UFC featherweight champion Volkanovski (25-1 MMA, 12-0 UFC) was called into the octagon by Makhachev, who submitted Charles Oliveira this past Saturday at UFC 280 to claim the vacant lightweight title.
Makhachev (23-1 MMA, 12-1 UFC) is game to defend his title against Volkanovski at UFC 284 in Perth, Australia, and is oozing confidence after using his dominant grappling to finish another opponent. But Volkanovski says Makhachev won’t be able to control him.

Not sure why Islam going down after 0 defences is the route to #1 p4p. I thought it would be a handful of title defences then moving up a weight class. On a side note, I think Khabib in a strange way wants to chalk up a loss or 2 for Islam, for his own legacy.

Also Max is built different he fought Dustin at 155 2x I think if not 1 time which is super hard challenge not it’s Alex turn to find out why 155 will forever be the best division and he’s too little for that weight class Islam in 2-3 rounds!

@@ptrgr72 Islam is not only wrestling, but he has that combat sambo and judo background as well. He is well ahead of Volk in the grappling dept by a wide margin. Sure Volk has a bit of a speed and striking advantage, but he is also the one moving up to fight at LW. Islam is a huge LW. I guess my point is I do not see Volk being able to neutralize the grappling of Islam. Islam catches him and he is not getting back up, even though he thinks he will. That Daegastani top pressure will be unlike anything he has ever seen. And still...

Islam doesn't deserve to fight Volk. He should have had to defend the belt in the division at least once before getting a super fight. Islam should be defending vs Beneil if rankings mattered at all. If Islam won that fight, then I would be 100% for this fight because it actually makes sense then.

Volks takedown defence is far better than oliveria's, he's short and stocky so he has a better chance at standing up if taken down, "grappling' is to broad of a term to use here, it's more which areas of grappling can volk excel at.

Alexander volkanovski is a good fighter but he can't beat Islam makhachev. It's just not possible. Islam is way too diversify and he is the most skillful fighter in the UFC.
