  • I have rebuilt some really intricate things in my day. My son has watched me do this, and every chance he gets, he always watches intently, and asks the right questions. I also have the habit of treating those times as a classroom, and explain what I am doing and why. The only issue I have with these rebuild videos is that there is not a good verbal tutorial along with it. The best I’ve seen is the channel, Primitive Technology. Watching is one thing. Turning in the Closed Captions and you’ll get the narration and the logic as to WHY!!!

      @Supernumerary@Supernumerary7 ай бұрын
    • Typically, it’s merely worn out brushes on a worn out commutator making for poor current flow. A motor has to be really shot to necessitate new windings. We see this most often with small DC motors, like power window motors. The rotor/stator armature assemblies will be fine, but the brushes and commutator surface is worn out. Similar with altenators. Hardly ever see burnt windings, but we commonly see bad diode rectifiers or bad regulators. Back in the day you could buy replacement components.

    • Like, for instance, if the first step of heating and quenching (in water?) was just to loosen things via thermal expansion and contraction, or if the paper insulation needed to be burned up and soaked off. Would like to know about that stuff. Adding informative subtitles is quite easy. I'd be willing to format that info into an SRT file. KZhead allows video creators to simply upload SRT subtitle files quite easily.

  • Very nice job. Got one question. The rotor plates are painted with an insulator to mitigate eddy current losses. Heating the thing up like that could affect this isolation. Why did you heat the whole thing up like that? You also reused the windings. Were any seriously damaged? So while I loved this video, I am not sure why you did this. What was wrong with the starter that required you to go this far?

    @devmeistersuperprecision4155@devmeistersuperprecision41557 ай бұрын
    • Normally the whole thing is dipped in a varnish type of insulating liquid in a vacuum chamber, that enables the insulating liquid to penetrate between the discs. Heating the whole thing burns off the old hardened insulating coatings and allows the copper "wires" to come out easily. Even if the whole thing(rotor) isn't dipped in an insulating liquid at the end and there is no insulation between the lamination discs, my guess would be that since it's a starter motor rotor and turned ON only for a very short period of time(just to get the engine started) the eddy currents would not be an issue. The windings are usually not damaged, they are thick copper flat wires, so they are reusable, unless they are obviously damaged in which they definitely would be replaced with new ones. Some times the insulation comes off the wires due to vibrations or heat etc and that causes short circuit, so the rotor is repaired/reconditioned with new insulation materials. I hope that answers your questions!!

    • my GUESS for the heating (key word is guess) is annealing, since copper has a known precipitation (it hardens with age) as well as it work/strain-hardens in this case the very minor vibrations of the motor and constant thermal cycle it undergoes via electricity, the result may be too high of a risk with it being brittle to try removing the wire without heat treating it. The heating and rapid quenching in water returns it to a softer more malleable state, pretty much the opposite of steel which usually hardens under such rapid changes in temp.

  • А где испытания якоря в сборе с индуктором? Проще говоря, где испытания стартера с новым якорем? Считаю, что стержни обмотки якоря необходимо было покрыть лаком для исключения пробоя от влажности. 🤔

  • Great work. However, I have 2 comments. 1. You should not sand lamination. You may short some of them which will lower efficiency and create heat. 2. By heating lamination, you change their magnetic domains. A more complex heat treatment is required. Again it impacts motor efficiency. Regards
