Don’t be fooled, Rodgers sand Farve had rings and MVPs, even Lamar behind Flacco had a guy with a ring. Kirk Cousins is on his 3rd stop and has how many playoff wins? Either something is wrong with Kirk or wrong with the front office.
Michael Penix could wait 2 years he can get his health and nutrition right he's also a good kid this is perfect .
It does not matter if the Penix pick will be right long term (like Love or Rodgers or Hurts). The point is those teams did nothing in the short term after drafting those "future" quarterbacks because they fixed future not present issues. Penix may be great in the future, but Atlanta just put their present on hold after spending 180M on Cousins. Also, Love/Rodgers/Hurts were all Pick 20 or later. (not 8). Premier Edge and WR on the board...

No the Falcons did what every team should. Get a QB and get them actually ready for the NFL. Do anyone remember what has just happen to Zach Wilson? Get your future, have a great QB for today, and with a good draft strategy then you pick a needed player in the later rounds where other teams overpay. Not even a Falcon fan but it is better than a Denver Broncos for Russell Wilson move all day.

So you are drafting him to sit on the bench for 3 years? By the time he gets the chance to start he will soon be a free agent. He was a reach, even IF the Falcons needed a QB, Penix was projected to go late in the 1st round or even drop into the 2nd round. Brilliant.

Kirk is extremely insecure. He won’t help Penix. He actively campaigned in MN to prevent us from drafting his replacement. He doesn’t want competition. That QB room is gonna be contentious!

I wouldn't have done it, but I'm starting to understand the Penix pick. The Falcons were facing another rebuild in 2 years without a succession plan. Waiting until next year or the year after that, replacing Kirk would've been harder and more expensive. The Falcons are betting that they can draft to both win now AND win later. That's a helluva gamble. We'll see.

There is no contender in the league with 2 starting receivers a TE and RB all on rookie deals if they needed to grab anything it was edge rusher but there will be some great ones left

The Falcons drafted Desmond Ridder not too long ago. Vick and Ridder proved that these types of QBs don't work in Atlanta. They made a move in the right direction with Cousins only to take a step back by drafting a second round talent with character issues at #8.

in order to trade down, you need to have someone willing to forfeit major assets to move up to #8.... this isn't Madden Franchise mode where you can basically just trade for anything you want lol i agree that signing Cousins is weird if they wanted Penix in the Top 10 but this whole "they could have moved down, they could have got him in the 2nd rd" etc stuff is just people who think their mock drafts are supposed to be reality.... CLEARLY there weren't any teams looking to sell the farm to move up to #8, and Penix would NOT have been there past 13.... can't just force a team inbetween those spots to give you a haul to move up

Honestly I think the panthers picking Legette was a surprisingly great move. Yeah they coulda got him at 33 and kept their 5th rd pick but now they get a 5th year option on a guy w massive upside at a position they’ve desperately needed value at

Fox... all of those QBs were drafted outside of the top-20.. NOT TOP 8. Blank just watched as his $100 mill guaranteed to Kirk was wasted. The team didn't get better now, they have a bunch of holes, & now the GM is on the hot seat. If they are picking top 10 again next year, GM will be fired.
Mike Vick was drafted #1 and only played the last 2 games of his rookie year, before starting his 2nd year.
Vick had potential not seen in the NFL in 20 years but needed to develop as a QB. Penix is a ready made QB and, quite possibly, the most intelligent QB in the draft.. he doesn't need to sit for 2+ years.

Help me understand something because I'm not a big NFL fan, and I truly appreciate it. HOW is it that they are giving negative criticism about ATL pick, but praising Minnesota pick? 🧐🤔 So, it's bad that ATL drafted a Black QB who could learn, study and be ready ahead of time? 'Kirk Cousins concerned Falcons’ decision to draft Micha doesn’t help team this season'. And hes right. I think Falcons rushed needing another potential starter, when they should draft immediate impact players.
I actually thought Penix Jr. would go top 10 and idk why everyone is so surprised he went 8! As someone who lives 40 min from seattle ,thats watched allot of this guy .. hes special and has the best deep ball out of all the quarterbacks in this draft and its not even close plus hes a seasoned vet. Falcons were smart taking the best QB available as kirks backup because there are some uncertainties with kirk and if he will even be able to play at his previous level coming off this bad recent injury. Falcons are stacked and with Kirk and Penix as a 1 two 2 punch at QB is arguably the best duo now in the NFL for the position. Penix is for sure the best backup in the nfl now and the one problem i see is , falcons now have two great quarterbacks both with previous bad injuries ,which is worrisome. Id bet Kirk is QB1 this season and next season they have Kirk and Penix battle it out for the QB1 spot even with kirks contract thats in place. If penix can evolve and stay healthy ,the dude has a higher ceiling that kirk for sure. Gunna be an exciting year for the NFL no doubt!
I guess it all comes down to how you rate a particular player. Clearly, the Atlanta crew had Pennix rated very high and the Giants didn’t have JJ ranked high on their board. It’s also important to remember that a little less than 50% of QB’s drafted in the first round succeed.
The question should be, how badly can kirk lose before penix gets thrown in? If they have a bad start, people going be calling for penix while paying kirk.

Some of these examples they give are higher projected picks falling and a team taking a QB they didn’t expect to be available. If they want to sit someone 2-3 years pick a 20 year old guy like JJ who needs time to develop. If Drake Maye fell to 8 and they moved quickly and got him that would be different. Atlanta has left themselves with a defense that will underperform.
We understand why the Penix Jr pick was made..Kirk can basically be cut after 2 years for minimal cap hit..The issue is if you were going to get a QB at 8, you could have gotten a cheaper bridge QB in free agency, he didnt have to be that expensive..A lot of that money could've gone to sorting out that defence..
Sit for 2 years is the old school formula for success. I like it, tried and true method.

MT is a clown. Penix to Atl is a great pick. Cousins is and has always been a place holder. He’ll be gone after one year. Plus Penix wasnt gonna be there later in the draft. The Saints, Raiders, and Seahawks all tried to move up to get Penix. He wasnt falling past the Seahawks at worst. Falcons will be good at qb for a long time. Great pick.
Cousins is coming off a blown achilles, Penix makes for solid back up and eventual starter
I agree with RC on McCarthy. You don't want sloppy seconds getting the fourth quarterback in the draft when you can get the top two next year or the year after. Don't force the pick. That's how you got Daniel Jones in the first place.
I really like Penix. He might end up being the 2nd best qb taken this year. He’s experienced and fairly developed. But Atlanta? Dudes gonna be 30 by the time Cousins not getting paid $50M a year. Atlanta going to be looking for a way out of that contract… especially since it has a no trade clause.
Idk why Kirk is mad about this he was drafted in the same class at RGIII and look how that worked out. Business is business
I disagree with what Mike T said about the Giants passing on JJ McCarthy. He needed a team that had the talent and plan in place for a rookie QB to succeed. That was not the Giants, who needed receivers and the line is still in question. The Vikings are a great place for JJ and if he can't perform right away then we know he can't play in the NFL. In the long run, I think the Giants made the right move and will get someone in that QB room in 2025.

Falcons are smart. They are looking at it from a organization standpoint and not a coach's choice. Long term, season 2 or 3. They believe that penix will learn from cousins last 1 or 2 seasons left realistically. They may not think that cousins will go to super bowl but playoffs probably

Great pick. They will be too good with Cousins at QB to get a top 20 pick next 2-3 years. Cousins will get them to playoffs next two years and probably miss 6-8 games and let Penex develop at little. This will end up a great move. Cousins shouldn't be mad they basically told him the team will be to good when he is there to draft another QB.

The ONLY way that Michael Penix at 8 makes sense is if they anticipate have a very low pick next year. They may have felt that they could grab their guy this year, and don’t have to mortgage their future in future years. I’m still grasping for straws, but this is the most baffling selection in recent memory.

No. The agent fee is an expense that is deducted before any taxes are figured. No pro athlete is taxed until all business deductions are taken.

Terry Fontenot has done nothing but a poor job at putting a winning team on the field over the last few years. Picking Penix is a reflection of his lack of talent as a GM.
Atlanta outside of Mike Vick has some of the most overrated qb’s that always failed when the lights were bright. What’s the point in having great position players with no one to throw to them. Cousins is a little better than average that can keep you in the game. Penix is the game changer with the elite arm and leadership qualities that will increase the confidence of the team when he is in there in the biggest moments.
Remember, Atlanta had Brett Favre and they gave him away.
