.............................................................
This is the new Toyota Yaris!
Toyota’s cheap & cheerful entry-level car has had a full upgrade for 2020. Not only have both the exterior and interior had a refresh, but there are changes to be found under the bonnet too… The Yaris has gone 100% hybrid only! As a result, there’s only one engine to pick from, a 1.5-litre petrol that’s connected to an electric motor.
Of course, going hybrid is no bad thing, and when the entry-level edition starts from under £20,000, the price isn’t too bad either! But does the Yaris have what it takes to compete with the all-new (and very stylish!) Peugeot 208? Or could it upset class-leaders like the Ford Fiesta or VW Polo? There’s only one way to find out… Kick back and join Mat for this all-new in-depth review!

  • I use to drive (still occasionally take it out) the 2015 Yaris Hybrid and I promise you is MUCH better than what you think: -very fast acceleration -precise steering round corners - not too bad 111mph top speed - over 3 years ownership in the family average MPG: 55.9mpg in winter and 60.1mpg in summer -great sound system clear and loud -extremely reliable -can hold its own in a traffic light race against cars it has no business competing against I can promise you that (116i, A180, 1.6 A3) 100% recommended it to a young driver or any other age group.

  • Looks much better in person. I saw a grey and a white one and they looked good. Also, maybe others have mentioned this, but to easily get near the claimed fuel economy you always accelerate using the petrol engine and then lay of the gas pedal and coast using the electric motor. I drive it for 2 months and I have to admit that it's a fuel (and money) saver. Very nice car to drive in the city, very nice exterior design. Is there any other that has better "numbers" in all that? You can not have everything at a high level i get that but i think that these are the things that you should consider before buying a car. The question is, the higher price for the hybrid does a lot of gasoline for the 1.0! In my contry the diference is almost 4500€. The performance is the same or the hybrid is eay better? • Toyota Hybrids 101: Never leave it in Neutral - else it can't charge the Hybrid battery. The 12V battery is there to turn the computer on only which in turn controls the hybrid battery. I've had Toyota Hybrids for 14 years and have never had the 12V battery ever go flat or the car fail to start. In fact I got a new Yaris Hybrid as a loan car yesterday while my Prius was in for service and it was fantastically nippy. I love what Toyota have finally done with their Hybrid system. The CVT groaning is finally gone. This thing shifts when you put your foot down. I really enjoyed driving it and felt sad having to take it back!

  • Curious about that dead battery. I've never experienced that owning a hybrid, the engine normally kicks on before then. I'm guessing you left the vehicle in accessory mode for a long time? I bet the battery was actually defective even then. Reseting your arm in the window sill is no longer recommended because side airbags will blow it away. It's kind of funny you never compare to the Jazz. I think the Yaris loses on practicality and looks, but that economy is excellent.

  • Great review Matt as always, one thing though im betting when you drained the Yaris of battery you was parked up in N (Neutral) with the ignition switched on because when in N the hybrid system wont monitor its battery levels and will then run them flat (Toyota handbook even states never to leave it in N always P (Park) or D (Drive) with hold funtion activated if inside the vehicle). The false floor is also an optional extra but can be ordered as my old man did when he ordered his Design (in Galactic Blue)

  • Hi CarWow, Are you going to do an updated review on the new Yaris (130bhp)?

    @burnoutsam@burnoutsam3 ай бұрын
  • You see ⬇️ what I wrote almost a year ago... but: Eleven months ago we were very enthusiastic about the new Yaris Hybrid and planned to replace our then four and a half year old Yaris Hybrid with this new one in the summer. This choice seemed like a no-brainer! Until we had a proper look in the showroom at our dealer and found out that the new Yaris is not exactly a practical car. Really a pity because we really were satisfied with our Yaris and liked what the new one looked like. Shown here (from 6:05), is that the rear doors open "nice and wide" according to Matt but I absolutely disagree. They only open very limited. I would say a crack... And: with the driver seat arranged for me (6 ft., long legs) and when I squeezed myself in through that crack, I'm poking in the front seat with my knees.... Don't even think about installing a child seat through those doors and let's better not talk about getting a kid in that chair... 😠 We also had already thought of the new Honda Jazz Hybrid in the back of our minds and also watched the video, in which Matt tested the Jazz. Among other things, we compared the space in the back of the Yaris in this video with what it looks like in the Jazz in this video: kzhead.info/sun/ddhtlpt-iZeuoY0/bejne.html (from 5: 03) But maybe better watch from beginning till the end...😉 Than we decided to take both for an extensive test drive. Anyone who is faced with that choice should do so! And discover that good looks don't mean "the best". Here the winner was clearly the Jazz: quieter, more comfortable, much better visibility, more space and "sense of space" because of the light interior and the big windows. Next to this the materials in the interior of the Jazz also gave a better "quality impression". And let's better not talk about how practical the Jazz is compared to the Yaris.... If you compare the reviews, it is 100% clear that they confirm what we discovered during the test drives. And next to what I wrote here we concluded that of these two small hybrids, only the Jazz is suitable as a family car, the Yaris (unfortunately) hardly or better: not! You can probably guess which car now is the successor of our Yaris... Correct!!! For more than 5 months we have been driving with great pleasure and satisfaction in that spacious, comfortable and economical Jazz!

  • Hey Matt, Thanks for the review, one of my best friends was waiting for it, now he can know. In my opinion, the exterior has an interesting design. Looks cool and is still distinguishable as a Yaris. The quality of the metal is questionable 🤔. The interior has an OK design and does not stir my soul as the exterior. I love the tech that comes as standard throughout the range, something that I quite agree other manufacturers could learn from (BMW, MERCEDES, VW, OTHER MANUFACTURERS are you LISTENING?) Its a car I feel I would love to test drive.
