Surrender to the Spirit - Bishop Barron's Sunday Sermon

2023 ж. 26 Мам.
257 022 Рет қаралды

Friends, we come to the great Feast of Pentecost-the feast, par excellence, of the Holy Spirit. A critique of the Western Church is that we don’t speak sufficiently of the third person of the Trinity, and there might be some truth to that. I’d like to follow Vatican II in trying to bring the Holy Spirit very much into the forefront. Our readings today show us the great power of the Spirit-a power that unleashes great saints, fiery speech, and a liberating unity. Surrender your life over to the Holy Spirit, and-trust me-you will tap into this source of power to change things for the better.

  • Funny and strange. I was having ,as usual ,a horrific day of grief over my husband as it’s nearly five years now. I was leaving mass ,walking towards the priest and he says to me with a huge smile, “ when I look at you I see hope “. !? ! The nicest compliment ever. Perhaps he saw the Holy Spirit ? Peace everyone. Hi B.B. , loving you more and more.

    • Quran says Allah is “Al-Ahad”(one/indivisible).Deductively, It is impossible for perfection to have parts. Not just the Quran(preserved), but also the old/new testament(not preserved) textually scream oneness of Allah. So, then why believe in trinity and associate two imaginary parts to Allah(one/indivisible/self-sufficient/all-loving)?How could your love/worship be undivided/exclusive only for Allah(the most Exalted) when there are two other equally unique/perfect entities? If three entities are distinct and co-equal/co-eternal, then How do you define “Trinity” as one/undivided (“Al Ahad”)?

    • Blue sky, God the Father is not an entity or a person, God is simply not something anyone except Jesus could understand. God the son, was simply a man much like you or I, except he was filled with this HOLY Spirit that same one that we at times are gifted to be in communion with too. This Jesus was able to live without sin, because he like God never made it about himself, like Allah he always had his heart and mind set on saving us from ourselves, and our sin. Allah is the GREAT CREATOR SPIRIT the first and by any other name is still impossible for us to know fully. We at best get to learn what pleases This Holy Spirit of Truth. We at times can love unconditionally, perfectly in fact divinely like our LORD. SHEMA brother, the LORD is one. We are called to be one with this Holy Spirit and share the love. Much love Know this, the day is coming soon when there will be no more division, all will be united in love and know the truth. Many Christians, Muslims and Jews who still wait will fight against this unity, because they believe in their religion, and no other religion can be worthy, they don't understand the true Church of God is not run by man or any religion. Soon the the Holy Spirit of Truth will bring all things done in darkness and in secret to light, and all will bend a knee. To the LORD of lords and KING of kings. Some will be terrified, others will weep with tears of joy, but every knee will bend, bless you. May the peace of our LORD Jesus be with you by the power of the Holy Spirit. Much love and many prayers.

  • Bishop Barron does a great job illustrating the power of the Holy Spirit with examples, like the nonviolent force of Pope St. John Paul II in ending communism. Hearing the idea of speaking the same language of faith reminds me of how the many gathered at World Youth Day in Panama spoke different languages, yet we were united in speaking the language of our one faith. The Holy Spirit was truly present in bringing us together as One Church. I certainly experienced this reality when attending Mass at Tocumen Airport's chapel, celebrated in Spanish, with a homily in German translated into Portuguese. Happy and Blessed Pentecost! (Even if I write this a day after the fact, Pentecost still gives us plenty to celebrate.) Rejoice in the Risen Christ! Rejoice in the Risen Christ continually present in the Holy Spirit. Alleluia!

  • Excellent sermon, Bishop. Thank you so much. It's God's grace to us. The image of rainwater from the Church father which nourishes the flowers and plants and trees, etc. compares to the Holy Spirit's power to nourish the saints are power. When there is unity, the Holy Spirit has gathered us. When there is division, we have to be careful with the devils/Satan. Yes, the Holy Spirit is powerful. There are so much to learn about Him and we need His help to guide us. Pray that we will surrender ourselves and let the Holy Spirit works on us. Thank you.

  • Many years ago I was blessed undeservedly in actually seeing the holy spiritual. I was in mass around Easter when adults are baptised during mass. A man was on the alter being baptised and the priest made the sign of the cross on the Holy bible with his finger. I saw a flame on the end of his finger which totally shocked me. I looked everywhere with lightening speed my heart thumping, searching for an explanation such as a light from a window, a candle etc but nothing. He moved his finger towards the man’s forehead to make the sign of the cross and the flame was carried on the end of his finger to the man’s forehead where he made the sign of the cross, the flame disappeared into the man’s forehead. I was looking around frantically to see if anyone else had seen it but everyone else was watching normally. I have drawn on this blessing for many years and told a few people when I have been moved to do so. God is great, our father and redeemer, saviour, friend, brother, creator, All. ❤️ 🔥

  • It is my belief that Pentecost is what really told us that Mass, not just the homily, should be in the common language. I don't know just when it was decided that the Mass should be celebrated in Latin, but it's a shame that it took until Vatican II for us to REALLY celebrate the Mass together. I'm old enough to remember the Mass being in Latin and I was an altar boy that had to learn all the responses in Latin. Of course, I couldn't understand it unless I looked at a translation. ( I still have my St. Joseph Daily Missal with both Latin and English. It's in sad shape, but is still usable with care.) Now, though, we are facing another schism by people who try to say the Mass should only be in Latin. They say the celebrant should face away from the people. They are missing so much. I've heard some saying we haven't had a Pope since Pius XII. The Church has faced many bad times. It still survives and will survive.

    • Many people I speak to that revere the Latin Mass believe that the church always said Mass in Latin. That we should stick to our roots. Well if we stick to our roots, then we are in the right place now. Ignorance is indeed bliss

    • @@juliemarquez92 All it takes is a moment of thought to realize that it wasn't originally in Latin, because most, if not all, the apostles and disciples didn't speak Latin. They would have spoken Aramaic, Greek, and other languages, but NOT Latin. "The Council of Trent (1545-1563) codified the Latin mass from earlier liturgies and approved the Roman Missal that was used from 1570 until the mid-1960s. The priest celebrated mass with his back to the congregation, which prayed silently or followed the Latin prayers in books called missals." Also, one reason the celebrant faced away from the people goes back to the days of monasteries. There were numerous priests and they all had to say the Mass each day. There wasn't enough time for all to use just one, or two, altars. So, there were small niches along the sides of the church, each with an altar and cross, where many masses could be being said at the same time

  • "Let your Spirit descend and renew the face of the earth, this earth." This powerful prayer, spoken by John Paul II during his first visit to Poland, on the Feast of Pentacost, is considered in Poland to be a changing moment in history.

  • Thank you Bishop Barron for this talk. I think you are correct that the Holy Spirit is not addressed enough. I started watching talks from Father Ed Broom (in California, LA Diocese; perhaps you know him). He stresses going to the Holy Spirit and we pray to the Holy Spirit before every talk. He taught me the 7 gifts which I never learned about. So much to learn! Thank you for helping bring us closer to God and the Holy Spirit.
