This is the new Volkswagen Polo!
Well, we say new, but it’s more ‘updated’ than all new. The question is, can the Polo stand out against competitors like the Ford Fiesta, Audi A1 & SEAT Ibiza? Well, it’s time to find out!
Let’s start off with the design. And let’s face it, even if it’s been updated, it’s still instantly recognisable as a Polo. In terms of what’s new compared to the old edition, well at the back you’ll find some new taillights and a redesigned rear bumper, while upfront you’ve got yet another redesigned bumper, along with a daytime running light strip!
The updates don’t end there, though! Once you take a step inside, you’ll find an all-new steering wheel, coupled with a new climate control system (the same as found in the ID.3) and a digital driving display as standing!
When it comes to performance, the range-topper (without upgrading to the Polo GTI) comes equipped with a 1-litre turbo petrol that can deliver 110hp.
So what do you think - does it warrant the £18,000 starting price? And should you really spend that much when there are so many other small hatchbacks available at the moment? You’ll have to stick with Mat for this all-new in-depth review to find out!

  • I have now taken delivery of a Kings Red Polo Style 94bhp manual. To add to your comments, I would say, overall I am very happy, the build quality is better than my Peugeot. The car is quiet and easy to drive but the gear change is very notchy. The clutch is gentle and Hill Assist works well, but I find the Lane Keeping Assist really annoying and have turned that off. I like the digital Climatronic controls but they take some working out and I still haven't worked out how to just demist the windscreen. The ride is nice (on 17in wheels) and I am averaging about 58mpg on mainly 'B' roads (car now done 500m). Everything works well but there is an annoying rattle behind the infotainment screen which I may have to get sorted. So far, although the Bluetooth takes calls OK it is refusing to download my contact list and, likewise, refuses to connect to Android Auto (will have to get salesman's help I think). Generally the digital dashboard Pro looks good and works well but I am still exploring the various information available although I prefer the 'classic dials'. I ordered various accessories (in February) including mudflaps, wind deflectors, spare wheel and rubber mats - to date, none of these have been delivered or fitted. Tightened them up and it cured the problem! The next rattle was the drivers door pocket/Storage bin cured that by inserting a rubber washer! The same with the centre console rattle another rubber washer! Sadly the dash rattle could not be fixed! ( The car had more rattles than a baby's pram )The clutch bite was high and made pulling off hard! The cabin noise was loud ( road noise ) I covered 2600 miles but sadly found the car difficult to live with! Shame as the dash layout was superb! I now own a new MK4 Fabia which is a much better drive and ok no soft touch plastics but the drive makes up for it! I sadly felt the Polo was overrated and not nice to drive!

  • It's a competent car, for sure. Here in Brazil, the car is a little bit different in terms of powertrain: we use the 200TSI (1.0L Turbo Petrol and Ethanol, with 116hp to 128hp, with a 6 speed torque converter automatic gear box). The main difference, however, is the quality of internal materials: here, we got only rigid and scratchy plastics, unfortunately. Oh, we don't get the same safety package as well. Oh, another thing: while in the UK you can get a Polo from 18.000 Pounds (your minimum wage is about 1500/month), here the entry level Polo starts from 70.000 Reais (our minimum wage is 1.100/month). • Just rented one, though arguably in the basic version of 1.0 TSI manual, and it was rubbish. I am an ex owner of Polo the version of early 2000s which was arguably a great car and indeed one that made you doubt you would ever need to upgrade to Gold. Its 1400cc gasoline engine with a mere 75hp (though real ones were more close to 85 than 75) was more than enough and would propel the car, maybe not fast enough but satisfactorily. There was a 100hp version of the same engine and I drove it once, it was quite faster and more enjoyable. It was a neaty little car, practical and fun to drive even if the driving was not as good as of my brother's 206 Peugeot which excelled both inside the city as well as on the highway. But what happened them? Why this current Polo is so crappy? The handling was worse than the Polo of early 2000s. The feeling was of a cheap car. The alledged 95hp were not there anywhere to be seen or felt, the car was really struggling. And I have rented the 208, superb car, I have rented the Renault Clio, superb again, I have rented the KIA Rio, arguably in its GT version, and it was fun to drive. But the Polo? No. Not there up with the best. It looked and felt like a second rate car from the 90s. It could not compare to the early 2000s Polo for sure. Something happened at VW lately, there is no doubt about it. They have been wasting too much money on meaningless projects forgetting about what made great their firm.

  • It's mad to see how much the rest of the world has caught up to German cars in this price range. I just look at my options and the prices and the only reason I would go for one is the name. Obviously upper market they're still class but up to 33k I wouldn't go for one just because I can get a lot more for my money elsewhere especially pcp deals

  • Does the 3 cylinder engine run like its misfiring similar to the old polo models or is it smooth on idle ?

  • Interesting review. A classy small car, definitely looks a step up from its VAG siblings, the Fabia and Ibiza. I hate those touch controls for the climate - that's not progress, it's cost cutting. Also, who cares about the load bay if you can get a decent spec upgraded stereo - a "must have" for me! No standard USB though - that would cost me at least an extra £200, to get a music source that would be compatible with a usb-c. That's just me though! I think I'd just buy a used Golf Mk 7.5, rather than a Polo

    • @@samirav1137 I like the 3 cylinder engine - nice "rasp" to it. Same as the Up! GTi. Depends on the model - the GTi is just a detuned 2.0 TSI E888

    • @@der4815162342 I actually prefer mine as well…I have it in deep pearl black with the 16” Merano wheels and I love it…but I’m on the PCP deal so I get a new car every 3 years so I got the 22 polo style in deep black pearl with all the gadgets…only cost me an extra €16 per month so it was a no brainier really.

  • I bought Polo like that (but reef blue metallic color ). It's quite good and comfortable car. Android Auto and all systems also works well. But for now there is a huge problem with spare parts. Recently someone hit my car and destroyed it's front. Repair is estimated about 6k € - new hood, bumper headlights ect. Covered by insurance of course. But parts for this model are unavaiable till spring 2022. So i got a new vechicle, but it's immobilized at car service for next few months...
