CM Punk in AEW: The Complete Story (Documentary)

CM Punk's return to professional wrestling in 2021 set the wrestling world ablaze and launched AEW from an alternative wrestling promotion to a bonafide threat in the wrestling space.
Tempting CM Punk back to wrestling was on the cards since his departure from WWE in 2014 and AEW, and Tony Khan, finally got Punk to put pen to paper after 7 and-a-half years.
While everything started red-hot and continued that way for several months, things went wildly off the rails coming up to the Double or Nothing pay-per-view in 2022. In the months that followed there were injuries, interim champions, and wrecked long-term plans.
Returning post-injury and defeating Jon Moxley at the All Out pay-per-view in 2022, CM Punk participated in a post-event media scrum where he vehemently criticised Colt Cabana, Kenny Omega, Matt & Nick Jackson, and Hangman Adam Page.
This led to a brawl between Omega, the Jacksons and Punk. All parties were suspended, and CM Punk was out injured months beyond his suspension.
In June 2023, CM Punk returned to All Elite Wrestling on a new weekly television show, AEW Collision, which was orchestrated specifically to tailor to Punk's vision.
In the following months were arguments, leaked stories, bans, removals and now infamous encounters between Jack Perry, CM Punk, Tony Khan and others at the All In pay-per-view at Wembley Stadium.
This is the complete version of CM Punk in AEW. There won't be another part and there likely won't be any CM Punk centered videos on this channel anymore following his incredible return to WWE.
This video is the combination of both 'CM Punk in AEW' videos on our channel. A few things have been refined & cleaned up, but largely unchanged. I never thought I would upload a video like this, which is largely recycled, to the channel but due to the circumstances I feel like this video is fitting.

CM Punk had the guts to call out Vince Mcmahan and made wrestling fun. Only Stone coldresembles cm punk. I LOVE how a wrestler doesn't need to be full of steroids, barely move at 45 or overdose :(. CM Punk and Daniel Bryan are the future. Someone tell steroids obsessed Vince that we don't care about fake bodies damaging bodies.

  • Something about the Hangman promo that doesn’t get talked about a lot is Tony Schiavone’s body language. There’s a point where you can tell he realizes Hangman is going off the agreed path because you can see him talking to the announcers table right after the “Worker’s rights” line. Then he has to go back to being next to Punk to talk to him like he was originally supposed to.

    • Also, of EVERYONE that was involved from beginning to end, Kenny Omega was the biggest victim of everything. His reputation is what helped start AEW, his name is what got them off the ground when he was champion, he was caught in the middle of defending his friends and defending the business, he was the one who tried to be the voice of reason, and he probably feels the worst because he probably feels like it couldn’t been prevented had he been more involved. I may not like all of Omega’s matches, and I may not like his on screen character all that much, but I came out of everything respecting him the most. I think he definitely was forced to play into all the BTE stuff against Punk after everything happened to keep appearances up, and was doing it for his friends, but I feel like there was a part of him that just wanted to move past it and look to the future.

  • The main difference is everyone else whether they liked Punk or not when they cut promos and were intense with each other, it was all stuff they were able to go over and they were able to work together. Even Eddie Kingston who says he doesn't like the guy personally, was able to put that aside and they were both able to work together to sell tickets and make money together. Because that's what wrestlers do, regardless of how they feel about one another personally. It wasn't till one of the Elite aka Kliq 2.0 feuded with Punk in Hangman Paige, that decided to go into business for himself AS CHAMPION... that screwed everything up. People like to quote Moxley's promo or Kingston's promo and go "See!? Look at them own Punk here!!" but they don't understand, all that was done with the knowledge of the other, all of it was constructed with one another. Whether it was ideas liked/disliked or what not, they were okayed. There's a trust there. When you go into business for yourself for a promo it's considered unprofessional, and THE GUY of your upstart company doing that is an issue. John Cena often talks about when he went into business for himself in his feud with The Rock, where he went off-script to take a jab at the Rock they didn't okay, and he did it because he felt he needed to in order to be on the same level as The Rock because he felt like hw still appeared miniscule in comparison rather than the best of his generation vs the best all-time in The Rock. But that They stayed professional after, and right after Wrestlemania, Cena apologized to The Rock's mother, and apologized to The Rock backstage and they squashed it and are now closer. But he looks back on it as a mistake and that he was wrong for it. That is the difference between people like The Elite and most other wrestlers. They don't apologize because they know they don't have to, and because Tony isn't going to do anything about it. Cena as THE GUY in the company knowing he had pull and Vince probably wasn't going to do anything to him, STILL went to both The Rock's family and himself to apologize and work things out after going into business for himself. This is something Paige couldn't do, this is something The Elite and their flunkies can't do. And that is why CM Punk is no longer there. They can take pot shots in the ring, and can make petty little references on live TV, but when it comes time to actually try to talk with the guy, they gotta put a time limit on it, or avoid it. And because Tony doesn't have the stones to say "No, you hash this out NOW, none of this petty BS." they get away with it. That's what separates other wrestlers from the likes of The Elite when it comes to attitude/temperament and entitlement. It's why the biggest draw of their company is now back in WWE now, and why AEW's 2nd biggest star vs their biggest star for the title couldn't even fill half an arena. The sad reality is, if Danielson or Adam Cole had been put over Hangman Paige and was the one to feud with Punk. He'd still be in AEW and none of this would have happened. Marinate on that.

Then, immediately is surprised that the EVP's were suspended and stripped of their titles. Claiming he didn't expect them to get a big punishment. They are literal Vice Presidents that took part in a 3v2 assault with employees. Regardless of the scrum, I think the suspension wasn't heavy enough.

Plays it out like it happened and lets the characters and story be interpreted how we see it, while tossing in flashbacks and appropriate music, brilliant!! That Punk/MJF feud was gold, especially that first showdown on the mic, elevated each other. Despite the BS in AEW, the biggest disappointment was TK not being able to use the IRL drama between Punk, the EVP's and their lackies. So much money and ratings were pissed away because of a lack of leadership from the boss, and too much ego/insecurity from the Bucks. What a feud that could have been.

When he walked away i was bummed but i also knew that he left because he was miserable and hurting. Fast forward to 2021 Im married, ive got kids and my wife and I started watching AEW from the very first press conference in ‘19 as a bonding thing she didnt ever watch wrestling and knew i was starting to dable in watching again and i had to explain who punk was and what the drama was about, i hyped MYSELF up about it thinking how awesome it is that STILL hes a megastar getting his name chanted without ever saying a word or showing up at all. I was so excited to see the return and the rise of a megastar for this new company that i liked more than WWE, and It just went down the drain. Im still a Punk fan, i’ll probably watch wwe here and there to see what he does and who he does it with, but EVERYONE in this situation dropped the ball. TK couldve made so much money if he acted like an owner and put the brakes on talent start shit with other talent. Now all of that money is going to be made for the OTHER company, AEW already dropped ratings FAST, dropped attendance FAST, now they lost their biggest star FAST, WWE is on a roll, everything is about to get alot more interesting.

  • I wish it had gone better, there were so many talents there that could have done with a rub from Punk. It could have turned into a place like what Punk described ROH as, 'a place where people could come work, get paid, learn their craft and love professional wrestling'. He shouldn't have got into the brawl or did what he did at the scrum but they knew what they were getting, they knew his history and that he didn't suffer fools but the elite still chose to poke that bear. I put a fair bit of the blame on Tony too, he could have absolutely done more to stop it but not only that, put measures in place to ensure his company was better run, but he didn't and now he's paying the price for it. He actually enabled something to happen that we never thought would.

Bucks cancel meeting last second, AEW gives punk a non-working number for getting a ride to wimbly(Bucks guy did it, laughed about it on Twitter then deleted everything when it got pointed at), and being asked to get involved with Jack Perry in the first place. He didn't talk to Jack about the windshield out of his own wanting too. Production asked because Jack wouldn't listen to them. So yeah, imo, Wembley was obviously a set up to piss punk off so Tony could have the "Feared for his life" line

    • @@vampirascoffin870 who knows, we know for sure The Bucks wanted him gone. So much so that they did a friggen victory lap around the ring the night he was fired. It's like you idiots, you're basically admitting that what Tony tried to deny was true. You did leak against Punk to the sheets, and you did make things so difficult for him in AEW that he ultimately got fired. It makes one wonder, just how many other exits did they have something to do with? Cody's for instance. We'll probably never know. What's funny though, is the stupid idiots have backed themselves in a corner now. What reputable promotion would take them on after the trouble they've caused? So really it's AEW or back to the indies. Brawl Out to me, was a key chance to change things. Strip The Elite of their EVP status, hire a booker and head of talent relations to restore order, preferably convince JR to do it, and put a system in place to ensure this never happens again. Ideally one where there's a locker room leader. But they didn't. Instead Tony had his biggest star cow-tow to The Elite's demands, and we saw what happened.

      @aidanthomas2510@aidanthomas25105 ай бұрын
    • @@Roric_The_Red I think we can say for certain The Elite conspired to get him fired. What's not known is whether or not Tony & the higher up's did as well. If they did, them putting so many legal barriers in place to stop people finding out would make sense. Your theory is credible. And if it's true, that makes Tony just as bad as The Elite and probably confirms why he never stripped them of their EVP status, he wanted them there all along (well he probably did regardless). It probably also all but confirms that they used Punk to get ratings and ticket sales for Wembley to the level they needed, and soon as they didn't need him, see ya. If that is true, then Tony is not only the indie mark everyone says he is, but also just as spiteful and vindictive as The Elite. He didn't want the change everyone was calling for, because this is what he's wanted AEW to be all along. It's stupid though, they paid him millions of dollars to stay home only to then fire him. I guess Tony really does want to be the new WCW, because he's going down the exact same path they did.

    • Cody had a perfect opportunity to turn heel, go back on his word not to challenge for the AEW belt and use his power to get a title shot. He was already getting booed as it was. Shame he didn’t lean into that.

  • I sincerely love this documentary!! The only suggestion i would make is to shorten a couple of the blackout/chapter sequences as some are noticeably literally seconds too long but that aside the 2+ hours watching it was a pleasure as, you're clearly very talented & have a bright future ahead of you.

    @bobbyneeds@bobbyneeds5 ай бұрын
    • This is intentional! I appreciate the feedback! They’re intervals of 3, 5 or 8 seconds. Some blackouts are intentionally longer to section the video better. For example, after the MJF feud I put an 8 second blackout to symbolise the ending of that sequence and the start of the new one. So it isn’t continuous on purpose. It’s meant to be in blocks. Hope that explanation makes sense!

  • Thank you for this awesome documentary!! It is finally nice to see one where both sides of the story are being told without bias, I am and will always be a Punk supporter but even I admit that sometimes his ego gets in the way of himself. Regardless of that, the beginning of this documentary perfectly encapsulates what he was up against from the beginning and I think the young bucks, hangman, jack perry were all children, and as realistic as Eddie's promo was and some underlying truth with what he was speaking he is grown enough to later on state how he has no problems with CM Punk, while the EVPs and their followers just lost one of their biggest draws and Tony struggles with buy 1 get 1 ticket sales and let's see how long he can last with that.... just saying...

  • I think the Eddie Kingston part is the most poignant. You had a bunch of guys who can’t draw a dime outside of the indies who view themselves as big “stars”. They have a higher opinion of themselves than any of the fans do. You finally get a billionaire who’s willing to start a company that you think you’re going to be the “star” of. Only to have him bring in a bigger star than you. This guy gets more attention then you, is a bigger star then you, sales more pay per views and creates more ratings then you do, and generates alot more interest in your product then you ever will. Instead of taking the challenge of saying “you know what, this guy is going to bring in a lot of eye balls. This is a good chance to show some of those new eye balls what I can do, and create some new fans from this extra attention”. Instead they get jealous and act petty. It’s the reason why a guy like LA knight is a huge star, and the young bucks, Eddie kingstons, and Hangman Pages of the world never will be. Instead of looking at every piece of adversity as a challenge, and taking it as an opportunity to prove to everyone else that you are what you believe you are. A star. You blame everyone else and make excuses. Look, I know punk is probably an asshole. Not a lot of people can handle brutal honesty. The truth is a blow to their ego. But no one can dispute that punk is a huge star. He left wrestling for years, shoot he left the WWE for almost 10 years. But people still chanted his name, and when he came back it was immediately a huge boom to business. Love him or hate him, Phil brooks is the real deal. And he lives rent free in the “elites” head all day long

Any jackass who is remotely intelligent can read between the lines and say hey wait a minute is adam page pissed that hes gonna lose the title to punk because punk is a bigger star? Seems that way. Because its good for BUSINESS and it was. Clearly. But page wasnt playing that game. He took it personal
