I remember in one of the season when pirlo was still active, Messi created way more chances and big chances on the pitch than pirlo the entire season. If we talk about playmaking awards like "IFHHS Best playmaker" (an anuual award given to the best playmaker of the year), Messi have the most currently with 5. Pirlo have none since Xavi and iniesta dominated the award from 2008 to 2013. Then from 2014 to 2022, messi dominated mostly by winning everything except 4 years in between when kroos won the award once, modric once, and Kdb 2 times (and he'll probably win another this year.KDB was fire this season). • It's NOT JUST THE SCANNING. It's the incredible speed he processes what he's actually seing, which allows him to scan left to right and back again, with just a swing of his head. He just "see" everything at a glance, and anyone who has played football at, at least, a semi professional level, knows how hard is to percieve things while moving at fast speed. This is why Messi has that "spider sense" level awareness that alloes him to dribble players cominh right from behind, and makes us think "how the hell did he knew a rival ws coming?". He not only scans a lot, he actually "see" things faster. His reflexes are out of chart.

    @gastonlanteri1147@gastonlanteri11473 ай бұрын
  • It's called football IQ. And this is why Messi tops Pele and Maradona. It's not just about scanning. Scanning just gives you the information on which to base your decision. The most important part is making the right decision (especially when you have more than one option), and then executing it. And unlike how the game was played 30 or 50 years ago, when the pace was much slower, all that usually has to happen in seconds, sometimes within a split second. As an example of what happens when you don't hone this skill, take Kolo Muani's last minute lost chance in the final. If he had not been hypnotized by the goalposts, and turned his head ever so slightly, he would've seen Mbappe open to his left. A simple touch would have done it. He also fails to see Emi Martinez coming straight at him with arms and legs wide open, and decides to whack it instead of trying a gentle chip. He's a young player and has much to learn. With Messi, this is a natural talent. Nobody taught him. He had it since he was a child. And by now he's perfected it. This is made evident in Argentina's second goal in the final, when he receives a ball from MacAllister with his back toward the French goal, and watches him run past him for the return pass. But he had already seen two French defenders behind him and knew that they would likely block the pass. Additionally, he knew that MacAllister would need a couple of seconds to gain the advantage. He also knew that Julian Alvarez was open by the side line with nobody marking him. So he touches the ball lightly in the air with his right foot and then flips it to Julian with his left, throwing off the French defenders. Julian makes the razor-sharp through pass, and MacAllister times his pass to Di María to perfection. IMHO, one of the best goals ever scored in a WC, certainly in this WC. For all the skills, and dribbling, and speed, and power that a player may have (and it's good to have those too), it's using those skills smartly that makes the difference. This video highlights that very effectively, and I'm glad someone has finally done it, because it explains Messi's 'walking' very well, and how it works to his advantage. Some people think that football is about running like a wild animal, when actually it's about running when you can make it count, and better yet, making the ball run to make it count.

    • Another good example of this was his assist to Molina vs Netherlands. People ask how he saw the run of Molina, did he have eyes at the back of his head? But in reality it is his game sense. His understanding of the game is what seperates him from other legendary football players. He KNEW Molina would make the run and where he would be to receive his pass. And to top off his brilliant iq, he has the insane skill to pull off the execution of such a pass. He is unarguably the greatest player ever to set foot on a football pitch and he demonstrated all his different colours at the world cup: long shots, clutch goals, out-of-the-world passes, vintage dribbling skills, composure (ice in the veins) and the power of desire and leadership. The perfect campaign to summarise Lionel Messi.

The best players always scan the field, take in all of that information, and then using their football IQ, they come to the best decision to achieve their goals, whether that goal is scoring, or setting up a teammate, etc. This is exactly what Isagi (the main character of Blue Lock) learns and uses it to absolutely annihilate teams.

It's shocking to me how many pro players are poor scanners. As you say, it's a skill that can be practiced and learned and, frankly, easier to learn than most physical skills. Any coach teaching young players should make this skill a priority.

His passes are the whispers of the wind, guiding the ball with the delicate touch of a poet's quill, each stroke a verse in a breathtaking symphony of creation. • Another good point is his walking is actually brilliant. Not because of the walking itself, its where he walks. He consistently occupies whichever space on the pitch is the most dangerous one, and slowly adjusts his position to remain in that as the players move. Towards the beginning of the game he drifts in and out of it. Part of why he often starts slow. As he gets the feel he pretty much lives there the rest of the match. They used ML to analyze player positioning a few years back and figure out if any players were especially good at it. Messi was better than everyone else by a country mile. The group after him where all brilliant midfield playmakers. Its the reason he picks and chooses his moments to help defensively. He's maintaining the dangerous position so he can spring after the attack. He's basically playing a playmaker they way some strikers play poacher. Its mental. So people talking players innovating. . . What position does Messi truly play? Whether hes a striker, midfielder or right winger, he pretty nuch drifts into whatever the weak point of the defense is and wreaks havoc as a creator, and then often turns around and becomes a striker, frequently finishing off the chance he created in the first place 4 passes ago. His location changes, but he basically plays his own position that no one else has any idea how to play yet. Someday people will catch up, just like how many players can replicate the skills and way Pele played now. But like Pele, we'll probably be old by the time anyone catches up.

  • Even without all the modern complex AI tech statistics, He is still the best player football has seen. What He does on a pitch is just unreal and he's been doing it for all his life. He was a footballing sensation when he was 4 in Rosario and it only got better. "I've played but with lots and lots of great players, but Leo is a freak" - Theirry Henry "Leo Messi is The God of Football" - Jose Mourinho

  • Annoying thing is when your teammates delay releasing the ball then all scanning goes to waste. Or when you have no idea when they will release the ball because they dribble unnecessarily.

  • In this video scanning is only mentioned in an offensive role. If you look at a player like Eriksen you will see he scans all the time when his team doesn't have the ball to block the opponents passing opportunities.
