Detroit Lions offensive coordinator Ben Johnson quietly put together one of the best offenses in the NFL. Thanks to Johnson, Jared Goff has put up some of the best numbers of his career, and the Lions are geared up to make a playoff run in 2023.

That block by Jamo on the TD run against the Vikings was so nasty.
Great breakdown and makes sense for their draft why they made such an investment in RB. Billy is the most underrated channel on KZhead. Should be on ESPN
Espn's payroll is tied up by the insightful geniuses such as Stephen A Smith ha😊hahahahahahahah
My thought as well. This context really justifies the RB and TE picks in the 1/2 rounds
@@satchelraidincoming636 absolutely, as a Vikings fan, it's really quite frightening because of the amount of mismatches Ben has been able to create. Now with a heavy investment, it makes it all the scarier
That Jahmyr Gibbs picks looks even more appealing now.
Ben and Dan do the little things that makes our team great. Just like what you said Ben set’s things up perfectly. It’s like Ben use’s the defense against itself. It’s all about the Set Up.
Dang bro. You got me fired up for this year. We have even a better RB group. Can’t wait to see Gibbs out there.
And they went and drafted 2 guys in LaPorta and Gibbs who are great at lining up as receivers and did it frequently in college. Instead of the single mismatch with Amon-ra they were looking for last year all the time, you’re gonna have 2-3 of those mismatches available in those 2 WR sets. LaPorta is quick and fluid enough with his size to handle a DB on him and likes lining up all the way out wide, and Gibbs or st.brown on a LB is just automatic. When Jamo is back and defenses have to cover everything over the top, we should really see everything click underneath. Offensively they could really be something special this year.
I just hope he can catch the ball, didn't look to impressive the little I saw of him in preseason.
One little noted and when noted often ridiculed thing about this offense, Jared Goff. The backhand insult of "game manager" (not referenced in this video!) is silly because game management is the most important job of a pro QB. With a schemer like Ben, you need a genuine bona fide QB to run things. Lovce this vid Billy, you got a new subscriber!
The Ben & Caleb duo will go crazy in Washington 🔥
Ha
This is great! Casual fan here who suspects football is a lot more complicated than I think it is. Clear with enough repeats that I could catch on, but not too many to slow the pace. You're the kind of guy I wish I could watch a game with.
Dude I’ve been studying football for 35 years and I still get confused at some of these new concepts. People have no idea how much more advanced it is than NCAA. I mean, it’s almost like a different sport. I’ll rewind my TV 20 times a game in the NFL and go ok now what am I seeing here?
Very well done. Johnsons ability to create mismatches inside and use that to create long punishing drives that tire defenses out, is a very impressive skill.
One thing to also note: one of the biggest problems with the run game last year was broken/missed tackles. With Swift hampered with a shoulder injury, and Williams (who wasn't shy about contact) being dragged to the ground constantly, both RBs had 17 broken tackles on the year. David Montgomery had 20 on his own. Gibbs had 104 over three years in the ACC/SEC. Detroit prioritized players that can evade and break tackles to help extend runs. It's not outside of possibility that this run game is going to be exceptionally better with players that (hopefully) aren't injured as much and can help extend runs to make 2nd/3rd downs smaller.
10:15, what a good block by Jameson Williams and his 115 pound frame 😂
This was my first time watching your videos this was so interesting you definitely know your stuff and I'm a big lions fan and appreciate the coverage of my favorite team.
That first jet sweep got me thinking that the runningback got the ball… wow…
I’m not even a football fan but this was very entertaining. really good work.
Thank you for this. I'm a Detroit sports fan, and even I don't think we're talking about Dan Campbell without Ben Johnson. The rest of the NFL knows this, considering how many offers he got from other teams in the offseason.
Wish the Tiggies still used that as their secondary logo. Love that one; reminds me of my childhood.
we should start calling it the Ben Raid offense, also gibbs in that empty set is going to be nuts.
Ive watched all the training camp videos, was so nice to find this one to distract me for 11 min until the season starts!
Was looking for a breakdown of his offense and philosophy, thx for the video
That run play at 5:00 is a touchdown in Gibbs' hands
They just had the first Chicago game, and there were like 3-5 Swift carries Gibbs would have housed.
Bet ya Gibbs and Montgomery are just chomping at the bit, to run behind that Line
no its not close
I thought the exact thing. Swift got too cute with his feet at times
With the backs we have now, the play action is going to be crazy good
Can't wait until BJ adds Gibbs (WR/RB) and LaPorta (TE/WR) to the mix. He'll take these concepts to the next level.
Ben Johnson is using the same equation to get to different awnsers that are both equally correct...the mad man!
Could you imagine if Barry played with this O line?
Great breakdown Billy
Thanks man
Detroit has been turning up the heat for a while. I think they have a title coming, either way, they've finally found the recipe.
Seems they might be hosting the party!😮
At least they aren’t a punchline anymore
@@evanmarquardt7249 Yeah, far from it. The Goff trade really turbo charged that team and their GM, who served as assistant GM with the Rams during their rebuild, learned everything about drafting and assembling players for a title run. He was, IMO, why the Goff/Stafford trade even happened the way it did. The Rams had that deal done BEFORE the other teams had finished refining their offers, one being the 9ers. It still makes me smile that the 9ers got screwed on that deal. I HATE the 9ers. HATE!!!
I remember someone made a video about how there's 2 ways to build a championship team. You have a young star QB or you stack the roster. The lions officially have that stacked roster down
Whether they'll find the defense is yet to be seen
This vid popped up on my feed. I watch two others who do these type of vids. I can say you are safely a top 3 of the ones i watch.
Imagine when the two receivers in 12 and personnel grouping is Gibbs, Jamo, LaPorta, Mitchell and Montgomery. Gibbs and Jamo in those condensed splits will cause issues for defense. Especially on over routes.
With both on the field defenses will over adjust almost every time Jamo or Gibbs goes in motion. ARSB and LaPorta will likely be the beneficiaries of most of those over adjustments.
@@Grit04 Yup, you can swap St. Brown, Jamo & Gibbs at the receiver spot. All 3 are capable of explosives on the jet motion. Obviously we assume Gibbs and Jamo will house some of those. It’s going to be fun watching it unfold.
Laporta will finish the meal
awesome work
Now add Gibbs, Montgomery, LaPorta and Green ta these play schemes and we'll be watching Defenses enplode onto themselves, and DC having nightmares trying to figure out ways ta stop Goff and Company. YA! GO LIONS.
While I'm super excited for this next season, I have to admin that, as a long time Lions fan, all this positive hype is making me nervous!
Amazing video! Keep them coming
Excellent review
Thank you for explaining a lot of concepts and terms that I don't know of during the video!
Absolutely great breakdown, really enjoyed this video
Nice breakdown of plays.
Earned yourself a subscriber! Love the analysis, this is the first vid I’ve watched from you. Looking forward to seeing the Lions offense do some work this year. Definitely tuning in to your channel more often
Great insight and breakdown! Thanks
Fantastic breakdown
This video made me subscribe to your channel. Fantastic job breaking down the ballet of football.
Great video and analysis of what they do. Detroit is on the rise they're gonna be scary to play this year
Great analysis, instantly subbed. Hope to see your channel grow and some more lions content this year
Well done, man. Thank you.
I especially like how he flat-out tells us that this is designed with the knowledge of what they _don't_ have as well as what they do. While I'm still semi-angry about Campbell & Johnson being unable to adjust to the RBs that they had forcing them to spend a high draft pick & cap $ getting replacements (is it that they _couldn't_ or wouldn't?) I at least can refer to this as The Reason Why even if I don't necessarily think that being unable to adapt is A Strength.
Great video
I mean this in the best way possible but I clicked on the video thinking it was a Brett Kollman film room video and I didn't realize it wasn't until halfway through the video. . . Needless to say I'm not disappointed
Been telling people about Ben Johnson for a while now. Dude's an absolute killer. As a Packer fan, I'll be glad when hes a head coach somewhere and out of the division lol
I can't wait to see what he cooks up with Gibbs and Montgomery in the game together. Lions fan here obviously
well i hate to tell you this but DC also has ALOT of say in how the offense is ran rn.
@@shadybrain3424 Well i hate to tell you this but the offense was hot garbage before Johnson got promoted.
Watching these, this is the First Time that I feel that I'm watching plays that work better in the NFL than in college. What I mean by that is in college, one of the ways we identify a Great Defender is that they run to the ball. Here, that's not happening. That isn't Johnson's doing really. It's simply become that most DCs over-think & consider their defenses to be Lost Sheep who need guidance & thus provide too much of it. Johnson's merely exploiting this. Nothing here looks terribly clever. I love how our host points to how the Lions are trying to do more with less. _That _*_IS_*_ genius_ & it won't be fun for me to see it win because I simply can't seem to get behind these Lions. I'm not sure why.
What a great analysis. Well done, you know your shit.
New to your channel thanks for the great content..
Damn good video! Go lions!!🦁🔥
I love it I think we have a master mind now I cannot wait
@lotusstarr304 They did, that's why he stayed....
@lotusstarr304 he will probably be gone next off-season, we will see though. I'd offer him money at the same level as a HC to get him to stay lol
Sooooo thankful Ben decided to stay
RIGHT!!!!
Well done! New sub. Panther fan.
He is Brian Daboll esk. I also realized when I saw how Josh Allen played before and after Daboll and its clear that he takes allen and makes him the second best QB everyone tries to announce him as.
Daboll was able to call more RPO/Zone read concepts. Not sure I would make that comparison. Obviously due to the skill set difference between Goff and Allen & Daniel Jones.
Is Daniel Jones financially "daboll" 😮
really informative and well done video. ben could be the next great head coach!
A big change as well with Goff running this system with the Lions is that despite having his fair share of timely play action passes which he was used to doing with the Rams, the empty backfield sets helps keep his eyes on the coverage pre and post snap. The obvious mismatches created also key in on who Goff's big reads would be. This would also become more pivotal when both his RBs are solid pass catchers as well.
Excellent analysis and narrative. *click*...Subscribed!
Great breakdown. Got a sub out of me. Keep up the playcalling analysis!
A lot of people don't know this but goff was a real contributer when this offense was created. Last off season goff and Johnson sat down and honestly analyzed what Goff does well and built around that. Mcvay wanted goff to be a robot. Mcvay even wanted to call the protection. That's why the rams ran no huddle. The Rams weren't going fast. Mcvay just wanted everyone lined up so he could give goff direct orders. That killed Goff's development
Need that play caller at Atlanta
You sound just like Brett Kollman! Great video!
"...bite off a whole lot of kneecaps in 2023." Love it!
Holy shit this is the football channel I’ve been missing in my life.
subscribed. thanks.
He’s gonna help Goff get some MVP votes this season
Ben Johnson, YOU are a Seahawk!
DyNasty Bginz ⚒️💙🦁
Doing any of these with Jamo or Gibbs will house a few of these
Look at the tightness of the very first formation shown. That is Sean McVay football. Rams run multiple plays out of a few tight formations. Hate to tell you Jared Goff not BJ installed that offense. The difference are the jumbo packages Dan & BJ installed Lions run that no one else does anymore.
Nice kneecap reference at the end!
Hats off to you, my friend...you know your s__t
So he’s basically using their intelligence against them?
Come to Seattle!!!
Brand New Lions!!!
Top 3 NFL teams all-time: 3. Last season’s Lions. 2. This season’s Lions. 1. Next season’s Lions.
what a genius! it was such a joy seing the lions play football last season! fantasy question: do you think amon-ra st.brown and jahmyr gibbs will compete for touches? jet sweeps for example? I "had to" draft gibbs at 1.05 in a SF League where I'm thin on RBs and I'm asking myself if I should trade one of them
Lions fan here. No not at all. They can both eat in this offense. Amon Ra had one maybe two sweeps last year. He's a pure receiver with the element of surprise everynow and then like the Washington game. Keep them both and enjoy the production.
Personal fantasy move no one cares about but I traded the #1 overall for the 4th overall pick, Drake London and the first second round pick. Ended up with Gibbs, London and laporta. Made this trade before the draft. Thought it was kind of cool seeing it shake out similar to the NFL draft.
Amon-Ra's rushing opportunities were mostly gadget plays, and Gibbs' electric speed should give him the nod on those plays from now on. Related to this, Detroit's RBs didn't catch too many passes because D'Andre Swift has the injury resistance of A(lways)D(damaged) and Jamaal Williams was more of a classic ground-and-pound guy. Gibbs should get plenty of receiving touches this year.
@@antoniotrivelloni8191 I wouldn't be surprised if Gibbs is 2nd on the team in catches, behind St. Brown. With Jamo suspended and Gibbs such an offensive weapon, he will be lining up everywhere, especially the first 6 games.
thank you guys. I'm gonna keep both for now!
I've never seen Brett Kollmann and Billy Stephens in the same room together. 🤨
They are going to throw the ball all over the field. Detroit has the most talented WR group in NFL
Guys a play action wizard! That only works bc both backs are a true threat to run.... Get him to Seattle and do the same w Walker and charbonet
Goff the hiding goat is bout to shock the world 2023 champs
The Lions have done a great job stacking the offense with reliable players that will execute Johnson's plans to perfection. ARSB & Jamo & Gibbs & Monty & Laporta & Mitchell & Leaf & MJJ will all flourish with Goff and that Oline. This offense is very talented and hungry for success.
Just checking out Seahawk future head coach
Exact personal he would have in The ATL.
“WITHOUT A TOP TIER QB!?” - Horrific statement!
He’s not.
@@SeanP7195 In your opinion! STATS (Actual Numbers) SAY OTHERWISE!
@@thomasdonner2495 actually they don’t. All the stats have him about a middle of the pack QB.
@@SeanP7195 WERE R U GETTING THAT INFO FROM?
I almost didn’t watch this video because you called him an evil, his play being diabolical but since they’re saying he’s the front runner for the Commanders to be their next head coach, I figure I’ll just forget you said all that!
It's the little things that you point out in this video that makes me believe the Lions will be a 15-2 team wimmimh the superbowl
Are we absolutely sure that Goff isn't a top tier QB? I'm not. He led a team to a super bowl appearance as a rookie and has only been getting better.
Seahawks new Headcoach
And they’re doing just that i hope Seattle offers this man whatever‼️
Are you by any chance related to Brett Kollman
Appears Detroit will be seeking a replacement for OC soon. I thought Johnson would depart a year ago, but now it is all assured as the Lions O became super dangerous adding Gibbs along with TE/Y LaPorta. Detroit still did not have a dangerous deep X except Williams who is in and out of the rotation at times. Mark Brunell ..........., it makes you wonder an ex-NFL QB might not have the expertise Johnson brought to the table. Tanner Engstrand.....not enough resume to go with the expectations but maybe he knows how to run this system Jared Goff.................give him the play call making ability as he knows how this works first hand
If you have an elite run game... All you need is a qb like goff who is not gunna turn the ball over... Now its all about how that defense is gunna perform... Thats the mystery...
Here after Bills got rid of Dorsey. Bills gotta get this guy as the HC. Cya Mcdermo
Lions having a strong running game? What could possibly go wrong?
Well game #1 2023 they play the chiefs. Spagnuolo and Reid will have somethin for genius OC Johnson.
Who do you see as a future NFL head coach besides Ben Johnson?
When this team gets the PA pass rolling it’s borderline not defendable
Man I PRAY he gets the head coach spot in Seattle ... Everyone wants vrabel who is like I less experienced version of Pete Carrol... Ben j is clearly the best available , not even close.. keep kafja for sure lol, keep vrabel, thank god the shipped Waldron so he's out. 🙏
Sorry Bro, we gotta run it back one more time
Come to Washington
The titans brought back smash mouth football smh.
The nfl is circular. So they aren’t re inventing the wheel here. They’ve established a power running attack to battle against nickel and dime defense, smaller pass covering backers, pass rush oriented d linemen. It’s not genius rather an effective counter to the style currently in vogue within the league. You mentioned that they took advantage of green bays light front. This is the standard which is why their run heavy approach is effective. It also protects Jared Goff quite a bit and promotes home run hitting play action play calls after pulling the back side defense in by lulling them to sleep with heavy run play calls early on in the game.
Lowkey wish we still had Justin Jackson
The players they brought in improved on the model. At least on paper.
You will be over it by week 3
