  • I think Mikkelsen did a great job in this scene as always, like a lot of his scenes, there's a sinister undertone to his line deliveries, but a certain charm and grace, which makes it a little more believable that he would be trusted. The problem is the music, which took away from the subtlety that the other versions of this scene had. The show in general often uses excessive music to spell out the drama to the audience, which is a common problem with modern TV shows in my opinion, but it really stands out in a scene we've seen in the films.

Such different, yet beautifully haunting portrayals, imaginations, and performances, of Hannibal and this scene in particular. I recommend everyone to take the 10-15 minutes to compare these... Incredible insights ranging from psychology and psychopathy, to acting and writing, bringing the books and characters to life, and interpreting what they are like and how it should be portrayed, and chasing that dragon of imagination, how your vision may or may not translate into reality through your actions/acting:) I love this, and that there are multiple, AMAZING versions of this character and this scene specifically (shoutout to the late and gorgeous Gaspard Ulliel

Michael Mann gave us a brilliant piece on screen just after the book...👍🏻

  • I overall really like Mikkelsen, but I actually think this is one of his less convincing scenes. Both Anthony Hopkins and Brian Cox sounded more genial and persuasive over the phone to the secretary, Mikkelsen sounds more cold, plus his heavy Danish accent makes him obviously not "Bob Greer". It feels like he's just kind of doing a rote autopilot run-through of the same scene we've already seen twice before by Cox and Hopkins, and IMO their versions were both better.

    • The entire conversation felt rushed and detached. There was no hesitation or concern from the secretary about giving out private information. It didn't seem like it was bad acting so much as no direction and no understanding of character motivation. Even the voice of the secretary didn't match the profile Hannibal would have quickly developed of a young traditionalist woman who would have been flustered and enthusiastic about the topic of her wedding. In this case, Hopkin's version captures the scene much better.

It flows well, but he comes across like a supernatural entity with nothing behind the eyes. Hopkins had a decent job of seeming charming. Hopkins' Hannibal even tells her that he doesn't want to get the regular secretary in trouble, so the social engineering and manipulation is very clear to the audience, as well as showing how Hannibal's knowledge of psychology makes him very dangerous.

  • Much as I like Mads as an actor, anything good in this scene is down to the lines from the brilliant book Red Dragon (no movie has lived up to it, but Manhunter is by far the best; Red Dragon the movie is terrible and Norton was even worse than I thought when he was cast; absolute disaster), with clumsy updating of details (talking of files instead of Rolodex). As for the rest, the scene is a million times better in Manhunter, from the set-up and guards' arrival, to the actual phone call. Brian Cox played it perfectly and his reactions throughout are superbly acted.
