When it comes to vision and decision making, Martin Odegaard is one of the best players in the world. He sees a pass before others and knows exactly what he's going to do with the ball before he receives it.
What's his secret: Scanning
We watched Odegaard for the entire Arsenal game v Fulham counting every single scan. This is what we found...

  • Anyone who enjoyed this video go and watch the highlights for Brighton vs arsenal this season to see the best example of odegaard doing this for his assist for martinellis goal. The execution and technique of the pass is amazing but if you slow the video down to 0.25x he scans once before xhaka even passes and then two critical scans to see if martinellis on the same page as him. It’s just phenomenal to look up twice as the balls travelling to you all whist adjusting your body to meet the ball perfectly for the perfect pass. As soon i started watching this video It reminded of that assist cos it’s such a good example of it from odegaard. Great video!!

  • Scanning by itself isn't a trait that can be measured by volume alone. The ability to track players in their mind, overall vision and understanding of the game all comes into play when understanding why and when a player Scans. Some players will scan loads and won't see much, some others will scan a couple times and be able to get enough info depending on what they're looking to do once they get the ball.

If i watch a jupiler pro league game, highest level in Belgium, i see a very few amount of players who scan for awareness. There is so much room for improvement and should be added at the basic principles of football.

  • This is really, really good. That said, I would encourage you to caveat comparisons. Tough comparing any two players as it's always relative to so many things. Is the opponent playing against a team sitting in? Is the player man marked? Even the conditions dictate this to some extent (the hotter it is the tempo will drop off and everyone typically has more time and space). Ultimately, in order to scan the frequency is typically dictated by time and space (as well as ability). So even analyzing Odegaard in one game compared to another could see a swing in results. That all said, again, this is fantastic and really glad to see you provide this so both players and coaches alike get some sense of the importance of scanning. Great job here.

    • Messi doesn't scan as much because he's confident in his reactive dribbling. His supreme dribbling ability does two things for him -- first, it keeps him from being dispossessed despite not scanning for potential tacklers, second, it encourages him to take the ball forward himself, which _then_ leads to critical pass opportunities by creating space for a teammate to make a run.

  • Any gunners in the comments to discuss the tactical significance of this? Over the last couple of games where we have struggled, I personally found that martin ended up taking a lot of touches, spending a lot of time on the ball, and not really progressing play very effectively. Based on this analysis, it seems like he is undergoing a bit of an evolution - he's playing lately as a tempo controlling passer and using his dribbling and runs as a second option, leaving his impact lacking in very static games. This is making me think that his role as the right side 8 is a bit wasted, because the rest of our offensive players are left side leaning. All he has is Saka, and if he prefers releasing the ball early, all the opponent has to do is block one fwd passing lane. Meanwhile on the left, you hav gabby, and jesus (and probably zinny wandering around) as an outlet for the right side 8 (usually xhaka). It feels like Odegaard is a fundamentally central player who ends up playing in the right half space because the system and his own workrate makes it barely possible. Any thoughts?

    @trainerred113@trainerred113 Жыл бұрын
    • This is making me think I want all our runners within short-passing range of him all the time! Give him as many options as possible to hit. This scanning is not something that is easy to teach - not to mention he is able to reach the crucial players that he locates with his scan more often than not (and he can even make the run himself if our runners drag the defense with them). It's up to the system to give this talent the opportunity to shine.

      @trainerred113@trainerred113 Жыл бұрын
    • I don't think there is much to do about this, and probably we shouldn't either. I want to mention that White (and sometimes even Partey) is often combining with Saka and Ödegaard, but I agree that they look quite isolated on the right. I think it all comes down to how our opponents set up defensively. In the Newcastle game we got a first glimpse of it and from the Everton defeat and onwards most teams have been staying very low, compact and slightly tilted to our right once we get the ball to about half way up the offensive half right flank, all in order to limit the workspace for 7 and 8. This is one of the key elements that enabled Trossard's assist hat-trick. With this distribution of about 3 players on the right and 4 on the left we have equal threat on both sides when in possession. In my view the only time Martin can have many threatening passing options is before opponents have the chance to return to their box. When he gets the ball slightly beyond the center line is where I think he shines the most and where the subject of this video is most convinient. Thats why I like when he gets to press the centre backs so he can get in position quickly once we gain possession. No doubt the best player in the league this season is Norwegian, but its a close call wether he wears red or blue.

      @Kalliniho@Kalliniho Жыл бұрын
    • @@Kalliniho that's a fair point and I think we agree they if defensive opponents set up with a focus on one side, it opens up chances on the other. I just have this dream of a system where we get partey and martin in perfect balance through the middle and a combo of an unstoppable dribbler and a tricky line breaking operator on each side. I think trossard and martinelli on the left are everything I could hope for. Maybe trossard moves over to give that option for saka and esr takes over that role for Gabby? As you said, our fortunes seem to have shifted from right to left recently and i feel like it's only a matter of time until defensive teams adapt. Is there a world in which we find the perfect balance or is it a matter of switching things up off the bench to catch opponents off guard...

      @trainerred113@trainerred113 Жыл бұрын
    • I don’t understand your analysis at all honestly. Very static games? All our games are static. We play for possession and most teams play low block against us. Recycling the ball until a chance presents itself is our most fundemental game plan. Ødegaard is the main creative point of this setup down the right, either dragging players away from Saka or playing the necessary supportive passes or the final through ball. We don’t have the rotational option on the right as we have on the left, where the striker switches with left wing and vice versa. This is why Xhaka is not dallying as much on the ball as Ødegaard, because we have more players on the left. Zinny also comes in to middle from the left while White stays much wider and also further back. Ødegaard therefore has a lot less support, but with his phenomenal passing foot, press resistance and ability to switch it over to the left, he doesn’t need that many options close to him. He’s also a great defensive attribute in our first press, which you can definitely see we are missing when Vieira is playing that position. I don’t get what you are trying to suggest saying that his position on the pitch is made “barely possible” by the system and his work rate. Barely doesn’t get you top of the league at the end of March.

      @Sloppern@Sloppern Жыл бұрын
    • If you've noticed, most of our creativity on the left actually comes from Zinchenko, and the one doing the "wandering around" is Xhaka. Essentially, both Zinny and Ødegaard have very similar playmaking styles, the only difference is that one comes from deep midfield while the other comes from the half spaces. I'll elaborate this further if you want me to. Also, Arteta's tactics during his first few months as Arsenal manager will give you a reason or two as to why your idea of a central 10 would possibly not work. The general idea is that Arsenal would start games with Özil as the central 10, but somehow, Özil would end up in the right half space during the attacking phase. If he were to stay central, not only would you lose a player in a crucial attacking position, but you'd also leave yourself vulnerable to counters. The thing is that a central 10 simply doesn't exist in today's game, honestly I can't name a team who plays such a system anymore.

  • How about scanning by central defenders? I see so many that seem blind to runs by forwards/outside backs at critical times by apparent ball-watching, and not scanning. How does scanning in football compare with other sports, say basketball or American football ?
