The bass really is the centre of the song, and it's stunning. Agree about the electric guitar, too. The acoustic guitar frankly sounds rather crappy, and the part is boring. As to the vocals... they're the one thing I'd out and out replace, but hey! Different strokes and all.

This is my cover of this song. Been in love with the band since I first listened to them. The way he sings in this sounds like a man holding back tears at parts and it's amazing. Then I also like how the guy from the distance music video runs by in a scene.
First time seeing the video, and I'm impressed by the brilliant sad humor of a meter reader pouring out his heart alone while doing day-into-night drudgery, giving out tickets to those who are actually living. This kind of video shows off his quirky and very smart storytelling that pervades the lyrics in his albums... and so many people who don't take the time to really seek meaning in Cake's lyrics dismiss them, but they're actually quite masterful. (And yes, I know this is a cover and not John's lyrics - I'm talking about John's storytelling through this video and through his non-cover lyrics.)
