Lyrics:
He's going the distance
He's going for speed
She's all alone (All alone)
All alone in her time of need
Because he's racing and pacing and plotting the course
He's fighting and biting and riding on his horse
He's going the distance

After singing this song for like 30 years in my car, I never realized for example, that the backing vocals "he's going for speed" are sung at a different time and pace than the lead vocal, you end up with this sort of delayed call/response. Really really cool. And what about the subtle guitar bends?? Never realized they even existed.

  • Profound. "The Distance" is a song by American alternative rock band Cake. Released in August 1996, "The Distance" was the first single from the band's second album, Fashion Nugget, and is considered one of their most popular songs.[4] It was written by the band's guitarist at the time, Greg Brown. "It is a song about success and failure, and failure of success, really," said McCrea in 2019. "It's a sad song, because there is no success. You can explode into the world with great magnificence, and still feel like the guy underneath the Mickey Mouse head, with the fan batteries that have stopped working properly, and it's dark under there, and everybody wants your autograph."[5] IMHO it's dark because you still haven't found your purpose and still on the hamster wheel running as fast as you possibly can but getting no where.

      @TheJohnreeves@TheJohnreeves Жыл бұрын
    • I don't think that's what the song is about. I believe "going the distance" here is not a good thing. What it looks and sounds like, to me, is that "going the distance" is working so hard at a job that won't ever reward your efforts and neglecting your own physical/mental health and relationships in the process. "She's all alone, all alone in her time of need" - he isn't there for her, because he's going the distance. "Long ago somebody left with the cup" and "No trophy, no flowers, no flashbulbs, no wine" - again, he goes unrewarded for his intense efforts yet continues to go the distance. "She's hoping in time that her memories will fade" - they are no longer together, either because he wasn't there, or just isn't alive, so she's hoping to forget him. Then we see at the end of the video he's going into the ocean, I interpret that as his death. He's worked himself into his grave. But, that's just one guy's opinion

  • Not gonna lie, this is probably as far as you can get from what I was imagining the video to be like, but hey, I still dig it.

  • You gotta love the 90s. So much of awesome, absurd randomness. The red bear. The tie. The guy on his desk.

  • This song is about not giving up, even when the race finishes hes still goin hard, metaphorically it is about a girl and not quitting and letting her go, the memories she wants to fade wont fade because he never quits, he never gives up even after the race/relationship is over and someone left with the cup/her, he still goes hard and wont give up on it/her. This song summed up is about going after what u want and never giving up win or lose

  • Back around when this video was uploaded back in 2011 my dad called me downstairs, 9 years old at the time, to watch it with him. Was in a trance by the video and probably watched it a total of 20-30 times. Today this song popped back into my mind after not hearing it for roughly 3 years. Definitely the highlight of my day.
