  • Interesting tidbit : in France anything over 6 Kw (8 bhp) and 45 kph max speed (28 mph) is considered a proper car, so the Twizy is sold in a power and speed-limited variant that is spec'd identically to the AMI. The 17 BHP version on the other hand requires a driving license, meaning that unlike the AMI, the Twizy also has to conform to all the regular passenger car regulations.

  • I'm wondering if the Ami is MECHANICALLY capable of doing more than 29 mph (= 45 km/h). In France, light quadricycles are like scooters : limited to 45 km/h, sometimes electronically or just even with the equivalent of a wedge under the accelerator pedal. I remember the cool kids in high-school there, modifying petrol scooters to get up to 70 km/h. But with different regulation (for example in the UK), maybe Citroën would decide to ditch the limitor ? Still, it does not accelerate as quickly as the Twizy, your video made it very clear. I'd still get an Ami, out of these four, if I were to buy one (it's not even a thing for me, light quadricycles are just non-existing here in Canada, although I wish it was different and find it very relevant for city cores or even short distance trips on suburban straods limited to 50 km/h anyways). It's cheap to buy and easy to charge at home, and your reporting of its interior space, fussless design and adequately responsive steering sounds better to my ear than winning a drag race with it. Who cares about longitudinal G-force in such a tiny thing ?

Handling and cornering is genuinely sports car like and on light dirt its excellent fun doing burnouts. Tip: driving economically ≠ driving slowly. Taking the speed from a descent to climb a hill is essential to get a range of 50 miles when driving at the speed limit (and above) and definitely possible. Also, driving 80km/h an hour feels like 200 in a normal car. So yeah..

The only way they could be legal in the US is to be three wheelers under the new autocycle laws that Elio Motors lobbied for to get helmet laws changed for enclosed motorbikes as being buckled in with a helmet is more dangerous as it adds weight to the unrestrained head (see HANS device). I like the center driving position of the Twizy of this group- gives it a tiny McLaren F1 feel. Lol.

Thus Citroën won't be able to offer a speed upgrade in France unless (like Renault did with the Tweezy which have two versions) they upgrade the Ami to be in compliance with regular car regulations. And given the price bracket of the AMI they may not do it at all. And if you're limited to 50 kph, why would you want a bigger power/range update? Now if regulations are different where you live, you may change the speed yourself without breaking the law or not get in trouble with insurances?

The Twizzy is the only quadricycle that can be seen operating quite acceptably fast on country roads in our hillside landscape. What I would prefer is an Ami that reaches about 50 Mph. It would be quite a good, minimized transport medium for short daily routes between a countryside home and the urban working place or park and ride. Presently one can observe nearly one new product like these every two months. Therefore, I would be happy, If you showed this format in a i.e. four monthly cycle to include new models.

I'm now 70 and thinking about what I need for personal transport to replace my present 12 year old Daihatsu Sirion (Simple, reliable (it is a Toyota after all) and cheap to run). For distances, there are hire cars and trains but it looks like I'll be using a Citroen Ami again everyday around the city. (Simple, reliable and cheap to run). Why should I pay £10s of thousands more to drag around empty seats to get me, and occasionally a passenger, dry to shops, doctor, dentist, vet (2 cats) etc. In the city, I have no reason to exceed 30 mph and crazy acceleration will only save me, at most, a few seconds on any journey. I think it would need to see another 10 mph in top speed to make one feel a little less like a sitting duck, but then perhaps that would change the overall dynamics vis a vis braking and handling so much that it would become a more expensive proposition. • I just picked up a used i-MiEV for 3k USD. It can hit interstate speeds albeit not for long since the battery begins to drain like there's no tomorrow if you do that but I'd say compared to performance of these I got a great deal on the price. Battery is only half degraded so it can still make it around 40 miles on a charge
