  • Subscribe to Pals channel! youtube.com/@buddyandmikespal?si=b-KqEoXz0VKYVXnR The last time I groomed Pal he did not exhibit anxiety like today's groom, which is why we booked him a second appointment. Due to his stress I sent him home unfinished. The more he is subjected to grooming, the more accustomed he will become to it.

  • my dog, who's an American Alsatian came over to watch when she heard Pal whining, she kept cocking her head back & forth for like at least 2 minutes straight. She looks a lot like a german shepherd, but when I saw the claw trimming, I was like "wow, look how dainty his claws are" When I bring my girl in to the vet for claw trims the vet is always like "I gotta get the heavy duty clippers for this one". My favorite part of the video is when Pal goes out and sees his dad. He's so happy!!

    • Sounds like the American Shepherd is more like the Australian Shepherd. I have always had Alsations, which are German Shepherds. Lovely breed. They should be treated with more sensitivity than this one was. Gentle and a little at the time, until they do eventually get used to it. Not cruelly carrying on regardles. Just to get a longer video to show. Not good!

    @Hollyweeds@Hollyweeds5 ай бұрын
    • He would be brave while bathing, but they need to trust the person. If you got their trust, they'll let you do anything to them. Also the dog you were sitting was protecting you. They're bred not to leave your side. That's why it's extra stressful for them not to be with a person they trust. Pretty much a 24/7 dog, but a great one. Greetings from Germany lol

I grew up with German Shepherds because my parents breed them for over 10 years. I`ve been in countless dog show and I use to trained Germen Shepherds. Not only ours but for other owners too. For obedience, for protecting and attacking. They had to know all the signs and all the orders. by the age of 8 months. Protection training had a senior level over 8 month old to make them more aggressive. But because of the obedience training they always know how to behave in different situation. They were good members of the families and tough when they need to be. We trained their intelligence with games too. They were well balanced. They lived outside in a nice doghouse not in our home. And it was alright. These good boy slowly loosing all the benefits of the German Shepherds.

    • He PROBABLY could have used one, but for a first time interaction with an anxious dog, that is an AWFUL thing do attempt. The big issue is, they _simply don’t know you like that._ A scared dog may not be inherently aggressive, but if they get a sudden feeling of being trapped by you, as someone they don’t fully trust yet? Their behavior matches that of any cornered animal. Even humans do this. It’s reflexive, rather than aggressive imo, because they are typically trying to get away from the threat, rather than harm it. The harm is just that they don’t have the momentary capacity to understand the difference between a comforting touch, vs a harmful one. Imagine having a panic attack on the train, because you have no friends or family around. And suddenly, some stranger is sitting next to you and FORCING you to let them brush your hair. Idk about you, but if they then wrapped their arms around my neck??? I would no longer care if they were just crazy, it would IMMEDIATELY become a fight to get them off of me, and to get out of the train car, at ANY cost to them. Basically? Don’t hug scared doggos, unless they recognize you as a friend. Even then, sometimes rescue dogs will still retain trauma responses, that just makes it a bad move to attempt, ever. Instead those dogs tend to learn to physically lean into your chest (over a loooong time) for a hug, if they ever take enough steps to overcome that trauma. Ultimately. It takes a long time getting to know a dog, to make this judgment call for the first time. Even in younger dogs that aren’t puppies, and even _somewhat_ knowing them already. ANY dog has the capacity to snap at a person they’ve barely known for an hour, who tries to restrain them with a hug. But ESPECIALLY someone who is professionally putting them in an uncomfortable, but necessary, position. They don’t always have the capacity to understand why, or if their owner will ever even come back, unless they can escape. Sometimes they can be comforted by a soft consistent pressure on their sternums (the center of their chests) or the nape of their necks (where their skulls connect to their spines). Hence, why the videographers head wrap _did_ manage to calm him a bit. I only did a few years of animal behavior with dogs before I completely changed direction to cats, so I could be outdated in my knowledge.

A GSD needs "their person" around and they'll be all calm and relaxed. They're bred as 1 on 1 dogs and will always have one favorite among all the people they love. They just lose hair all year long. But regular brushing instead of petting works pretty well. Difficult if you don't want hair around.

  • I love how he howled during his "acid bath", had a moment to rest and recharge, then started up the howling again when confronted with the "air tube of death". Oh Pal, such a drama queen...you're definitely putting all the huskies to shame! 😂😂😂

  • I know exactly how he feels. When I was very small , probably 3, I had the same problem when taken to the barber shop. My dad would stand by my side and try to calm me down, while I screamed and cried thru the whole process. It was more like an execution ! All the man was doing was cutting my hair, but I think to me it was that he was cutting pieces of me off, especially when he used the machine to shave the back . Just like Buddy .By the time I got back home, one or two blocks away, I was a wreck ! = )

    • Interesting that you say that GSDs are known for their anxiety. We had one we raised from a pup and she wasn't anxious at all. We got one from a friend, and she didnt know his prior history, and he was very much so. What makes some so anxious? I thought they were bred for confidence.
