Coastal Sea Trout : Sea Trout on the fly : Winter Sea trout

Coastal sea trout is more synonymous with Denmark than the UK. However there is a small community of fly anglers who are targeting the species on the fly here in the UK.
Many thanks to @SouthsideFlyFishing for the drone shots and Jed Joseph and Whatnot Music for the soundtracks.

  • Great video! I'm heading up to applecross in June so will give this a go. Looks like you've gone out at low tide, is that the best time? Also is that dropper rig using a tippet ring before the point fly? Thank you!

    @georgeholmes6099@georgeholmes60992 ай бұрын
    • We started filming during low tide and Connor wasn't using a tippet ring. I'm not sure how long you'd get out of coated rings before corrosion sets in.

  • Really nice video. You can drop the music though. Would love to just hear the natural sounds, even just watching you fish with the coastal background sounds would be quite sufficient. Cheers and enjoy the time on the water!

  • It’s good see that sea trout are still there on the west coast of Scotland. I fish the rivers on the west coast of Wales but we have seen drastic declines in the numbers of returning fish in the past few years. I’m convinced this is due to parasitic viruses released from Scottish salmon farms. I know in the early years of salmon farming in Scotland the sea trout fishing was badly hit. Are you still experiencing those problems?

    @tonygordon2519@tonygordon25192 ай бұрын
    • 100% agreed!!!

      @FinLineFly@FinLineFly2 ай бұрын
    • Very much so, the farms continue having a major impact on the west coast, the inner and outer Hebrides and the Orkney and Shetland islands. The impact is not only limited to our beloved wild Salmon and Sea Trout harmed by lice and disease, but entire ecosystems, reefs and water quality impacted by disease, faeces, formaldehyde and algal blooms, not to mention danger to marine mammals and bird life. It is very sad and with the industry now one of Scotland’s biggest silent exports I fear it is going to be a long uphill battle to change the industry and remove open net cage farms. The general public don’t care what’s happening, I’ve learned this just from my own family and non-fishing friends.

    • your welsh seatrout numbers have fallin of the earth because one of the biggest portion of them move to strangford lough in the summer to feed while here they face a never ending run of pollution, a top heavy population of grey seals and cormorants and netters are still an issue

  • Again, thank you Tim. Is there a season for sea trout if you're angling for them in saltwater? And can I assume that keeping on the move is a thing with this kind of fishing?

    @davidstocker5736@davidstocker57362 ай бұрын
    • There is

      @andypeutherer4218@andypeutherer42182 ай бұрын
    • In one area we fished there was a season but further out in the estuary there isn't a close season. In some areas you're not permitted to fish for migratory salmonid on Sundays which is universal in freshwaters I believe.

      @flyfishinglondoner@flyfishinglondoner2 ай бұрын
    • I thought it was illegal to specifically target sea trout without written permission eg a PERMIT any where in Scotland .and I was lead to believe the season starts 10th feb and ends 31st oct on the west coast or am I wrong?

      @robertgreen5217@robertgreen52172 ай бұрын
    • @robertgreen5217 its the Clyde Estuary, you do need a permit

    @kemback1086@kemback10862 ай бұрын
    • Hi, February is still classed as winter in Scotland due to the cold climes, which is when this was filmed. The area I was fishing opens its season in early February.

  • Is this what is called "Voe" " fishing?

    @markhoffman9655@markhoffman96552 ай бұрын
    • Hi Mark, Voe fishing for Sea Trout is a term in the Orkney and Shetland islands. Sadly the farms are having a major impact there, however there are still some beautiful Sea Trout that can be caught, and the Brown Trout fishing is good too.
