Never there
You're never there
You're never ever, ever, ever there
Hey!
#CAKE #NeverThere #OfficialHDVideo #HD #Remastered #ProlongingTheMagic #Rock
Over 2 decades later and this song still kicks so much ass.
...JUST HEARD IT F T 1ST TIME...MY LONG DISTANCE PAPI JUST SHARED...
indeed
Mmmmhm
FOR REAL
This song goes the distance
The bass riff in this song alone deserves to be in the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame.
Never realized how much the bass carries their songs.
I have a cat named cake and this describes our relationship perfectly
Cake as in Fiona and Cake?
🤣
Golden comment
Lmao
😹😹
This song is 25 years old and if it dropped today I’m 100% sure it would be all over. This band was so far ahead of its time it’s unreal. Go back and listen to their music and tell me I’m wrong
That this song is 25 yrs old is mind-blowing.
@@maverick6899 :
As a 25 year old I completely agree.
They were waaaaaay ahead of their time. Underrated band by far
"ahead of it's time" implies music is better now than it used to be. No.
straight up one of the most underrated bands of all time
Damn Straight!!!!
How are they "underrated"? They were massively popular and had two platinum albums.
So? Still not appreciated as much as they should be.
can't we all just get along even the fat people
Eh, maybe if you didn't go to high school in the late 90s--Cake was definitely not underrated in my experience, between Fashion Nugget and Prolonging the Magic (especially the latter) I heard and saw references to Cake constantly. I was in college when Comfort Eagle came out, and while it seemed less beloved it's one of my favorites.
I feel like this band would do much better today than several years ago
Yes
I feel like they did fine, and largely did as well as they did because it was the 90s, and that you’re fucking deluded if you think that they would have fit in better during today’s tepid rock scene.
Blackest Night Batman easy Batman
xAcidity Commenting about somebody’s name? What are you, twelve?
with all the radical feminists and sjw zealots, I'd think otherwise. Would still love the shit out of their music though.
Man, this was such a massive hit here in Brazil! Every club played this song. Awesome!
muito bom, eu sou de los estados unidos e tambem amo isso canção
Fez muito sucesso mesmo. Eu era pequena mas lembro de ficar no só esperando a música tocar. Amo essa música até hoje❤
Cake's just at that unattainable level of cool.
Don't short change yourself mate self belief savvy👍
This is one of the greatest songs of the 90s
I think you may be right friend.
Yes it is!
I " m THERE ??😊😊 2:00 ❤
No matter what we do we are always there !!
The deadpan delivery juxtaposed with the smooth funk is timeless.
Kudos on the verbiage🎉😮🤘🏽
the bassist for Cake used to give my brother guitar lessons haha. such a nice dude, he let me watch their lessons and sometimes play along. i remember he gave a me a blue oyster cult and black sabbath cd! i was only like 8! but i wouldn't love rock like I do without him! thanks Gabe!
Dude!!! This is great!!!
Blue oyster cult is LIT!!!👍🏼👏🏼👏🏼👏🏼
cake has one of the most distinctive sounds ever. and they take themselves less seriously compared to the music. I dont think I would recognize them on the streets, or know their names.
excellent bass line, wonderful trumpet solo, not forgetting mccrea phrasing...i love this song !
Guitar counterpoints perfectly, adding to the effect.
The basssline is filthier than a 5 year playing in the mud
The great bass guitar is what I have always liked best about this band. The contrast with the other instruments is great as well but the bass lines are what makes it so good.
@@woogie88888 I always felt like they made beautiful use of the space. Everything complimented everything else. Fine line between busy and accented, and they always nailed it.
There's something about merry cake music it is great up beat and unique with style
Those that disliked this tune were never here.
I love your name lol
lol
I am here and this song sucks beyond belief
@@thaddeust.thirdiii736 i fucking love this song.. and that made me laugh my ass off🤣🤣🤣🤣
lol. I sincerely don't understand dislikes on songs on these.
Cake albums are really "must have" in your shelf. They're lyrics are jewelry, well interpreted orally AND musically. As they're universal in content...they don't wear.
My dad introduced me to this band, and I’m glad he did. My dad always would listen to this music, it was his favorite band. My dad sadly passed away, but I’m so glad he introduced me to this band, it is my favorite band, and will always be.
Great taste I'm sorry so for your loss :(
@@Espressoqueen9894 thank you
Rip
My dad was my introduction to CAKE also. He's still alive, fortunately. I'm sorry for your loss, friend.
Same. My dad introduced me to this band as well as gorillaz. He died and years later i would hear these songs and be hit with so many memories.
that Edward Norton sure can sing!

Crazy how fast 20 years goes past. CAKE takes the CAKE. They were an awesome band.

Curitiba, 1999. Eu tinha 8 anos.
@@luciano53688 red hot minha banda favorita sempreeeee
I’ve always had a very special place for this song. The bass is filthy and of course the trumpet too
Happy 2024 to everyone!!! May it be full of successes and always accompanied by good music!!!

I feel like all KZhead videos should have the lyrics . nice job
Thank you for the lyrics!!
It was 2004 and I was combing through CD's (wow, I feel old) when I saw Pressure Chief. I had heard a few songs by CAKE ( Never There among them) but did not know who the artist was. To this day, I have no idea what made me buy the CD but I did. I listened to it from start to end. Not only did I love every single song, when I heard the rooster of instruments utilized and just the sound itself, I had never heard anything like it. Still haven't. Their underrated genius's with something sorely lacking than now and always in the music industry and that is talent. Thank you CAKE for the music. It is truly one of a kind ❤
Shit, how did I forget this gem?
A golden bird that flies away, a candles fickle flame
Maybe you wasn’t there 😅
@@mv3967 Or.... Maybe I was?
The bass line, the voice, the music is just unique.... Just simply awesome...
Love the bass.
Well, if you can have a perfect Mexican trumpeter, then what else can't you do?
Much as I dislike my soon to be ex-wife, I'm grateful to her for turning me on to this awesome band! The two times I saw them live in Seattle and LA were the best live shows I've been to! I don't remember much of the LA show specifically, but I know I had a great time. This band attracts a great audience!
This is one of the greatest songs Cake has ever written.
Facts
This dropped not long after The Distance...it was eagerly played and replayed . It was B side to The Distance and I wore out the cassette. Those were the days.
I wonder how many people know what a b side is anymore
We need more music like this!!!!!
4 - SURE
Agreed
Yes we do! Music today doesn’t stand up.
This band is like fine wine aging over time.. they are so fucking good at the start, so why after all these years does the old music sound even better to me than the last time... Always and I've been listening for a long time! I try to turn as many people on to Cake as I can. As for live shows, they are definitely the one that got away. 😔
Part of the brilliance of this diamond is how it doesn't overstay its welcome, and so leaves you wanting more.
2019 & I still love Cake's music...
Me too 😀
2020 and still great
2021

Great in 2022
I never thought this song would become the theme song for my feelings on the American Church.
they dont make them like this anymore
Haha, I'm fairly sure very few people made them like this then too. :)
Okay boomer
Definitely ahead of their time.
The singer's voice sounds very cool in this song! It's a classic!
I found myself singing this song out of nowhere...had to look it up and enjoy.
The horns, the lyrics
Oh yeah and the bass
the trumpet solo completes me
Same here, but a flute added with the trumpet would've been nicer.
I feel Proud to say i was there when MTV used to play (Good) Music and watch this awesome music video.
Both

You were still at least a decade late... unfortunately.
Ditto, just here for the cool videos. HEY!.
@@lohhahaha lmao
Coolest band, criminally underrated
For some reason that thing he does with his hand when he says "a candles fickle flame" gets me riled up!
Very much same!
2022 the song slaps harder than ever
Most thing I've heard in my relationships "I'm to busy".....if you love someone you make time for them...they are priority!!!! If you want, you need to give....one sided relationships SUCK, sooner or later you get what you give!!!!
And sometimes that's nothing
Hands down one of the sickest 90s bands. Lyrics always on point and innovative coupled with sounds that are influenced from every corner of American society
Now What I Call Music Vol 2
Cake and the trumpet sounds are always epic
大好きだった!!
Seeing payphones ...feels really like an alien world from long ago that existed. Many places need payphones or other methods where cells phones will never work.
Heard the trumpet solo coming from the car next to mine at a stoplight. Knew exactly which song it was.
I giggle at the deadpan choruses in all their songs 😅
Once I discovered Cake I have obsessed! Love the sound and funkiness. ❤
dat bass line is poppin
I'm not from an English-speaking country, but I can understand everything this guy sings, his accent is perfect.
this slaps so hard
2024. If you ain’t listening you were never there. Byeeee
Don't go to gilgal
The first band I ever liked. Cake will always have a special place in my heart.
It's the little details that reveal it's true brilliance...the little phone sounds and other sound effects, the trumpet, the rodeo-like hooohs and yeaaahs, the whole country & western vibe, the dry tongue in cheek humor with a healthy dose of self mock..priceless!
They need a greatest hits cd
95 to 99 were so fantastic!!! This song was relased in 1998 , a good beautiful year for me!!! Dharma and Greg and Sex and The City were beginning to air on television!!! I just remember my city, Lima with its gray sky, my home, my family and my friends. I really miss my country!!!
Take the time to get to know me, If you want me why can’t you just show me, We’re always on this rollercoaster, If you want me why can’t you get closer
Strong resistance to stop listening ,it reminds me of many good things.
The best days......HIGH FIVE 🖐
Found the videos!!! Cannot get enough CAKE!
Just so brilliant. These guys don't get the kudos they deserve. If this song was released in the time of The Beatles, it would have been HUGE!
Una de las mejores canciones de los 90s. Me encantan tus canciones CAKE. Bendiciones y saludos desde Lima, Perú.
As a 14 year old who randomly found this song, it a gahtdamn bop :)

Such an underrated band
Still blows my mind how ahead of there time cake was
Somehow I think this song feels contemporary, the humour still translates well.
Cake seriously needs to be more appreciated
i love so much this song
Unique voices in music!!!
Truly an underrated band. The trumpet is possibly my favorite piece of music ever
We walk by faith, not by sight.
This song is still a jam. My parents blasted this song when I was a kid.
Meu pai me apresentou, tocou ontem no rádio quando estava ao lado dele. Amo essa música por anos
Wooo back blast
I love this band, but did anyone ever notice that BADASS dance move in the first few seconds?! God damn!
By the trail left on the ground looks like it was only the second take 😂. Definitely some bad ass moves!
Cake's first album, Motorcade of Generosity, is freaking incredible, too. It doesn't get a lot of attention, but it's so damn good.
Clássico!
I was in this relationship once.
Long live 90s rock
Cake sounds like Lou Reed fronting a Frank Zappa-inspired jam band.
It’s 2019 and I can’t find a pay phone like this one in the vid!!!
I love Cake♡
I cannot possibly imagine someone NOT loving this song. It's beyond brilliant. ♥️🙌❤
One of the best concerts I've been to.
There is really no comment by any one of us that can do Cake Justice. Their Originality , John McCrea’s ability to talk with that almost monotone voice but also with the Rhythm , Their phenomenal Bass lines , Their use of Horns without being a Ska band or even closely related to Ska , The simple yet Complex nature of their lyrics , The amazing guitar work that is subtly woven in between the prominent bass and extremely prominent horn work and their use of group chants and words loudly yelled together like “ Hey or Yeah “ !!!! They are in a genre of music called simply “CAKE” !!! There is no other band out there like them and I agree with the other people I’ve seen that made the comment that “ Cake is one of the most underrated bands that has ever existed “. I also seen a comment in which someone said that they feel like they would have done better in today’s musical atmosphere then they would have when they came out. I would have to disagree with that statement. There’s no doubt that today’s music industry sucks immensely. There’s several reasons for that. One is because “ Bands “ these days aren’t always what they seem. I used the quotations around band because it’s growing more and more popular as the years roll on where the definition of “ Band “ as it once existed has altered its meaning. One person is capable of Writing , playing , singing , recording , producing and then advertising and releasing content on their own , without a manager or a record contract with a record company which usually handles the business end of the music. Once signed to a label , Traditionally it was the bands job to write , play and then eventually perform that music. Then it was the Record company’s job to record, advertise/promote , transport the product ( band , staff and gear ) and book gigs. The internet as tons of software is now downloaded sometime for free that allow one person to do all of the Studio work and then they just have to do the grunt work Travel and transport themselves. In some cases , the only equipment required is a Laptop , WiFi signal and MAYBE ( If the person really plays in instrument) a guitar or some other instrument. The other reason I think Cake was in the time period they needed to be in to succeed is because the 90’s and early 2000’s seen a large influx of weird bands and experimental projects. Now a days musical acts don’t generally work to write a whole record because the internet has changed the way we get our music. People don’t listen to an artists or bands whole record anymore ... They download the few songs they like and move on. This has caused musicians to stop taking the time to work on an album and instead work extremely hard to write only songs that will land them on the charts. Tall task when you don’t know what’s gonna get you there every time or not. Bands in the traditional sense would write 10-15 songs ... Some good , some not so good and some that could be a hidden gem and NOONE knows it yet. That don’t happen anymore. Musicians today release songs on many different platforms as singles and then wait to see how they are received. If they have a song that lands them in the top 40 on the Billboards then they usually have Record labels trying to sign them to a contract. If it doesn’t go anywhere , then the song just floats around and it on to the next song. The internet and websites like Fiver and other sites where you can hire a specific instrumentalist to add their work to your song has created hundreds of thousands of independent artists who work for themselves. Lastly , I feel like society has lost its interest in bands like Cake. Not like Cake in the sense of their music but in the sense of their uniqueness. People are for whatever reason stuck in this perpetual funk that has them listening to horrible music and accepting that it’s all there is so that’s what they’ll listen to. This is a direct result of “ The Man “ ( Those that control the music industry and what makes it on the charts via controlling what bands get signed and get their music released to the world ) losing almost all of their power to deicide who gets heard. Now that people can do it by themselves and for very cheap in comparison to what the big labels spend to produce music ... We will NEVER have tons and tons of amazing music flooding the airwaves any more ... Just the occasional Chart topper here and there. Bands like Cake will have to do it themselves if they want to get heard because they didn’t have a strong appeal for a while when they first came out. For that reason , they probably would have been passed on and if they were to be starting out today, releasing a song here and there to See what people thought and if’s the masses didn’t like what they were putting out on various platforms and Cake didn’t get the reaction they hoped for on a particular song ... They may change their approach to how they write songs and they may change their sound to sound more like this band or that band and Cake as we know them to be may never be heard at all if they were doing their music now.
Cake has always rocked. And always will.
A little older a little wiser, if you ever had those issues
i love how they legit used a phone as an instrument 0:00 0:40 and others
Joshua Wilcken me too. Like Mike. If I keep playing this maybe I too, will learn.
"after the second phone beeping I want it to lead into a barebone synth beep-booping... yeah, yeah, like that"
Back when pop bands played instruments, and didn't have the dame producer as everyone else.
Being me, played this song to my leadership employers today on a mandatory conference call. While exiting my proposition.
This will always be fire 🔥 ...
Holy shit, haven't heard this song since the 90's. Had a flashback for a sec.glad a came across it.
