, since they are many times more expensive than conventional explosives, they are worse in cumulative shells, and the bulk of the shells in Russian tanks come from warehouses from Soviet times, when inert shells were not produced. In any case, the shells in Soviet tanks are open without metallic casings (just like the automatic loader itself is not protected by armor, at least from the crew), and simply the ignition of gunpowder is inevitable and also destroys the tank irrevocably. The use of low-sensitive explosives in shells is expensive, reduces the effectiveness of explosives by one and a half times, reduces the armor penetration of shaped charges, which is not high anyway, and will not provide sufficient protection without other measures - increasing armor, maintaining armor protection for the ammunition from the crew, separating powder charges from explosives , creating knockout panels to allow the gunpowder flame to escape or throwing a burning container of gunpowder out of the tank. Inert explosives have been known for a long time, they are weaker, and they do not protect against damage from cumulative jets or other very harsh shaking - but can only withstand a small fire or impact from fragments - which is not now the main means of destruction - from cumulative jets

  • Most important things won't even be ammo, armor or whatever. It's the really complicated stuff. Engine. Transmission. South Korea is one of the leading countries in the automotive industry and has only recently developed engine and transmission to replace the German RENK and MTU combo in the K2 Black Panther. Tank transmissions are more complicated than one would think. And even though the Leopard 2 transmission is ancient compared to something like the HSWL 256, it's still miles ahead of anything Russia can mass produce. Remember the latest T-90 still can't turn the tracks in opposite directions like western tanks. It's one track stop the other moves, but not both in opposite directions.

  • Rebuilding an enemy tank without spare parts is difficult to do. Hell, it's hard to do it for tanks that have been out of service for over 40 years, let alone trying to rebuild old WW2 tanks. Rebuilding some of those took years. Replacing a random bolt from an engine assembly is very difficult if you have to reverse engineer the bolts size, thread, and hardness.

  • Hi RedEffect. Could you make a video about the T-64 and T-80UD in Russian service before this war and in it. In general it seems that these tanks were removed from service because of parts supply issues, because the factory of these tanks is in Ukraine. But I have read that the LPR and DPR had at the maximum around 400 T-64's, in addition there were videos of T-64's being removed from fields and put on trains, in Russia. About the T-80UD, as far as I know, the tank wasn't confirmed to be present on the front line on the Russian side, but there were claims that they were removing them storage. In addition there is a video, in which was claimed and showed that T-80UD's specifically, were being moved by train. I wasn't able to find more information about them.

  • Very Briefed And Summarized Ideas : Notice that the gun barrel has damage or holes that may indicate that it was hit by shrapnel, usually when the tanks driving inside land mines field it turn the main gun backwards so that it is not affected by the pressure ,shrapnel produced by the continues mines explosion, and I do not know why the Russians want to distort how the tank was damaged into a story that the mobility of the tank was killed by a mine and then its destruction occurred using FPV, in the end: 1- for the Russians to say that they used primitive shoulder launcher to damage a tank in the caliber of the Leopard A5/A6, which led to its abandonment, and its removal from the Ukrainian battle order, is considered a great achievement that exceeds in value the killing of the mobility using mines and then destroying it using loitering ammunition. In the end, the Russian soldiers’ chances while using unguided RPGs to knockout a main battle tank are considered average, especially with the topographical complexities and under the pressure of engagement... 2- In both stories, the tank was disabled using the same HEAT ammunition, so what is the point from attributing the disabling of the tank to land mines instead of first shoot kill especially when using the same ammo's... Let's get to the heart of the matter : what will the Russians benefit from the leopard A6: 1- the overall designing, as the larger size translates into higher protection possiblity and a friendly useing environment for tank crew, the sperate ammunition storage, and the effectiveness of the blowout panel... 2- the fire management system, especially the ballistic computer, while the multi-channel sighting device were catastrophically damaged... 3- the engine which is a weak point in the Soviet and then Russian tanks and engine industries, not only it is possible to reverse engineer the engine and then make the necessary engineering improvements, upgrading and developments to it before launching mass production, especially since Russian diesel powered tanks are using engines whose designs date back to WW2, but the engine of the nasty germans tank is generally characterized by its: easy to perform field maintenance on, lift and replace during, with the electronic inspection and diagnosis feature, without the need to dismantle the engine and examine it mechanically... 4-the efficiency, reliability and the durability of the electrical stabilizing system is one of the most important components in the tank for an advanced modern fire management system, especially for a turret in the size and weight of the leopard tank, but I disagree with you on the part of the cost or price of the Russian electrical stabilizing system (unless its components and devices are cheaper) in the end the system used on the leopard will not be cheaper than its Russian counterpart, and this partly explains the difference in the price of the state of art Russian t90ms, compared to the price of the second hand and obsolete Leopard 2a4, One of the reasons for the differences in prices of the tanks is due to the costs of the components, and here is what can be considered the quantity and quality of the accessories the tank equipped with... 5- the Weapons systems are divided into: A- the rheinmetall 120mm L55, which is superior to the Russian 120 mm 2a46 L48 gun in terms of durability or the number of shells fired before it needs to be replaced, and provides performance data superior to its Russian counterpart... B- the coaxial 20 mm rapid-fire gun, this caliber can either be adopted as coaxial machine gun on board the t14 Armata, or replace the auxiliary 12.7mm with a 20mm caliber, or add it alongside the 12.7mm to increase and diversify the auxiliary firepower, especially with the utilization of unmanned turret, distributing the tank crew inside the hull and expansion the usage of artificial intelligence applications... 6- the munitions, and propellent, especially the AFPSDs and the mp-high explosive-tracer dm11 munitions withIHE (Insensitive High Explosive) warhead with a programmable fuse and ballistic cap, which provide better overall performance regarding the penetration and programmable destruction capabilities than its Russian counterparts and have a maximum range equal to or higher than the Russian one, but perhaps the maximum range is related to the elevation of the tank gun barrel, even when a less power propellant charge is used...
