To all the people saying the mom was trying to kill the calf, she wasn't... She was trying to get him up so they could run away. You can tell because she went to her knees, then tried to scoop him up. Most animals do not mercy kill, they abandon.
@@camaniyack Exactly. It may have seemed rough but that was pure desperation.
I know right.
@@shukria485 the leopard needed to eat. I've seen them eats warthog and they have a hard time killing them.
@@camaniyack It needs to eat but I don't agree the leopard eating babies. I wish the mother didnt leave the baby..well she tried though lol.
The basic problem is that wildebeests have horns that are so vertical in relation to their eye balls that they cannot see what it is they are striking unless their eyeballs are pointed directly at the ground. In essence, they are like a fencer with blindfolds on. They cannot see what they are striking. In this case, because the calf is so small and tiny, the mama is easily able to strike her child. Whereas if she were doing the same thing to try to get the leopard to go away, the leopard could easily evade her strikes. At best the horns would hit the leopard's feet.
I don’t think the mother was trying to hurt the baby I think it was trying to make a stand up XD
I think the situation and smell of blood confused her.
Usually, ungulates recognise their calves from smell. In this situation, probably her calf had the smell of the leopard on
@@Troodonformosus and the blood
she wasnt able to think if it was the baby or the leopard
ROFL. Except mother buffalos would NEVER do that to their calves. Their minds don't function that way. Rather the mother pawed the ground in agitation/anger/aggression as she would with an actual leopard and attempted to kill the "leopard" (her calf). After she had stopped flinging the "leopard" around a few times and had a good sniff she stopped attacking because she realized it was actually her calf.

@@Rodan727 So you mean there are fathers that actually come back after buying some milk.
The leopard fangs have tap or severed the spinal nerves, hence why the calf can no longer stand. You can see the initial bite was to the back of the neck. He was done.
If the spinal cord was damaged that far up, the calf wouldn't have been able to move its legs at all.
@@danni1993 so why was the calf not able to stand?
@@TriggaHappy00121213 His leg(s) were probably broken.

2:01 The leopard is like “oh god what did I do?!”
What appears to have happened is that the calf suffered debilitating nerve injury from the fatal bite. I believe the mother was confused and thought the leopard was still attacking the calf.
yes finally someone with knowledge!
David Simmons Thank you!
+Will “Nada” Havens ....What???
zr de What's the difficult part?
Partially correct. The Wildebeest mother was desperately trying to get the calf back on its legs to run away. Since Wildebeests don't have hands or any other means to pick up a calf or anything else, apart from her teeth, which lacks the necessary dexterity, she used the only thing available to her: her horns. She wasn't trying to injure the calf, this is just extreme desperation meets physical limitations in the wild.
0:17 This is a graphic demonstration of why wildebeests are the best meal for lions. As you can see at the 0:17 mark, an adult wildebeest cannot use its horns to hurt another animal unless the strike happens while their eyes are pointed directly to the ground. They literally cannot see what it is they are horning. They can only guess. By the time a wildebeest has lowered its horns, most lions are able to get the hell out of there. This is because mother nature did a horrible job of giving wildebeests vertical horns. They don't have horns like buffalos that curve around the forehead, which allow buffaloes to horn more easily and use their hammerheads. Also, a wildebeest has nowhere near the amount of strength and power that a buffalo has in the neck area. There are just a couple of videos on youtube of wildebeests hooking lions. It's extremely rare according to rangers I have spoken with at Kruger.

The Leopard broke the calf's neck. Leading to paralysis and uncontrolled movement.
Pretty sure the mother broke its neck...
Lep clearly broke calfs back. If you have any observation skills you would have seen and or have known breaking the backs of potential threat or dinner is common amongst these type of cats.

Leopard: trying to kill a calf Calf: calling mom Calf mom: So you have chosen death!
That... Was incredibly sad. Poor mother seemed so desperate for her baby to live, and the little guy tried so hard, too. But that is nature. It's unfortunate that the kill wasn't more efficient; those types of predators are usually really good with that, but if its neck truly was broken then the chances are high that it didn't feel any pain... Just unimaginable fear.
I haven’t seen any evidence that efficient kills are a priority to these animals. In fact, most videos I’ve seen involve a prey animal being eaten while it’s still alive.
@@gregamania1327 Correct, people just type things on the internet.
You'd think the fukin prick filming it would try and help the poor thing.
@@gregamania1327 they are. Live prey = more energy the predator has to spend on hunting. Energy, just as food, is not promised in nature, so animals have to manage both of those things carefully.

Catherine Sleepybear did you just assume there's only 2 genders? Bigot.
Catherine Sleepybear Nah, the mother is nothing compared to the leopard's teeth. The mother was frantically trying to get her baby up so they could escape. They have no arms after all..

You know whats sad? The fact that if the mom wasn't there the leopard would have went for the neck and put the thing out of its misery, But in the mother attempts to save it's baby, She made the thing go threw more pain and suffering than it would have.
Not as sad as your spelling and grammar.
If you think my grammar is sad you must be new to the internet. I've seen much worse.
mom doesn't know any better really...maybe she can only really tell that her baby is in danger and hurt and need protection from the leopard?..she'd probably be confused about exactly why her baby can't get up and walk. sure animals can sense in ways we may not even know but she just trying to help her baby.

Wow.... I'm going to argue the calf would have had a much better chance if the mother wasn't gouging it for a minute! What the crap, mom?!
+zlizgirl yeahh... wildeebeasts brain must be the size of a fucking corn!
+zlizgirl She was probably a first-time mom and didn't know any better...
+zlizgirl There's nothing the wildebeest could have done differently. All they have to work with are horns, hooves and tongues. There was a small chance the calf couldn't run because of a dislocation or even just panic, and tossing it around could have jarred it back into action. But it's much more likely that the leopard severed some important tendons with its teeth and claws, in which case the calf was doomed regardless. But doing nothing definitely wouldn't have helped. It wasn't going to self-heal it's left-front leg. The mother wildebeest used the only tools nature gave her. They weren't enough.
+zlizgirl its okay..there is a big crocodile waiting in the river to rip the mothers intestines out

Seems like tough love on the part of the mother. "Get on your feet, soldier!"
I'm curious as to why the mother leaves the calf unattended as it screams like 5 different times.
More that likely she has abandoned the calf but is also battling her mother instincts at the same time. Animals have emotions but they are still to some degree are programmed to do certain things. She was likely just going to leave the calf behind as it comes in nature that mothers often abandon offspring if they know there nothing they can do for it. But as she walks away the leopard arrives and her instinct is still to either run away from the predator or chase it away. Shes would probably want to abandon a disabled calf in peace and not know what happens to it. But since she isn't fare I'm pretty sure she doesn't wanna know the leopard ate it.
