OVERRATED! Watches Everyone Loves But We Don't: Omega Speedmaster, Tudor Black Bay + Your Picks

Today I'm joined by engineer turned watch entrepreneur Marc Frankel of Long Island Watch for a brand new #WatchTalk episode where we discuss watches that everyone loves but we don't. In this video we share our personal choices in this category including the Omega Speedmaster and the Tudor Black Bay. We analyze what has caused them to become overrated and overhyped, and we read out some of your comments and nominations for watches you believe have been exalted and promoted far beyond the level they deserve. From the Tissot PRX and the Swatch Moonswatch to the Audemars Piguet Royal Oak and the Rolex Submariner, we cover a lot of brands and models. What's a watch that everyone else seems to love but you don't? Please share in the comments!

A bit like the brand positioning of Audi>VW>Seat>Skoda (brands in same group). I'm with the commenter above, Orient is more appropriate to be described as the poor man's Seiko.

  • I find it funny that Tudor is sometimes referred to as the "poor man's watch". But the reality is, when you consider wages, inflation, etc.....the price now days to get into a Black Bay is around the same cost of what someone would've paid 25-30 years ago for a Rolex Submariner. So, in my opinion, Tudor is not really a poor man's watch. Heck, the average person on the street would laugh at us watch geeks if they knew what we spend on some of these watches, such as an Omega or Tudor, let alone the insane prices of Rolex now days!

  • Hey there! Thanks a lot for this great video and gotta say, I totally get where you're coming from about the Omega Speedmaster being overhyped. But you know what? Sometimes something's popularity doesn't take away from its beauty, right? I mean, I've been eyeing the Omega Speedmaster "Reduced" (Ref. 3539.50.00) for quite some time now. Sure, it's not the "Professional" version, but it has its perks that really speak to me: 1. It's got a smaller 39mm diameter, which is perfect for my smaller wrist size. 2. Having an automatic movement instead of just hand-winding makes it way more practical for everyday wear. 3. With an ETA movement, maintenance is easier and cheaper compared to an "in-house" movement. 4. Let's not forget about the price point, which definitely makes it more accessible. 5. And the improved water resistance of 50 ATM is definitely a bonus. So yeah, while some may call it overrated, I see it as a gem that's worth saving up for. Can't wait to add it to my collection within the next year! Cheers!

  • Fun video, guys. After jumping into watches for real 6 months ago, I’ve begun to realize my favorites are the quirky afordables. I don’t have any upper high ends, just three as I see it. Ball Engineer II Marvellight, Ball Hydrocarbon Deepquest, (great just in case I drop into 9000 foot seas!), and an Alpina SeaStrong 300 Heritage , such a beautiful watch. All three are amazing, but I find I wear and enjoy more so my two Vostok Amphibias, or Timex Navi XL auto or super cool Seiko Recraft Snkn37 on a 24 mill bracelet! I have just under a dozen watches, and my favorites seem to all be under $350. I think part of it is a mindset that says , “save the exspensive ones for occasions “, I’m working on breaking out of that barrier, but there’s something more to it. There is just something about affordable cool watches that is just fucking super cool! I look forward to enjoying my new found hobby for many years to come.

Now, I just love it because I am very picky about watch hands, they have to be awesome and eccentric and when you compare the snow flake hands to the mercedes hands, the snow flake is the much cooler hand than the mercedes. The mercedes hands was mentioned by a youtuber that it was evolved from cathedral hands and it clicked, I now see the mercedes hands as out dated. However, the mercedes hands on the current explorer 2 gen have that snow flake cool 70's vibes. So, Black bay all day for me.

Once upon a time sure when Tudor watches were cheaper copies of Rolex (funny though that those old Tudors like TGV's are highly sought after now) but now, with the Black Bay line and watches like the Pelagos, they've come into their own. I could've bought a modern Sub but I think the BB 58 is a nicer looking watch with its vintage vibes, so I went with it instead. Now, if Rolex went back to older Sub designs, then I _might_ have to agree with Marc but even then, Tudor is still more bang for the buck. People are too hung up on a logo.

If I wanted a Rolex but couldn't afford it and settled for a similarly designed Tudor, then that would certainly fall under a "poor man's" choice. However, if one is buying a Tudor simply because they see it as a better value proposition while still being able to afford a Rolex or maybe they just have no interest in Rolex, then I'd say the "poor man's" factor no longer applies. It boils down to the motivation of the buyer.

My second favorite is my Longines Hydroconquest GMT. I also have two Long Island watches and love them both. One is the Baiting Hollow skeleton watch, which I feel is the most useful skeleton watch ever and is very legible since I had the original hands replaced with a set of black hands. I don't feel that any watch is overrated as long as people are willing to pay the price. The rating is given by the public perception and sales volume. If it is overrated, then sales would dry up.

  • What got me into watches in the first place was the longevity and serviceability of timepieces. These little mechanical devices that fit on our wrists will out live us, our kids, and beyond. We as a species don't make anything else that lasts that long anymore. So when Tissot made the powermatic 80 and charged $750 for a watch with a plastic escapement, the part of the watch that needs the most resistance to wear and tear, and without the ability to regulate it easily, it flew in the face of everything I love about these mechanical timekeepers and shows what kind of company Tissot is to me. You will see watches from many other companies in working order in 50+ years, but I think you will have a hard time finding a PRX that stands the test of time.

      @J0hnny8ravo@J0hnny8ravoАй бұрын
    • Spreading myths lol. The powermatic absolutely can be regulated. Just because you can't do it doesn't mean an actual watchmaker can't. They literally use the same regulation method as Rolex and other high end brands. They are also totally servicable, you can swap every single part - it's not a sistem51. Yes, the service dept. will swap the movement to save time but they don't bin them, they refurb them and put in other watches. Tudor does the exact same thing for quick turnaround, as do many other brands and independent watchmakers when it comes to cheaper watches. No one actually repairs any movements under $1000+, they are all swapped for new ones. You may get a clean and lube, but I'd love you to film yourself asking a watchmaker to repair (not swap) a broken movement in a $500 Seiko so we can all see them laugh you out the door. Your "50+ years" comment is hilarious. Not a single watch in Tissot's price range will have its original working movement inside it in 50 years, regardless of ecapement material, because the maths simply ain't mathing. No one will spend the required money to keep the original movement going that long on anything below a Rolex and even that is questionable, maybe I should say anything below Patek. If anything, the plastic escapement powermatics will survive longer without servce than their metal shaving-filled counterparts.

And with the new space challenges today a whole new generation is discovering it. That’s why the one with caliber 3861 is so great. It’s far more accurate and looks crisp. Also the design is really inspiring. What watch still looks so good after so many decades? And the latest Snoopy edition (blue) with the animation on the back is really fun and beautiful. The thing is however that the cost has risen immensely… I think that scares some people of. It used to be the one iconic watch everyone could own. My two cents 😎

I acknowledge that a modern mechanical watch is jewelry, and embrace it. My favorite Rolex is my TT DJ Wimbledon, my favorite brands are Alexander shorokhoff and Itai noy. The one comment I would make, is that I buy a watch to wear and like. Whether it becomes over hyped after purchase, is over hyped before, or is a minority, doesn't really concern me. For example my favorite "below the radar - hide in the shadows" watch is the Pelagos 39mm, which I can pull on anytime, with a t-shirt, not care about setting the date, and practically not feel during the day. The fact it's a Tudor, the brand is insulted by some as a poor mans Rolex, or over hyped by others, does not concern me. I can't see any competition for the Pelogos for what it does in titanium. Slightly diverted at the moment by a love affair with Hasselblad .....

The price was 800 €, 2-3 times cheaper then a Rolex. I loved the design of the Omegas and I loved my Omega. 28 years later I sold my entire watch collection, including that Seamaster Professional (because I was in fear that the electronic movement once is going to break down), different vintage Seamasters, vintage IWCs, vintage Rolexes etc. I now own only a vintage Omega Speedmaster Day-Date/Mk 40 and a Submariner 14060M…my grail watches. I have to say that all modern Omegas are ocerpriced and overrated. I would never pay 10k for a steel Omega, same price like a Rolex. Omega was allways 2-3 times cheaper then a Rolex. Same with Breitling, Longines, Tag Heuer etc. Prices going crazy with those brands.

The gilt bezel gives the 58 a warm feel, the red triangle offers a pop of color paying homage to the Rolex Big Crown, the chunky coin edge crown is so satisfying to wind with a refined matching coin edge bezel and I love the snow flake seconds hand. It’s different from the more traditional lollipop style. By the way, 39 mm is on the smaller side for a modern sized sports watch. I think anything smaller is playing vintage territory.

Their most popular watch, BlackBay, uses ETA movement.... like a million other brands. Literally NOTHING unique or special about Tudor. • Good topic, thanks again for great morning vid. PS: I predict gold/bronze will have an uptick this year. No reason tho, except that I bought a gold/bronze diver with black bezel this week and am loving it. I am a huge trendsetter...........haha. Actually I am just huge. 😅

    @edo7052@edo7052Ай бұрын
    • Indeed. Life is a contradiction, I am a walking one, living in a world moving thousands of miles per hour through space, while I seem to be standing still, loving a dated largely inaccurate mechanical technology on my wrist, replying to a comment online via digital machine using a 5th century language. Great point, but now my head slightly hurts, thank you. 🤣😅🙏 Best regards, TGV P.s. I adore both the Speedy (in most forms) and the Back Bay, dare I say, unequivocally pure class, both classic, great taste, both grail worthy, amazing heritage, design, etc, and I welcome/congratulate anyone to love and enjoy them. But that does not mean they are not overrated or over hyped. A watch can be great and overrated at the same time, maybe that is the ultimate contraction here? 🤔

    • Haven't watched the video yet, but my pick would be 'the Moonwatch'. While it both deserves its iconic status and probably overplays it a bit, my main gripe is how it overshadows all the other Speedmasters - especially considering that the SPEEDmaster is a racing chronograph first and foremost, not a 'space watch'. And purely in terms of aesthetics, I actually prefer a lot of the watches from other model lines ('57, First Omega in Space, Racing, Date, Dark Side of the Moon, Grey Side of the Moon, etc.). _The_ Moonwatch almost looks a bit bland in comparison. It's all matte black with a bit of white and has a pretty flat looking dial without a lot of details. That's why I, after having first considered it and then the FOiS, ended up with a grey sunburst dialed Speedmaster Date with bordered subdials and a bit of red text. It might not be as 'sought after' or hold its value as well as 'the Moonwatch', but I just find it to be much better looking.

  • The Speedmaster is the embodiment of overhype. The engraved case back basically saying "hey! look at me! I went on the moon 50+years ago, and you should bend the knee before my self-proclaimed might" is such a turn off. I don't understand how any adult person can wear this. It's like wearing a 7000$ Captain America tee shirt, hoping that people will think the tee shirt gave you some of his powers. Last, the "look at my watch, it went to the moon" thing is utterly ridiculous. Your watch didn't go to the moon. You bought it in a mall. Rant over. Cool video 🙂

    • But there are many watches that could be similarly criticised. Submariner - do you go diving? FXD - are you a navy seal? Fleiger - are you a pilot? Tag Monaco - do you race cars? I really think the speedmaster is the most iconic chronograph. I don’t own one but I think it’s cool. I also think the Apollo missions were amazing. You’ve maybe hit a sore point as I’m currently drifting towards getting a CWC even although I’ve never been in the military. I am a bit worried about the walter mitty aspect 😅

  • I love my blue Black Bay 58, with its imperfections such as the rivets on the bracelet and the mishmash of snowflake hands with round hour indexes. The only thing that I really dislike about it is the hipsters making it overhyped, which I think generally is what gets us all to like certain watches less overtime eventhough we initially loved them. I am hoping in a couple years they will have forgotten about it and moved onto something else, so that I can proudly wear it without being assimilated to them. That said, the Pelagos is a fantastic watch too, I would have probably taken one if it wasn't for my rather thin wrist making it wear a tiny bit too large for my liking. That's why I only got eyes for the Pelagos 39 in that range.
