Why Trevor Lawrence's rookie season was WAY better than you think

Jacksonville Jaguars quarterback Trevor Lawrence put up some horrible stats in his rookie season, but considering the context, his debut campaign was likely much better than you realize.

  • As a jags fan who watched every single game this season, I was disgusted with how people were treating Trevor after this season. Too many people were saying he’s a bust, yet it was only his rookie season. Plus he plays for the Jaguars, I mean we’re lucky to win more than 5 games in a season. I was SHOCKED that we managed to get 3 wins after the Urban disaster. Trevor has a bright future, this video is great 👍

Their coverage of other positions is great, MJD in particular, but I'm continually baffled by how wrong they are about QB prospects.

  • Regardless of how good or bad it actually is, I think judging any rookie especially a Quarterback after ONE SEASON and declaring them a bust or not is rushing to conclusions. Even Peyton Manning would've seemed a bust going off his rookie numbers, there is an acclimation process to adjusting to the pro level. Give it least a couple more years before you decide if he's a bust or not I say.

  • Lawrence was the highest touted prospect for a reason. He has all the physical tools that you could ever want, build, arm, speed, height, but his best tool is between his ears. He doesnt get rattled. He doesnt lose his confidence after a bad throw or a bad game. He is the same guy on game day as he is at practice. Hes only going to keep getting better and better, and hopefully the supporting cast he has will too.

The year after that he was 33/48 for 400 yards 2 tds, and an interception. That’s (rounding) a 69% passing percentage and is higher then his 2018 game against Alabama. His offenses were also consistently highly ranked in index ratings such as OFEI that account for the strength of the opposing defense.

  • I remember Burrow getting a similar level of hate. NFL fans mostly care about optics and narrative. The narrative was the Lawrence was the most talented being to walk the planet and anything short of a complete turn around is horrible. The optics were that Lawrence has bad stats and a bad team You can't learn natural athleticism or talent. QBs with this amount of talent only ever fail due to work ethic disappearing, injuries, or a bad team holding them down. Lawrence like Burrow, Herbert, Mahomes, etc just need a coach and system that maximizes them. 1 or 2 other core pieces to rely on and take pressure off of Lawrence. Their is a growing tendency of fans to toss QBs under the bus for not being an MVP caliber player in the first few years of their career. Drew Breeze threw more ints than TDs for like his first 4 years. Imagine if the Saints said piss off and cut him. Failing and learning from that is what makes the great QBs great. Now yes, there just some QBs that lack the raw talent or ability to really learn. QBs will not pan out a lot of the time. Just looking at stats isn't gonna prove that tho

  • I think watching this vid on 12/26/2022 with the Jags now in 1st in their division shows why this 2nd look at TLaw 5 months ago was spot on. Watched Trev play high school and college ball so I knew he had the physical skills but more important, the stuff between the ears and he would be every bit as advertised quicker than later. I have no illusions the Jags are winning the SuperBowl this year but I've also seen where Trev was written off as a rookie before and at the end of the night, Trev and not Alabama was hoisting the hardware so I'll never say never. Regardless how this all plays out, Jacksonville fans have to be gitty about their team's future and rightly so. And next year TLaw has Ridley for a target too. Yes because the numbers and lack of wins say so, but no for all the points made in this video. One thing that everyone that calls Trevor a bust seems to forget, is how many DROPS the TEAM had. Trevor can put the ball where its supposed to be, but he can't force the catch to be complete. I am not the happiest that we gave Kirk as much money as we did, but he is solid, and I wish upon wishes that we might make a run at DK Metcalf in a trade. If Trevor had even one SOLID WR1, it would've been a totally different season for the Jags. Here's hoping Year 2 will show what he can really do. With Etienne back, things could be really fun!

    • @@cravenlevay8761 Dude what are you talking about we’re talking about Trevor Lawerence being a “bust” as you said. Why are you bringing up the chargers & TLaw being “injury prone” when he started all 17 games last year….you sound so stupid if you don’t know football just say that….

  • Can’t really accept his Rookie year as a true Rookie year… Urban ruined all that for him and the team, everybody was affected including fans and ownership. Winning 3 games in that mess was amazing. Troy Aikman and Peyton Manning had similar problems in their Rookie seasons as well. What’s that people say?….Time will tell.

  • This guy will have a revolutionary jump in the upcoming SEASONS! he has the worst coaching situation in the league obviously.. as well as no help on offense! Doug Pederson should help him grow a lot as well as all the additions they have on both sides of the ball! Dude is NOT a bust by any means he has true legitimate skill!!
