Wild West
This wild frontier has been forged by the elements and built by monumental forces. Over millennia America's most iconic landscapes have been carved out; wind sculpted deserts, like Death Valley and the Grand Canyon; giant redwood forests fed by precious waters; and extreme coastlines - from the wave sculpted shores of the pacific to the warm sheltered sea of cortex. Nowhere in America is more extreme, more varied and more spectacular than the Wild West.
Welcome to BBC EARTH! The world is an amazing place full of stories, beauty and natural wonder. Here you'll find 50 years worth of astounding, entertaining, thought-provoking and educational natural history content. Dramatic, rare, and exclusive, nature doesn't get more exciting than this.

  • I once had the pleasure of seeing bison just before a rut live on a preserve. They are simply enormous creatures, video doesn't do them justice. I remember seeing a lone bison lying in the forest, away from the herd, and our tour guide explained that that's how very old males spend their time during the rut. They can't fight anymore, so they rest.

  • Worked on a bison ranch in Wyoming for eight years 2008 to 2016. We were out feeding the bison in winter and two of tge biggest bulls started going at it. We stopped the tractor and hay wagon and sat on the hay to watch. Just as shown in this video the bulls went at it...the horns clicked and tufts of hair went flying. The younger bison got excited and gathered around as though watching a prize fight. Eventually one bull broke off but they both looked beat walking away with their tongues hanging down to the ground. BISON are awesome animals .

  • I saw a big fight between two bulls in Yellowstone a few years ago it was really intense. Probably even more than this as the one bull ran at about 30 mph for several thousand feet to catch up with the other one, he fought. we followed in the car and got a bird's eye view without getting too close. I would say we were about 100 yards away. We were there in August during the height of the rut. I have been there five times, so I got a chance to see a lot the park had to offer. I also got to see two bull elk fight on a different trip in late September although that was not nearly as intense.

  • A guy I know had two male buffalo brothers that he had raised from the time they were just calves, and they had always been fine around each other. However, when they had matured enough and were in their rut, they’re just big, muscular, violent and testosterone filled animals. They had always fed out of a sort of concrete bunker with a trough in it, and one day, during the mating season when they were most aggressive/competitive, while one was eating, the other went nuts and smashed into its side, slamming it into the concrete wall and killing the other animal.

  • We used to raise bison, man what magnificent creatures. I'll never forget, at the peak of our farm, we had I think 36 cows and 2 bulls that lived in a single pasture (we had 4 we moved them between). The bulls would always coexist peacefully in the pastures, never so much as even giving a bad glance at one another. BUT whenever we'd move them from one pasture to another, where they had to go through runways and corrals of sorts, one bull would make sure all the cows went first and he'd bring up the rear, while the other remained in the other pasture. The first bull would wait in the runway, sometimes for hours, for the other bull to show up, and when he did they'd just go at it. Sometimes the fights lasted a few seconds, sometimes a few minutes, one time a fight (the *last* fight) lasted for over 45 minutes where one bull finally killed the other by pinning him up against the fence and goring him. But once the fight was over, they'd both go through the runway and live in peace again. It was so interesting when they did that. It was almost as if one bull was saying, "We're moving on, over my dead body are you coming with us".
