Incredible Orca encounter in slow motion 60fps

Thought I would share an edit of my Orca Video with swimmer Judie Johnson in slow motion. I used the mavic pro 2 and shot at 60fps. I kinda wish I shot this footage at 4k but it all happened so quickly.

  • The beauty of all this is that it all came naturally💕 the swimmer didn’t panic & I am sure she looks back on this as a highlight of her life! The whales didn’t feel threatened & it was a learning experience for the babies! Nature is an amazing thing 💦💕

  • She is so lucky, I would love to swim with orcas. Its like the mother orca was trying to help the lady get back to shore then realized she was ok. They are highly complex and intelligent beings and the last place they belong is in entertainment tanks like SeaWorld.

    • See the 7:32 version. I like your sentiments, but on one point I disagree with your interpretation. Of course I'm not inside the orcas' heads, I'm just interpreting their movements probably imperfectly. Initially the 3 killer whales are hunting rays and indeed food-sharing. This unusual animal, a human, interrupts them. The young ones are curious, but the mother acts protectively, and wants to be sure her children are not in danger. That is why she checks out the human so closely. She is also probably using the opportunity to teach the young ones what that animal is like. Thus I view the maneuvers less romantically. To sum up, it's defensive surveillance, which is of life-and-death importance to any wild animal. They can't smell, but it's almost like an animal sniffing you, trying to understand you.

    • @@robertspaggiari7033 We see orcas all the time here in Seattle (Puget Sound). It is not romantic to state that they frequently approach humans in a friendly manner with their young. Whether we are on paddleboards or kayaks or scuba they do not seem to fear us even with their young. As a matter of fact they go out of their way to come near. The Native American tribes here consider them a totem, spirit animal, and protector of humanity. Orcas are in carvings all over including totem poles and artwork that predates any European settlers. As the largest species of dolphin, orcas have the same curiosity and friendliness toward human beings over the years (when not put in small tanks, that is).

    • @@salan3507 Thank you for your excellent reply, which I largely accept, but with some reservations. I am enjoying this discussion. It is hard to convey balance and subtlety in brief KZhead comments. In the long run I will delete my comment, then perhaps try to post something more nuanced. I support Carl Safina's line that humans are narcisistically obsessed with how much animals love them, when the real issue is how much we can allow them to go about their everyday lives and continue to exist. This does not mean I support an extreme 20th century conservationist view that species will be safe if we just lock them up in national parks and marine protected areas and keep humans away from them. That approach underpins current efforts in Washington state to ban whale watching of salmon-eating Southern Resident Killer Whales. That would effectively reduce embarrassing publicity about conservation failures in Washington state, where wild salmon continues to decline with no state action. As regards the feelings towards humans of wild killer whales, there appears to have been appreciation for the support from scientists such as Ken Balcomb, Alexandra Morton, and Ingrid Visser, who detail interactions that go far beyond what is visible in this video. I believe the current gold standard for swimming with dolphins is Dr. Denise Herzing's Wild Dolphin Project. It can be mutually worthwhile when the dolphins are habituated, and the humans have learnt dolphin etiquette and social rules. Non-professionals are not usually up to speed on these things. This video shows a missed opportunity. The right - and more exciting - thing to do was to stop and watch the killer whales hunt and prey-share, which even scientists do not always get to see. I am trying to see a balance between various needs. I do want humans to have more contact with Nature, which is sorely needed. I am pleased that you are having good experiences with killer whales. But even in Seattle, where killer whales have a large following, most people do not really know much about them. For the safety of the orcas, I am concerned about these people behaving recklessly on the water, not more knowledgeable people like yourself. At the same time, I have been sharing people's joy as the Southern Residents once again this fall make forays into Puget Sound. It is very encouraging to see that efforts to improve local salmon conditions are worthwhile for the whales. ICYMI, for your orca-viewing pleasure, I am including PNW links to 2 recent brilliant lesser-known videos featuring Bigg's Killer Whales. Enjoy! kzhead.info/sun/eNCAqpqOfmN7mnA/bejne.html (Orca Behavior Institute channel. Note the incredible cartwheels at the end.) kzhead.info/sun/mrRpcdJvm6ejfJ8/bejne.html (Gary Sutton).

    • I thought maybe she was concerned about her as well and trying to direct her to the shore. However it seems like they’re just curious and interacting with her. Which is totally rare but it is always on their terms. However Ingrid the scientist lady swims with this particular pod quite often, so maybe they thought it was her. Although I’m pretty sure they can smell the difference because their hearing and smelling is top notch.

      @jennifermarshall4780@jennifermarshall47803 жыл бұрын
    • @@salan3507 the Nordic pod isn’t as easy to swim with. That’s the pod Tilicum was taken from. I bet u they still remember it. He died at age 35 in captivity. He could have lived another 25 years if he had stayed in the wild. When they did this the orcas had been chased before. They tried to separate. The males went north the moms and calf’s went south. They had aerial surveillance! Trapped them in a cove, and they’re so social they have a part of the brain that we don’t, that’s amazing! It has to do with empathy and love, socialization.They love and care about each other deeply on a level we don’t. Hard to describe. However once they had Tilly and they let down the nets, the orcas could’ve left. They didn’t!! They all stayed there and vocalized to him. They proved what those assholes did was wrong, kidnapping a 2 year old from its family. I remember watching it on something before blackfish came out. I was disgusted! I know that two of the whales died in the process and they cut them open and put rocks in them and sunk them. Sad! So interesting at Seaworld shit hole! They say they live longer in captivity because of “superior veterinary care”. Duh! The truth is they live longer in captivity females up to a 100 years males 60 years. I don’t think they will ever forgot what those men did. More weary of humans. Many have tried swimming with that pod, but they don’t get very close. They never harm. I just watched a free diver doing it in cold water and he could go really far down on one breath, it was crazy. However they were hunting herring and they were not really interested in him. Sure if he swam with them when they were not hunting might be more interaction, but I also watched a documentary and that scientists still had a harder time getting close. This pod is much more trusting of humans. It’s obvious they are curious and want to interact. Pretty cool and she’s is lucky. Most dream of moments like that. I’d be scared, a little! Lol. Not because they harm, because they’re so big.

  • What an AMAZING piece of footage!!! You knocked this one out of the park for sure!!! Such incredible animals: majestic and inquisitive .....
